You walk into your middle school science classroom and glance around. Lab supplies teeter on shelves, student projects pile up in corners, and your digital files? A total mess. You tell yourself, ‘I’ll organize later,’ but later never comes.

Instead of waiting until summer, let’s tackle a little spring cleaning now—making the rest of the year smoother and setting you up for a stress-free break

These simple tips will help you organize supplies, declutter digital files, and create a clean, functional space for the rest of the school year.

Spring Cleaning Tip #1: Organize Your Physical Materials

As science teachers, we tend to hold onto things with the classic, “Well, maybe I’ll use this someday…” mindset. But if you can’t think of a specific use for an item, or if it’s been sitting untouched for years, it’s probably time to toss it!

A well-organized classroom starts with storage solutions that make it easy to find what you need when you need it.

Set up smarter storage systems

I like to organize my materials by topic and make sure every unit has a designated space. My Waves unit materials go in one cabinet, while my Cells unit materials are in another. Not only does this keep things tidy, but it also helps me plan my lessons more efficiently!

Try this task card storage hack!

When I tell you I have 4 of these, I’m not lying. I love storing my task cards in clear photo storage containers. Each small box can hold a set of task cards, which makes it easy to find exactly what you need when you need it.

Tidy up small objects

Science teachers attract tiny objects like a magnet—literally! Batteries, clips, and random experiment leftovers end up in drawers, never to be seen again.

I used to be guilty of the same thing! Then I found a teacher toolbox, and suddenly, finding what I needed was as easy as balancing a simple equation.

Want to give it a try? These labels will help you keep everything in its place.

Take Inventory

What supplies did you run out of this year? Did a hot plate break in October that you never got around to replacing? Are your lab aprons getting old and worn out?

It can be hard to think of these things at the end of the year on top of all the other responsibilities you have. Try making a list of what you’ll need for next year so you can request it from your department head or school administrator before the summer rush.

Simplify your whiteboard

If your board is covered in notes that students don’t even look at anymore, it’s time for a refresh!

Switching to digital agenda slides can help streamline your classroom routines, improve student focus, and make transitions smoother. They’re functional, visually appealing, and free up valuable whiteboard space for actual lessons. Plus, they support better classroom management by keeping students on track.

Recycle old papers

Get rid of outdated handouts, return graded assignments to students, and file away anything that’s still useful. Less paper clutter = a more organized workspace.

Spring Cleaning Tip #2: Organize and Update Your Digital Resources

Digital clutter can feel just as overwhelming as the physical clutter in your classroom and it can quickly become just as distracting. With so many lesson plans, student data, and teaching resources piling up in your digital space, it’s easy to get bogged down searching for what you need.

Taking time to clean up and organize your digital files is just as important as decluttering your physical space. It helps you stay efficient, focused, and ready to tackle whatever comes your way.

Here’s how to streamline your digital resources:

Clean up your files

Start by organizing your folders with clear, specific labels like “Lesson Plans,” “Cells Unit,” or “Lab Data.” Within these folders, add subfolders to break things down even further. A well-structured system will make it easier to find what you need when you need it.

Rename files for easy searching

If you’ve ever wasted time hunting for “Unit3Lesson5_V2_2024_Old.pdf,” you know the struggle. Rename your files with clear, consistent titles that make sense, so searching for “Rock Cycle with Starburst Lab” or “Lab Safety Activities” is quick and simple.

Purge Old, Unnecessary Files

Is there a resource you haven’t used in years? If it’s not serving you, it’s time to let it go. Don’t hold on to outdated materials you don’t plan to use again. A good rule of thumb: if it hasn’t been useful in the past two years, it’s probably not going to be any more useful moving forward.

Back up your resources

Accidents happen, and technology can fail us when we least expect it. Protect your hard work by backing up your files in multiple places—whether that’s Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, or even a USB drive. Having a second copy of everything helps make sure you’re covered in case of any tech mishaps!

Spring Cleaning Tip #3: Update Your Learning Management System

A well-organized Learning Management System (LMS) can make a huge difference in the flow of your classroom, for you, your students, and their parents, too. Think of it as your digital classroom hub, and just like your physical classroom, it deserves a little attention during your spring cleaning.

Refining your LMS setup will help streamline your processes, make communication clearer, and ultimately save you time and stress in the long run.

Make sure lesson plans are up to date. Having organized digital lesson plans will make future planning so much easier.
Group related topics together, remove outdated assignments, and create a guide for students and parents to reference if needed.
Keep your LMS clean by archiving past units or assignments that no longer need to be front and center.

Spring Cleaning Now = Less Stress Later!

Reasons Why You Should Use a Middle School Science Syllabus

Let’s go back in time for a minute. Imagine you are in 6th grade. It’s your first day of school and you are full of emotions: fear, excitement, happiness, nervousness. You’re just a mess, right? Now, imagine you are walking into your 5th period science class and the teacher is verbally going over her rules and procedures with you for her class. This is after you’ve spent the previous 5 periods of the day hearing the same thing from all your other teachers. Are you really going to remember which teacher said you only had 2 bathroom passes per quarter vs unlimited? What classes are you allowed to eat in? Which required a notebook? It’s a lot to remember. This is why you need a middle school science syllabus.

Many teachers are doing the same thing on the first day of school. You don’t want your rules and expectations to get lost. Yeah, you want your students to get that information because it’s important. But, you also want to make sure they remember it. This is why I provide a syllabus in middle school science. Here are a few reasons why you should provide students with a middle school science syllabus too.

1. Clarity

You want your students to have clarity on what your class is all about, the expectations, what they will learn, the rules, the necessary supplies and objectives. It’s important to talk about it all but it’s also important to have it on paper (or digital if you choose)! If it’s all laid out for them, it removes a lot of confusion.

2. Organization

You can tell them what they need to be prepared for class each day and how to enter the classroom everyday during that first week, but sometimes they are going to forget. If they need to reference something, your syllabus will answer all those questions. It also helps your students understand how the course is organized and what they can expect to learn and when.

3. Accountability

Providing a syllabus for students will hold them more accountable. Your expectations are all laid out for them right there. It states what they need to do, what they can’t do, how they are graded and more. It removes the “you never told us that” or any other unknown because it’s all documented and easily accessible for them.

4. Parent Involvement

It’s hard to keep in touch with parents at the middle school level. You have so many students! By providing a syllabus for students to take home or access online, you are making it easy for parents to understand what to expect from you and the class. This makes you part of a team and removes a lot of confusion. Your syllabus is a communication tool for you, parents and students. Think of this as one of your very first introductions. Make it count!

Incorporating a syllabus into your class is more than just a formality. It’s a functional tool that enhances the learning experience for both students and parents. By setting clear expectations, objectives and fostering accountability in a document, you are paving the way for an excellent school year from the start. Your syllabus is a blueprint for success. Middle School Science Classroom Layout Ideas and Tips

When you’re thinking about how to set up your middle school science classroom, you’ve got a lot to consider. It isn’t all about seating charts and throwing up a bunch of science themed posters on the wall. There’s a lot more to consider. You want to create an environment that is ideal for learning so that your students can remain productive and engaged. You’ll be surprised how quickly a lesson can fall apart when your class doesn’t know where to sharpen their pencil, find supplies or where to get their notebook. Whether you’re a first year teacher or you just want to improve from last school year, I hope you’ll get some inspiration from these science classroom layout ideas and tips.

What to Do First?

The first thing you want to do is think about all the areas you’ll need or want to have in your room. Think of these spaces as ways that will keep you organized, keep your students organized, provide accessibility and make your life easier. Ask yourself questions like:

Where will students sharpen their pencils?

Where will you have students turn in their work?

Where will you keep your student supplies?

Where will students find textbooks?

Where will students put their notebooks/binders?

Where will you have your students keep their chairs when they need to be stacked at the end of the day?

Where can students access work if they are absent?

Will you have a designated lab area?

Where will you store lab materials?

Where can you place a smartboard or projector?

Where can safety equipment be found?

Where will important information for students be displayed?

Student Seating Arrangements

If you’ve got those big, heavy lab tables, you know they are the absolute worst to move around. It’s important to think of how you want your layout to be for your students. If you want an environment that fosters collaboration, you may want to have your students sit in groups. Maybe you just want students to have a designated lab partner. You may also be sold on the idea of traditional rows. Think of the pros and cons of each before making a decision.

Just because you choose one way to set your seating in the beginning of the year, doesn’t mean it has to stay that way. You can begin with rows while still ensuring that you have an easy way to put desks or tables together for lab days.

Another big thing to consider is accessibility. You want to make sure all the students in your class can see you, the board or anything else they’ll need to pay attention to without twisting their entire body to do so! It may sound silly, but I like to sit in random spots around the room to make sure that the arrangement is comfortable and accessible for them all, no matter where they sit.

This is also a great time to consider the needs of students you have that may have disabilities. You want to make sure they can see, navigate around the room and that paths are clear.

Student Access to Technology

If your school is anything like mine, then you won’t get a lot of your technology such as smartboards, projectors, printers and laptops until a few days before students come in. If you’re setting up your classroom early, make sure you are envisioning your space with these added factors in mind. Also, make sure they are accessible for your students since some of this tech will get a lot of use.

If your students don’t receive their own computers to use and you rely on a laptop cart like I do, consider numbering the chargers and laptops to make it easier for students to access them and plug them back in with ease. I assign my students laptop numbers to make this process easy.

Don’t underestimate the size of those smartboards if you get one. They are usually bigger than you think and you’ll need a decent amount of space for one, especially if it doesn’t have wheels!

Resource Centers for Students

Many science classes and teachers provide a lot of differentiated activities and labs which require a variety of supplies. Setting up a general student resource center that students can have access to on those lab/project days can make your life, and your students lives, much easier! I like to set up my resource center with the following:

Stapler

Hole punch

Pencils

Colored Pencils

Markers

Glue

Scissors

Loose Leaf paper

These types of supplies remain there all year but I will switch things out depending on the activity I am doing. The point of this space is to be a one stop shop for all resources students are welcome to have access to if they need them.

As well as a resource center, you want to plan an area of the room where students will get their textbooks, science notebooks, folders and any other personal materials they may have.

There should also be a designated area for students to turn in their assignments. You may want one single catch all bin or tray. I like to have individually labeled trays for each of my class periods. This makes grading and organizing so much easier!

Extra Student Copies and Absent Work

This area of my classroom has saved me a tremendous amount of time. I call it the absent wall. I hang file folder holders on the wall and add any extra copies of assignments there. Students who miss a day or lose something can just go up to the wall, find what they need and grab it. I have more information about how I manage work for absent students here.

Supply Storage

I feel like science teachers are notorious for having a ton of supplies in their classroom. We do all the labs are projects, right?! It means we have a lot of stuff so storing all that stuff is important. You can read about my solutions for organizing all my science classroom supplies here. Some of my favorites include photo storage containers for task cards and rolling storage carts!

Pro tip: Label EVERYTHING. It may seem tedious but I promise you’ll thank yourself later!

Bonus Tips

1. I love having an area of my classroom to display student work. Even the big kids like to be shown off a little!

2. Try not to clutter your classroom too much with decor. You want your students to focus on the content, not everything you’ve got going on.

3. Don’t feel limited to just science-themed posters. You can make the room your own while mixing in those posters!

Middle School Science Classroom Procedures You Should Try Next Year

Having effective middle school science classroom procedures can make or break the overall dynamic of the classroom. Yes, the content is important but you won’t get too far without establishing procedures first. There are so many things to consider in your middle school classroom and how you want things to run so if you’re new to teaching or just want to be more effective next year, then here are some things you may want to consider.

Starting Every Class with a Warm Up or Bellringer

If your middle school students are like most, then you probably notice that most behaviors occur during transition times. This can include when students are first coming into your classroom and are waiting for something to do. Yes, you need to get settled in yourself and take attendance, so why not give yourself a chance to settle in and give your students a chance to do so too? Warm ups are the perfect solution for this.

Your students have an expectation from the moment they walk in the door that they know is a requirement and
Your warm up or bellringer question is the perfect opportunity to review content from last class period’s lesson.

I call that a win-win. While you’re taking attendance, your students are working on the day’s warm up. Once you are done taking attendance, you can quickly take a walk around the room to check students’ responses and then review the answer with the class.

Personally, I like to give my students a warm up template that either has the questions already on there or has a space where students can write the question and answer. This is something they can grab when they walk in and get started on immediately.

Here are five ways to use science warm ups in your classroom.

Using Daily Agenda Slides

The perfect blend of digital classroom decor and organization. Agenda slides provide a visual of what students can expect during the class period. If you make it a focal point in your classroom by using a projector or smartboard, it will be the first thing that students will see when they walk in.

Let’s face it, you have to write that objective or standard on the board, but how many students are actually going to look at it? By using an agenda slide, you have something students will actually want to look at that gives them information that they need.

Here are some things you can include on your agenda slides:

Objective
Standards
Agenda
Warm up or bellringer questions
Homework
Reminders
Supplies to have ready
Field trip reminders
Important dates to remember

Having a Procedure for EVERYTHING

Yes, that may sound dramatic but you’d be surprised what happens when you don’t. Every teacher and every classroom is different but here are some things to consider.

What do students do if they need to go to the restroom? Do you have a pass system with a sign out sheet? Do they raise their hands and ask? Do they need to wait until after you are done giving instructions or a lesson before asking? Unless it’s an emergency, of course.
What if a student needs a pencil? Can they just grab one? Do they write their name on the board to sign one out? What if they need to sharpen that pencil in the middle of a lesson or activity?
Where do students turn in their work when they are done? The last thing you want is a student handing you work every few minutes throughout the period. Have a spot for that and tell them where it is. If it’s a digital assignment, show they exactly where and how they do that as well.
How will they enter and leave the classroom? Are you going with “the bell doesn’t dismiss you, I dismiss you” strategy or can they just leave when the bell rings? What should they do when they first walk in the room?
This one may seem obvious, but you still want to establish how students participate in classroom discussions. Even the big kids forget to raise their hand sometimes!
Lab safety. Don’t skip this unit! Even for the upper grades who you think should already know it by now. Remind them. Trust me on this one.
Have procedures for handling absences and make-up work. How will students get what they missed? Make sure this procedure is easy for you and them. You can read more about how I manage absent work in my classroom here.
Review emergency procedures and review them often. Where do students go when there is a fire drill? Or a lockdown? You don’t want to be scrambling during thes!
Set rules for using technology in the classroom and how they will return laptops and other materials when they are done. I recommend using a visual numbering system for laptops so students know exactly where to go and remember to plug their devices in to charge.
Establish guidelines for working in groups/pairs.
End of class routine. Will you use exit tickets? Will students have time to put things away in an organized manner? Will your last period help clean up and stack chairs?

Do what works best for you and your classroom. Most importantly, always review your procedures with your class to make sure everyone is on the same page.

10 Ways to Plan a New Year Classroom Reset in Science

Coming back to school after a long break can be exhausting. Students have forgotten all about the classroom rules, and everyone is dragging. Despite the challenges, it’s the perfect time for a classroom reset. You can also use this opportunity to establish new methods for classroom management or implement new behavior management strategies. Whether you just want a refresh or want to try something new, here are a few areas I recommend focusing on during your classroom reset.

#1 Introduce Agenda Slides – the ultimate new year classroom reset

Agenda slides are a great method for classroom management. They help students prepare for the day and know exactly what to expect. Your agenda slides can contain information like the objective, warm up question, daily schedule, or supplies to have ready.

#2 Review Supply Procedures

A big part of your classroom reset is reviewing procedures for getting supplies. Go over where students can find supplies, when they should get them, etc. This is one of the behavior management strategies that will make a big difference in engagement (because the sound of a pencil sharpener going off mid-lesson is always distracting).

#3 Utilize Warm-Ups

January is a good time to rethink your warm ups. Maybe change how students find their warm ups or where they turn them in. You might even reconsider the type of warm up you use, like switching from a problem of the day to a review question.

#4 Refresh Lab Safety

This is a big one! Go over your lab rules, like no food on lab days, wearing closed-toe shoes, and how to clean broken glass or another mess properly. These lab safety activities will keep your refresh engaging and can be used year after year.

#5 Review Clean-Up Procedures

If you want to avoid that end of the day mess (you know, the one where you pick up 27 pencils off the floor), then you definitely want to review this method of classroom management. Go over your end-of-class procedures, like cleaning the floor, storing journals, and tidying their desk.

#6 Managing Interactive Notebooks

You and I both know that interactive notebooks can easily become a mess. Having conversations before it gets to that point, though, is the best behavior management strategy. Remind students where to glue pages, how much glue to use, how notebooks are graded, where they are kept, and how often students need to bring them to class. Use this interactive notebook set-up kit to help keep those notebooks organized!

#7 Maintain a Safe Space

A safe space means both physically and emotionally safe. Go over campus-wide rules and procedures, like not running in the hallways and lockdown drills. Also, remind students that your classroom will remain a safe space for ideas and thoughts to be shared. Coming back from a long holiday break can often feel like the first week of school, but you know your students at this point – so you have an edge. The best method for classroom management is to stay consistent (even when you’re #teachertired) and focus on student relationships.

14 Ways to Use Technology in the Science Classroom

Using technology in the classroom can be nerve-racking. What if things go wrong? What if the devices somehow didn’t charge overnight? What if the internet isn’t working? It’s easy to let these concerns keep you from using technology, but in my opinion, the pros outweigh the potential cons. With so many online games and platforms, technology can enhance your lessons and help students apply their knowledge in new ways.

Ways to Use Technology in the Classroom

#1 PhET Simulations:

PhET simulations are one of my favorite ways for students to explore different science concepts. It’s mess-free and online, so all they need to do is load the platform – and begin “playing” around. I usually give a brief introduction to each PhET simulation, but then I give students time to experiment. Try it out with this energy PhET simulation.

#2 Kahoot!:

Just the sound of the theme music gets my students excited! Kahoot! has tons of pre-made online games, so you can easily grab a review for your next unit.

#3 Blooket:

Blooket is definitely in the realm of online games for the classroom. They can play games like “Gold Rush” where they have to answer questions in order to get points and advance. I love that students are actually engaged in the review!

#4 Quizizz:

Quizizz has online games for class, and you can also assign the quizzes for homework. Students “race” to answer the questions correctly. There are several pre-made quizzes, so check there before you make one from scratch.

#5 Online Research:

This is a super practical use of technology in the classroom. Students will use the internet for research for the rest of their lives, so why not teach them the skills to find accurate, quality information?

#6 Project-Based Learning:

With PBL, students can create digital projects (like slideshows or posters), research their topics, and use tools like Google Docs and Slides to plan.

#7 Virtual Meetings:

Invite a scientist or other professional to Zoom with your class and share their real-life work! Your students will be so engaged in these virtual meetings they will remember them for a long time to come.

#8 Virtual Field Trips:

Taking in-person field trips can be difficult, but you’d be amazed at how many virtual field trips are available out there. The Georgia Aquarium has great live cams, for example. This is a great way to bring the real world into the classroom – without having to actually leave the classroom.

#9 Digital Concept Mapping:

Lots of platforms these days make it easy to create concept maps digitally. You can do this in Google Slides, Canva, and more. Concept mapping is great for making connections and building on previous knowledge.

#10 Nearpod:

Nearpod will 10x your PowerPoint lesson! Instead of simply flipping through slides, Nearpod allowed you to add virtual reality, checkpoint quizzes, games, and more.

#11 Flipgrid:

On this platform, students can create short videos. This is a good alternative to class presentations. You can also have students explain their work or create guided videos for other students.

#12 Canva for Education:

Say goodbye to the mess of creating projects. With Canva, students can create infographics, brochures, posters, and more. Canva is a user-friendly website, and students will have fun putting their projects together.

#13 Google Slides:

Slides aren’t just for the whole group. You can use them for stations, too! In fact, I’ve created an entire integrated science Google Slides bundle that includes digital activities for physical science, life science, and earth and space science.

#14 BrainPop Science:

Even the big kids love Tim and Moby. BrainPop has short videos that teach complex concepts in an easily consumable way. I like to use these videos to introduce or review topics.

I hope you feel inspired to use technology in the classroom. Don’t worry about trying everything at once. Just pick a few tools and slowly introduce them to students!

6 Steps to Setting Up Student Interactive Notebooks in Science

Student interactive notebooks have been a total game-changer in my classroom. I have used science interactive notebooks since my first year of teaching, and I swear I learn more and more each school year. Over time, I’ve found ways to make using notebooks better for both me and my students. One essential thing I’ve learned is that how you set up your notebooks can make or break the experience. I want to share how I set up science interactive notebooks with my students so they are successful all year long.

Setting Up Student Interactive Notebooks

#1 Pick Your Notebook Style

My students always made fun of me because I was “anti-spiral notebooks.” I have good reasons, though! Personally, I don’t think spiral notebooks last as long. The stringy paper bits make a mess, and students love to pull out the metal spiral (making the journals an occupational hazard).

If I had to pass off any advice, it would be to stick with composition notebooks. They last longer and are less bulky than the binder option.

However, at the end of the day though, choose what works best for you and your students. Remember to also give students enough time to buy their notebooks. Many don’t go school supply shopping until after the first few days of school.

#2 Make a Day of It

A key to making this whole process successful is to take the time to set up student interactive notebooks. If you try to cram the process into ten minutes or put it together as you dive into content, it won’t work as well. Take my word for it.

Instead, block out a whole class period to set things up correctly.

#3 Create Student Interactive Notebook Covers

I HIGHLY recommend buying shipping labels (affiliate link) to make covers for the science interactive notebooks. You can type and print students’ information onto the sticker or have them stick it onto their notebooks and use a Sharpie to label it.

Personally, I like to put a sticker on the front and the back. This makes it easier to grade and organize the notebooks.

#4 Add a Table of Contents

Another idea for interactive notebooks is to add a table of contents. This should go at the front, and I recommend leaving a few empty pages. You can create a table of contents template for students to glue in or model how to create one.

Either way, show students how to use a table of content. This helps keep the students organized and able to find their notes and activities later.

#5 Create Divers for the Notebook

Next, decide how students will divide their student interactive notebooks. You can divide it by unit (this is how I like to do it) or by activity, like vocabulary, notes, warm ups, and more. Then, create table or divider pages students can glue in.

You also want to make sure the entire class is dividing their notebook the same this. This makes it easy to model how students should set up their notebooks, plus will make it easy for you to find items you want to grade.

#6 Add an Assessment Tracker

Lastly, science interactive notebooks don’t have to be just for content material. You can also use them for other class-related items. I like to add assessment trackers to the back of my students’ notebooks. Then, throughout the year, students track their grades and have a quick, visual way to monitor their progress.

Use Daily Agenda Slides to Better Classroom Management

One of the toughest parts about each class period is the transition from the hallway to the classroom. The hallway is full of chaos, with students having lots of freedom and opportunity to get into trouble! So transitioning into the classroom can be hard for students. I found that the best way to ease students in is to have a structured activity ready the moment they walk into class, like agenda slides. Not only do these slides end up being a great classroom management idea, but they help students review material throughout the year.

How I Use Agenda Slides in My Classroom

As soon as my students walk into the room, they see an agenda slide projected onto the board or displayed on a screen. This slide has the agenda for the day, the objective, and the daily warm up.

Students know they need to immediately get started on that warm up. This routine will take a while to build, but students will get the hang of it. My students knew they had about five minutes to work before I came around to start checking their warm up.

The Advantages of Agenda Slides

Because this becomes a daily routine and expectation, students can start the class period independently. As a teacher, we all hope our students will take accountability for their learning, so agenda slides are just one more area where that is possible.

My students knew that if their warm ups weren’t complete by the time I walked around to check, I wouldn’t sign off on it to give them a grade for the day. This really got students to focus from the moment they came in through the door.

While students work, they also have a moment to catch their breath, calm down, and get focused before instruction begins. This is why agenda slides also double as a great classroom management idea. It serves as a structured buffer time for students and can eliminate some negative behavior during the lesson.

Another advantage to agenda slides is setting the expectations for the day. If you’ve ever had students ask, “What are we doing today” on repeat, then you know students are curious about what’s happening in the classroom. With the slides, this goes right on the screen next to their warm up, so they can mentally prepare for class.

I also found that using slides supported my diverse learners who needed to see things visually or needed consistent reminders. With agenda slides, all instructions were clearly written out, and I could also add pictures for students who needed them.

I’m Changing How I Use Interactive Notebooks in Science

Throughout the years, I’ve been refining how I use interactive notebooks for science. Each year I learn something new about how to make them even more engaging and useful for my students. I think interactive notebooks can be really impactful for students, but they can also quickly get messy and disorganized. Luckily, I’ve learned from those mistakes in the past!

Here’s how I will be using interactive notebooks going forward –

How to Use Interactive Notebooks for Science

#1 Use a Table of Contents

Here’s the truth: If you don’t use a table of contents, kids will blindly paste things anywhere they can just to get it in before you do a notebook check. This means they end up an a notebook that is far from useful. To solve this problem in the future, my students will be required to have a table of content in their science interactive notebooks.

#2 Add Opportunities for Reflection

A lot of times, we get busy moving from one unit to the next because there is a lot to cover. However, students need to stop and reflect.

I plan on adding some reflection pages into my student’s interactive notebooks for science. In this space, I can assess their knowledge and understanding of the current and previous unit. This will not only help them see their own growth but also help me see what areas need to be reviewed.

#3 Divide Up the Units

To make science interactive notebooks less chaotic, units need to be clearly divided. Kind of like a table of content, the more intertwined everything is – the harder it is to find material later. With well-organized science interactive notebooks, students can easily search for what they need without flipping through each page. That’ll make things easier for all of us!

#4 Teach Students How to Glue…Seriously!

You may laugh at me for this one, but my students really go crazy with glue. I often have to say “a dot is a lot” because students will smear glue everywhere. It makes a mess, leaves their notebook gooey, and takes forever to dry. Some students use so much glue that I can’t even open their notebooks. In the future, we will have quarterly lessons on this to remind them how to glue. I am not even kidding!

#5 Track Student Progress

Having students include progress tracking in their science interactive notebooks is a great way to keep them accountable for their learning. The data trackers help students see their strengths, weaknesses, and overall progress. There needs to be lots of conversation around these charts (like letting them know it’s not to shame them), but I think it’s really useful for students to see.

#6 Use Templates

To make things easier on myself in the future, I plan on using more templates for science interactive notebooks. Not every lab or demonstration needs its own special lab or write up. I created a general lab template, a general claim, evidence, reasoning (CER) template, and a predict, observe, explain (POE) template that helps with this! These templates work for labs, demos, videos and more. In fact, I made a bundle with all of my no-prep, simple Science Templates.

Simple Classroom Organization Ideas for Middle School Science

If you teach in a science classroom, you probably know how important organization is. From test tubes to microscopes, science teachers are responsible for lots of supplies. However, being able to easily locate said supplies or find the right place to store it? That’s a different challenge. I want to share a few ideas for classroom storage that will keep your science classroom in tip-top shape.

Ideas for classroom storage

Teacher ToolBox

Middle schoolers are constantly losing their supplies…and on the hunt for new ones. I’ve found that having a Teacher ToolBox is the best way to keep my personal items organized and out of sight from students. I use the toolbox for smaller items like Flair pens, mechanical pencils, Sharpies, Post-its, and more.

Rolling Storage Cart

One of my favorite classroom storage ideas is rolling storage carts. You can store everything from assignments, cardstock, colored paper, hall passes, and more. Plus, if you ever have to move classrooms or switch up your classroom layout, you can simply roll it where it needs to go!

Binders

While it may not be revolutionary, binders still stand as a useful tool for classroom organization. I like to store my hard copies of activities and assignments in binders, but you can also use it for student work, student data, important admin forms, and more.

Border Storage

Borders can be a real pain to organize (especially if you have a border obsession like me). Luckily, this border storage pouch makes it easy. This idea of classroom storage will allow you to see what borders you have quickly.

Stackable Containers

These stackable containers are my favorite way to organize items for specific units. This organization idea helps me keep my classroom in order and lab materials from landing all over the place. The containers are great for STEM kits, lab kits, or any other supplies you have.

Supply Caddies

These supply caddies are perfect for group work or shared table supplies. Inside the caddies, I keep day to day necessities like pencils, pens, and glue. You can also use them to store lab materials. Not only do they keep you organized, but they cut down on students getting up and wandering around looking for materials.

Photo Storage Containers

Photo storage containers are the task card storage solution of my dreams. I keep exit tickets in here, plus I sort all my task cards by unit with these. It makes it really easy to grab a set later. For example, when reviewing physical science I easily whipped out my physical science task cards for stations and handed out the physical science warm-up task cards as students walked in the room.
