It’s important to think of how you want your layout to be for your students. If you want an environment that fosters collaboration, you may want to have your students sit in groups. Maybe you just want students to have a designated lab partner. You may also be sold on the idea of traditional rows. Think of the pros and cons of each before making a decision.</span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial,sans-serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> </span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial,sans-serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Just because you choose one way to set your seating in the beginning of the year, doesn’t mean it has to stay that way. You can begin with rows while still ensuring that you have an easy way to put desks or tables together for lab days. </span></p><p><b style="font-weight: normal;"> </b></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial,sans-serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Another big thing to consider is accessibility. You want to make sure all the students in your class can see you, the board or anything else they’ll need to pay attention to without twisting their entire body to do so! It may sound silly, but I like to sit in random spots around the room to make sure that the arrangement is comfortable and accessible for them all, no matter where they sit. </span></p><p> </p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial,sans-serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">This is also a great time to consider the needs of students you have that may have disabilities. You want to make sure they can see, navigate around the room and that paths are clear.</span></p> </div>

									<span style="font-weight: 400;">Coming back to school after a long break can be </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">exhausting</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">. Students have forgotten all about the classroom rules, and everyone is dragging. Despite the challenges, it’s the perfect time for a classroom reset. You can also use this opportunity to establish new methods for classroom management or implement new behavior management strategies. Whether you just want a refresh or want to try something new, here are a few areas I recommend focusing on during your classroom reset.</span>

&nbsp;
<h2><b>#1 Introduce Agenda Slides &#8211; the ultimate new year classroom reset</b></h2>
<span style="font-weight: 400;">Agenda slides are a great method for classroom management. They help students prepare for the day and know exactly what to expect. Your agenda slides can contain information like the objective, warm up question, daily schedule, or supplies to have ready.</span>

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-3526 aligncenter" src="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/agenda-slides-classroom-reset-300x200.png" alt="science agenda slides new year classroom reset" width="542" height="361" srcset="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/agenda-slides-classroom-reset-300x200.png 300w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/agenda-slides-classroom-reset-1024x683.png 1024w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/agenda-slides-classroom-reset-768x512.png 768w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/agenda-slides-classroom-reset-600x400.png 600w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/agenda-slides-classroom-reset.png 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 542px) 100vw, 542px" />
<h2><b>#2 Review Supply Procedures</b></h2>
<span style="font-weight: 400;">A big part of your classroom reset is reviewing procedures for getting supplies. Go over where students can find supplies, when they should get them, etc. This is one of the behavior management strategies that will make a big difference in engagement (because the sound of a pencil sharpener going off mid-lesson is always distracting).</span>

&nbsp;
<h2><b>#3 Utilize Warm-Ups</b></h2>
<span style="font-weight: 400;">January is a good time to </span><a href="https://secondarysparks.com/science-warm-ups/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">rethink your warm ups</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. Maybe change how students find their warm ups or where they turn them in. You might even reconsider the </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">type </span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">of warm up you use, like switching from a problem of the day to a review question.</span>

<h2><b>#4 Refresh Lab Safety</b></h2>
<span style="font-weight: 400;">This is a big one! Go over your lab rules, like no food on lab days, wearing closed-toe shoes, and how to clean broken glass or another mess properly. These </span><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Lab-Safety-Activities-Warm-Ups-Task-Cards-and-Choice-Board-5662759?utm_source=classroom%20new%20year%20reset%20blog&amp;utm_campaign=lab%20safety%20freebie"><span style="font-weight: 400;">lab safety activities</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> will keep your refresh engaging and can be used year after year.</span>

&nbsp;
<h2><b>#5 Review Clean-Up Procedures</b></h2>
<span style="font-weight: 400;">If you want to avoid that end of the day mess (you know, the one where you pick up 27 pencils off the floor), then you </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">definitely </span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">want to review this method of classroom management. Go over your end-of-class procedures, like cleaning the floor, storing journals, and tidying their desk.</span>

&nbsp;
<h2><b>#6</b> <b>Managing Interactive Notebooks</b></h2>
<span style="font-weight: 400;">You and I </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">both</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> know that interactive notebooks can easily become a mess. Having conversations </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">before</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> it gets to that point, though, is the best behavior management strategy. Remind students where to glue pages, how much glue to use, how notebooks are graded, where they are kept, and how often students need to bring them to class. Use this </span><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Interactive-Notebook-Set-Up-Starter-Kit-for-All-Subjects-7144926?utm_source=classroom%20new%20year%20reset%20blog&amp;utm_campaign=INB%20set%20up%20kit"><span style="font-weight: 400;">interactive notebook set-up kit</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> to help keep those notebooks organized!</span>

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" wp-image-3528 aligncenter" src="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/science-inb-classroom-reset-300x200.png" alt="science interactive notebook" width="542" height="361" srcset="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/science-inb-classroom-reset-300x200.png 300w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/science-inb-classroom-reset-1024x683.png 1024w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/science-inb-classroom-reset-768x512.png 768w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/science-inb-classroom-reset-600x400.png 600w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/science-inb-classroom-reset.png 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 542px) 100vw, 542px" />
<h2><b>#7 Maintain a Safe Space</b></h2>
<span style="font-weight: 400;">A safe space means both physically </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">and</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> emotionally safe. Go over campus-wide rules and procedures, like not running in the hallways and lockdown drills. Also, remind students that your classroom will remain a safe space for ideas and thoughts to be shared.</span>

&nbsp;

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Coming back from a long holiday break can often feel like the first week of school, </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">but</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> you know your students at this point &#8211; so you have an edge. The best method for classroom management is to stay consistent (even when you’re #teachertired) and </span><a href="https://secondarysparks.com/4-tips-for-teachers-on-building-relationships-with-students/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">focus on student relationships</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span> </div>

									<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Using technology in the classroom can be nerve-racking. What if things go wrong? What if the devices somehow didn’t charge overnight? What if the internet isn’t working? It’s easy to let these concerns keep you from using technology, but in my opinion, the pros outweigh the potential cons. With so many online games and platforms, technology can enhance your lessons and help students apply their knowledge in new ways.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h1><b>Ways to Use Technology in the Classroom</b></h1>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3><b>#1 PhET Simulations:</b></h3>
<h3><b> </b><span style="font-family: 'Hind Siliguri'; font-size: 16px;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">PhET simulations are one of my favorite ways for students to explore different science concepts. It’s m</span>ess-free and online, so all they need to do is load the platform &#8211; and begin “playing” around. I usually give a brief introduction to each PhET simulation, but then I give students time to experiment. Try it out with this<span style="font-weight: 400;"> </span><a href="https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulations/energy-skate-park-basics?gad=1&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjwgZCoBhBnEiwAz35RwqKRgY5nxEuDLV-quVWyepK55l29YqckdHmtQo0s808WClb6cD3WdBoCosUQAvD_BwE"><span style="font-weight: 400;">energy PhET simulation</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></span></h3>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-3061 aligncenter" src="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/technology-in-science-classroom-2-300x200.png" alt="phet simulations for middle school science using technology" width="419" height="279" srcset="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/technology-in-science-classroom-2-300x200.png 300w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/technology-in-science-classroom-2-1024x683.png 1024w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/technology-in-science-classroom-2-768x512.png 768w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/technology-in-science-classroom-2-600x400.png 600w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/technology-in-science-classroom-2.png 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 419px) 100vw, 419px" /></p>
<h3><b>#2 Kahoot!: </b></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Just the sound of the theme music gets my students excited! Kahoot! has tons of pre-made online games, so you can easily grab a review for your next unit.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3><b>#3 Blooket:</b></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Blooket is definitely in the realm of online games for the classroom. They can play games like “Gold Rush” where they have to answer questions in order to get points and advance. I love that students are actually engaged in the review!</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3><b>#4 Quizizz:</b></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Quizizz has online games for class, </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">and</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> you can also assign the quizzes for homework. Students “race” to answer the questions correctly. There are several pre-made quizzes, so check there before you make one from scratch.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3><b>#5 Online Research:</b></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This is a super practical use of technology in the classroom. Students will use the internet for research for the rest of their lives, so why not teach them the skills to find accurate, quality information?</span></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-3060 aligncenter" src="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/technology-in-science-classroom-1-300x200.png" alt="middle school science students using technology" width="417" height="278" srcset="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/technology-in-science-classroom-1-300x200.png 300w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/technology-in-science-classroom-1-1024x683.png 1024w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/technology-in-science-classroom-1-768x512.png 768w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/technology-in-science-classroom-1-600x400.png 600w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/technology-in-science-classroom-1.png 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 417px) 100vw, 417px" /></p>
<h3><b>#6 Project-Based Learning: </b></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">With PBL, students can create digital projects (like slideshows or posters), research their topics, and use tools like Google Docs and Slides to plan.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3><b>#7 Virtual Meetings: </b></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Invite a scientist or other professional to Zoom with your class and share their real-life work! Your students will be so engaged in these virtual meetings they will remember them for a long time to come.&nbsp;</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3><b>#8 Virtual Field Trips: </b></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Taking in-person field trips can be difficult, but you’d be amazed at how many virtual field trips are available out there. The Georgia Aquarium has great </span><a href="https://www.georgiaaquarium.org/webcam/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">live cams</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, for example. This is a great way to bring the real world into the classroom &#8211; without having to actually </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">leave</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> the classroom.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3><b>#9 Digital Concept Mapping:</b></h3>
<p><b> </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">Lots of platforms these days make it easy to create concept maps digitally. You can do this in Google Slides, Canva, and more. Concept mapping is great for making connections and building on previous knowledge.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3><b>#10 Nearpod: </b></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Nearpod will 10x your PowerPoint lesson! Instead of simply flipping through slides, Nearpod allowed you to add virtual reality, checkpoint quizzes, games, and more.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3><b>#11 Flipgrid: </b></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">On this platform, students can create short videos. This is a good alternative to class presentations. You can also have students explain their work or create guided videos for other students.</span></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-3062 aligncenter" src="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/technology-in-science-classroom-3-300x200.png" alt="middle school science students using technology with teacher" width="416" height="277" srcset="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/technology-in-science-classroom-3-300x200.png 300w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/technology-in-science-classroom-3-1024x683.png 1024w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/technology-in-science-classroom-3-768x512.png 768w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/technology-in-science-classroom-3-600x400.png 600w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/technology-in-science-classroom-3.png 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 416px) 100vw, 416px" /></p>
<h3><b>#12 Canva for Education: </b></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Say goodbye to the mess of creating projects. With Canva, students can create infographics, brochures, posters, and more. Canva is a user-friendly website, and students will have fun putting their projects together.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3><b>#13 Google Slides:</b></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Slides aren’t just for the whole group. You can </span><a href="https://secondarysparks.com/5-google-slides-ideas-for-your-science-classroom/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">use them for stations</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, too! In fact, I’ve created an entire </span><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Earth-Space-Life-and-Physical-Science-Google-Slides-Print-Activities-Bundle-8330132?utm_source=edtech%20blog&amp;utm_campaign=Integrated%20science%20gs%20bundle"><span style="font-weight: 400;">integrated science Google Slides bundle</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> that includes digital activities for physical science, life science, and earth and space science.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3><b>#14 BrainPop Science:</b></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Even the big kids love Tim and Moby. BrainPop has short videos that teach complex concepts in an easily consumable way. I like to use these videos to introduce or review topics.</span></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-3076 aligncenter" src="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/measuring-matter-activities-pin-200x300.png" alt="" width="291" height="437" srcset="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/measuring-matter-activities-pin-200x300.png 200w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/measuring-matter-activities-pin-683x1024.png 683w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/measuring-matter-activities-pin-768x1152.png 768w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/measuring-matter-activities-pin-400x600.png 400w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/measuring-matter-activities-pin-600x900.png 600w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/measuring-matter-activities-pin.png 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 291px) 100vw, 291px" /></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I hope you feel inspired to use technology in the classroom. Don’t worry about trying everything at once. Just pick a few tools and slowly introduce them to students!</span></p> </div>

I want to share how I set up science interactive notebooks with my students so they are successful all year long.</span></p><p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-2694 aligncenter" src="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Interactive-science-notebook-with-cover-tabs-and-supplies-300x200.png" alt="Interactive science notebook titled &quot;physical science&quot; with tabs labeled nature of science, matter, energy, waves, forces and motion" width="483" height="322" srcset="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Interactive-science-notebook-with-cover-tabs-and-supplies-300x200.png 300w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Interactive-science-notebook-with-cover-tabs-and-supplies-1024x683.png 1024w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Interactive-science-notebook-with-cover-tabs-and-supplies-768x512.png 768w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Interactive-science-notebook-with-cover-tabs-and-supplies-600x400.png 600w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Interactive-science-notebook-with-cover-tabs-and-supplies.png 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 483px) 100vw, 483px" /></p><p> </p><h1><b>Setting Up Student Interactive Notebooks</b></h1><h2><b>#1 Pick Your Notebook Style</b></h2><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">My students always made fun of me because I was “anti-spiral notebooks.” I have good reasons, though! Personally, I don’t think spiral notebooks last as long. The stringy paper bits make a mess, and students love to pull out the metal spiral (making the journals an occupational hazard).</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If I had to pass off any advice, it would be to stick with composition notebooks. They last longer and are less bulky than the binder option.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">However, at the end of the day though, choose what works best for you and your students. Remember to also give students enough time to buy their notebooks. Many don’t go school supply shopping until after the first few days of school.</span></p><p> </p><h2><b>#2 Make a Day of It</b></h2><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A key to making this whole process successful is to take the time to set up student interactive notebooks. If you try to cram the process into ten minutes or put it together as you dive into content, it won’t work as well. Take my word for it.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Instead, block out a whole class period to set things up correctly.</span></p><h2><b>#3 Create Student Interactive Notebook Covers</b></h2><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I HIGHLY recommend buying </span><a href="https://amzn.to/3OdhoAB"><span style="font-weight: 400;">shipping labels (affiliate link)</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> to make covers for the science interactive notebooks. You can type and print students&#8217; information onto the sticker or have them stick it onto their notebooks and use a Sharpie to label it.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Personally, I like to put a sticker on the front and the back. This makes it easier to grade and organize the notebooks.</span></p><p> </p><h2><b>#4 Add a Table of Contents</b></h2><p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-2695 aligncenter" src="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/interactive-science-notebook-with-table-of-contents-300x200.png" alt="Interactive science notebook with a table of contents page and school supplies" width="485" height="323" srcset="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/interactive-science-notebook-with-table-of-contents-300x200.png 300w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/interactive-science-notebook-with-table-of-contents-1024x683.png 1024w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/interactive-science-notebook-with-table-of-contents-768x512.png 768w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/interactive-science-notebook-with-table-of-contents-600x400.png 600w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/interactive-science-notebook-with-table-of-contents.png 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 485px) 100vw, 485px" /></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Another idea for interactive notebooks is to add a table of contents. This should go at the front, and I recommend leaving a few empty pages. You can create a table of contents template for students to glue in or model how to create one.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Either way, show students how to use a table of content. This helps keep the students organized and able to find their notes and activities later.</span></p><p> </p><h2><b>#5 Create Divers for the Notebook</b></h2><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Next, decide how students will divide their student interactive notebooks. You can divide it by unit (this is how I like to do it) or by activity, like vocabulary, notes, warm ups, and more. Then, create table or divider pages students can glue in.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">You also want to make sure the entire class is dividing their notebook the same this. This makes it easy to model how students should set up their notebooks, plus will make it easy for you to find items you want to grade.</span></p><p> </p><h2><b>#6 Add an Assessment Tracker</b></h2><p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-2693 aligncenter" src="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/interactive-science-notebook-assessment-tracker-300x200.png" alt="Interactive science notebook with an assessment tracker, divider tabs and school supplies on wood table" width="482" height="321" srcset="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/interactive-science-notebook-assessment-tracker-300x200.png 300w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/interactive-science-notebook-assessment-tracker-1024x683.png 1024w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/interactive-science-notebook-assessment-tracker-768x512.png 768w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/interactive-science-notebook-assessment-tracker-600x400.png 600w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/interactive-science-notebook-assessment-tracker.png 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 482px) 100vw, 482px" /></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Lastly, science interactive notebooks don’t have to be just for content material. You can also use them for other class-related items. I like to add assessment trackers to the back of my students&#8217; notebooks. Then, throughout the year, students track their grades and have a quick, visual way to monitor their progress.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you are looking for tools or ideas to help you set up your student interactive notebook, grab the </span><a href="https://secondarysparks.com/product/interactive-notebook-set-up-starter-kit-for-all-subjects/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Interactive Notebook Set Up Kit</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. It includes templates for items like a table of contents, key vocabulary, learning goals, an assessment tracker, and more that students can glue into their notebooks.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you are looking for a guide to help you set up your interactive science notebooks, check out the freebie below filled with tips and tricks to make them a powerful resource.</span></p><p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-2689 aligncenter" src="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/1-200x300.png" alt="Pin titled &quot;How to set up your interactive science notebook&quot; with a physical science label, divider tabs and school supplies" width="270" height="405" srcset="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/1-200x300.png 200w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/1-683x1024.png 683w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/1-768x1152.png 768w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/1-400x600.png 400w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/1-600x900.png 600w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/1.png 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 270px) 100vw, 270px" /></p> </div>

									<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">One of the toughest parts about each class period is the transition from the hallway to the classroom. The hallway is full of chaos, with students having lots of freedom and opportunity to get into trouble! So transitioning into the classroom can be hard for students. I found that the best way to ease students in is to have a structured activity ready the moment they walk into class, like agenda slides. Not only do these slides end up being a great classroom management idea, but they help students review material throughout the year.</span></p>
<h1><b>How I Use Agenda Slides in My Classroom</b></h1>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-2699 aligncenter" src="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/physical-science-daily-agenda-slide-with-warm-up-300x200.png" alt="&quot;Welcome to Physical Science&quot; agenda slides on a large screen with school supplies" width="473" height="315" srcset="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/physical-science-daily-agenda-slide-with-warm-up-300x200.png 300w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/physical-science-daily-agenda-slide-with-warm-up-1024x683.png 1024w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/physical-science-daily-agenda-slide-with-warm-up-768x512.png 768w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/physical-science-daily-agenda-slide-with-warm-up-600x400.png 600w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/physical-science-daily-agenda-slide-with-warm-up.png 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 473px) 100vw, 473px" /></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As soon as my students walk into the room, they see an agenda slide projected onto the board or displayed on a screen. This slide has the agenda for the day, the objective, and the daily warm up.&nbsp;</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Students know they need to immediately get started on that warm up. This routine will take a while to build, but students will get the hang of it. My students knew they had about five minutes to work before I came around to start checking their warm up.</span></p>
<h2><b>The Advantages of Agenda Slides</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Because this becomes a daily routine and expectation, students can start the class period independently. As a teacher, we all hope our students will take accountability for their learning, so agenda slides are just one more area where that is possible.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">My students knew that if their warm ups weren’t complete by the time I walked around to check, I wouldn’t sign off on it to give them a grade for the day. This really got students to focus from the moment they came in through the door.&nbsp;</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">While students work, they also have a moment to catch their breath, calm down, and get focused before instruction begins. This is why agenda slides also double as a great classroom management idea. It serves as a structured buffer time for students and can eliminate some negative behavior during the lesson.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-2700 aligncenter" src="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/science-class-with-students-raising-hands-300x200.png" alt="middle school science students raising their hands to review a warm up activity" width="477" height="318" srcset="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/science-class-with-students-raising-hands-300x200.png 300w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/science-class-with-students-raising-hands-1024x683.png 1024w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/science-class-with-students-raising-hands-768x512.png 768w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/science-class-with-students-raising-hands-600x400.png 600w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/science-class-with-students-raising-hands.png 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 477px) 100vw, 477px" /></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Another advantage to agenda slides is setting the expectations for the day. If you’ve ever had students ask, “What are we doing today” on repeat, then you know students are curious about what’s happening in the classroom. With the slides, this goes right on the screen next to their warm up, so they can mentally prepare for class.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I also found that using slides supported my diverse learners who needed to see things visually or needed consistent reminders. With agenda slides, all instructions were clearly written out, and I could also add pictures for students who needed them.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I highly recommend trying agenda slides as a classroom management idea this school year. Grab the free agenda slides below and see if you experience any of the same benefits with your students!</span></p>

<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-1299 aligncenter" src="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/table-of-contents-and-cover-of-inb-300x200.png" alt="table of contents and marine science interactive notebook cover" width="455" height="303" srcset="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/table-of-contents-and-cover-of-inb-300x200.png 300w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/table-of-contents-and-cover-of-inb-600x400.png 600w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/table-of-contents-and-cover-of-inb-1024x683.png 1024w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/table-of-contents-and-cover-of-inb-768x512.png 768w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/table-of-contents-and-cover-of-inb.png 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 455px) 100vw, 455px" /></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Here’s the truth: If you don’t use a table of contents, kids will blindly paste things anywhere they can just to get it in before you do a notebook check. This means they end up an a notebook that is </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">far</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> from useful. To solve this problem in the future, my students will be required to have a table of content in their science interactive notebooks.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2><b>#2 Add Opportunities for Reflection&nbsp;</b></h2>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-1294 aligncenter" src="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/reflection-on-learning-in-science-inb-300x200.png" alt="reflection on learning in science interactive notebook" width="453" height="302" srcset="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/reflection-on-learning-in-science-inb-300x200.png 300w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/reflection-on-learning-in-science-inb-600x400.png 600w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/reflection-on-learning-in-science-inb-1024x683.png 1024w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/reflection-on-learning-in-science-inb-768x512.png 768w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/reflection-on-learning-in-science-inb.png 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 453px) 100vw, 453px" /></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A lot of times, we get busy moving from one unit to the next because there is a lot to cover. However, students need to stop and reflect.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I plan on adding some reflection pages into my student’s interactive notebooks for science. In this space, I can assess their knowledge and understanding of the current and previous unit. This will not only help them see their own growth but also help me see what areas need to be reviewed.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2><b>#3 Divide Up the Units</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">To make science interactive notebooks less chaotic, units need to be clearly divided. Kind of like a table of content, the more intertwined everything is &#8211; the harder it is to find material later. With well-organized science interactive notebooks, students can easily search for what they need without flipping through each page. That’ll make things easier for all of us!</span></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-1332 aligncenter" src="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/things-i-learned-from-using-inb-pin-200x300.png" alt="Composition notebook with pencil on top. text overlay reads&quot;how to make your interactive notebooks even better!&quot;" width="284" height="426" srcset="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/things-i-learned-from-using-inb-pin-200x300.png 200w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/things-i-learned-from-using-inb-pin-600x900.png 600w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/things-i-learned-from-using-inb-pin-683x1024.png 683w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/things-i-learned-from-using-inb-pin-768x1152.png 768w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/things-i-learned-from-using-inb-pin-400x600.png 400w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/things-i-learned-from-using-inb-pin.png 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 284px) 100vw, 284px" /></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2><b>#4 Teach Students How to Glue…Seriously!</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">You may laugh at me for this one, but my students really go crazy with glue. I often have to say “a dot is a lot” because students will </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">smear</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> glue everywhere. It makes a mess, leaves their notebook gooey, and takes forever to dry. Some students use so much glue that I can’t even open their notebooks. In the future, we will have quarterly lessons on this to remind them how to glue. I am not even kidding!</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2><b>#5 Track Student Progress</b></h2>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-1284 aligncenter" src="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Assessment-tracker-in-science-inb-300x200.png" alt="assessment tracker in interactive science notebook" width="453" height="302" srcset="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Assessment-tracker-in-science-inb-300x200.png 300w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Assessment-tracker-in-science-inb-600x400.png 600w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Assessment-tracker-in-science-inb-1024x683.png 1024w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Assessment-tracker-in-science-inb-768x512.png 768w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Assessment-tracker-in-science-inb.png 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 453px) 100vw, 453px" /></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Having students include progress tracking in their science interactive notebooks is a great way to keep them accountable for their learning. The data trackers help students see their strengths, weaknesses, and overall progress. There needs to be lots of conversation around these charts (like letting them know it’s not to shame them), but I think it’s really useful for students to see.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2><b>#6 Use Templates</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">To make things easier on myself in the future, I plan on using more templates for science interactive notebooks. Not every lab or demonstration needs its own special lab or write up. I created a general lab template, a general claim, evidence, reasoning (CER) template, and a predict, observe, explain (POE) template that helps with this!&nbsp; These templates work for labs, demos, videos and more. In fact, I made a bundle with all of my </span><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Science-Templates-Lab-Reports-CER-Predict-Observe-Explain-Distance-Learning-5964506?utm_source=How%20I%20change%20INB%20blog&amp;utm_campaign=Templates%20science"><span style="font-weight: 400;">no-prep, simple Science Templates.</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">&nbsp;</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I also created an Interactive</span><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Interactive-Notebook-Set-Up-Starter-Kit-for-All-Subjects-7144926?utm_source=How%20I%20change%20INB%20blog&amp;utm_campaign=INB%20set%20up"><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Notebook Set Up Kit</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> to help you prepare your science interactive notebooks at the start of the year. This set up kit includes a table of contents, learning goals, bellringer pages, vocabulary pages, and more.</span></p> </div>

									<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you teach in a science classroom, you probably know how important organization is. From test tubes to microscopes, science teachers are responsible for lots of supplies. However, being able to easily locate said supplies or find the right place to store it? That’s a different challenge. I want to share a few ideas for classroom storage that will keep your science classroom in tip-top shape.</span></p>
<p><em>Some of the links below are affiliate links. This means that, at zero cost to you, I will earn an affiliate commission if you click through the link and finalize a purchase.</em></p>
<h2>Ideas for classroom storage</h2>
<h3><b>Teacher ToolBox</b></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Middle schoolers are constantly losing their supplies…and on the hunt for new ones. I’ve found that having a </span><a href="https://amzn.to/430vR75"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Teacher ToolBox</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> is the best way to keep my personal items organized and out of sight from students. I use the toolbox for smaller items like Flair pens, mechanical pencils, Sharpies, Post-its, and more.</span></p>
<h3><b>Rolling Storage Cart</b></h3>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-1285 aligncenter" src="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/color-trolley-cart-for-cardstock-300x200.png" alt="colorful rolling storage cart for cardstock and paper" width="423" height="282" srcset="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/color-trolley-cart-for-cardstock-300x200.png 300w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/color-trolley-cart-for-cardstock-600x400.png 600w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/color-trolley-cart-for-cardstock-1024x683.png 1024w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/color-trolley-cart-for-cardstock-768x512.png 768w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/color-trolley-cart-for-cardstock.png 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 423px) 100vw, 423px" /></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">One of my favorite classroom storage ideas is </span><a href="https://amzn.to/3NvuebQ"><span style="font-weight: 400;">rolling storage carts</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. You can store everything from assignments, cardstock, colored paper, hall passes, and more. Plus, if you ever have to move classrooms or switch up your classroom layout, you can simply roll it where it needs to go!</span></p>
<h3><b>Binders</b></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">While it may not be revolutionary, </span><a href="https://amzn.to/3COKhg5"><span style="font-weight: 400;">binders</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> still stand as a useful tool for classroom organization. I like to store my hard copies of activities and assignments in binders, but you can also use it for student work, student data, important admin forms, and more.</span></p>
<h3><b>Border Storage</b></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Borders can be a real pain to organize (especially if you have a border obsession like me). Luckily, this </span><a href="https://amzn.to/3PyfcEP"><span style="font-weight: 400;">border storage</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> pouch makes it easy. This idea of classroom storage will allow you to see what borders you have quickly.</span></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-1316 aligncenter" src="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/classroom-organizing-pin-200x300.png" alt="Photo containers used for task cards and warm ups in clear and rainbow on a table. Text reads :organization must-haves for middle school science" width="288" height="432" srcset="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/classroom-organizing-pin-200x300.png 200w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/classroom-organizing-pin-600x900.png 600w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/classroom-organizing-pin-683x1024.png 683w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/classroom-organizing-pin-768x1152.png 768w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/classroom-organizing-pin-400x600.png 400w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/classroom-organizing-pin.png 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 288px) 100vw, 288px" /></p>
<h3><b>Stackable Containers</b></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">These </span><a href="https://amzn.to/3PsBGY0"><span style="font-weight: 400;">stackable containers</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> are my favorite way to organize items for specific units. This organization idea helps me keep my classroom in order and lab materials from landing all over the place. The containers are great for STEM kits, lab kits, or any other supplies you have.</span></p>
<h3><b>Supply Caddies</b></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">These </span><a href="https://amzn.to/3D88bU9"><span style="font-weight: 400;">supply caddies</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> are perfect for group work or shared table supplies. Inside the caddies, I keep day to day necessities like pencils, pens, and glue. You can also use them to store lab materials. Not only do they keep you organized, but they cut down on students getting up and wandering around looking for materials.</span></p>
<h3><b>Photo Storage Containers</b></h3>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-1292 aligncenter" src="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/photo-storage-container-for-task-cards-300x200.png" alt="colored and clear photo storage containers with task cards" width="425" height="283" srcset="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/photo-storage-container-for-task-cards-300x200.png 300w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/photo-storage-container-for-task-cards-600x400.png 600w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/photo-storage-container-for-task-cards-1024x683.png 1024w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/photo-storage-container-for-task-cards-768x512.png 768w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/photo-storage-container-for-task-cards.png 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 425px) 100vw, 425px" /></p>
<p><a href="https://amzn.to/3NrJGG0"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Photo storage containers</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> are the task card storage solution of my dreams. I keep exit tickets in here, plus I sort all my task cards by unit with these. It makes it really easy to grab a set later. For example, when reviewing physical science I easily whipped out my </span><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Physical-Science-Editable-Tasks-Cards-Bundle-Distance-Learning-5654609?utm_source=Storage%20EOY%20&amp;utm_campaign=Task%20cards%20PS"><span style="font-weight: 400;">physical science task cards</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> for stations and handed out the </span><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Physical-Science-Editable-Warm-Ups-Bundle-Distance-Learning-5654632?utm_source=Storage%20EOY%20&amp;utm_campaign=Warm%20ups%20PS"><span style="font-weight: 400;">physical science warm-up task cards</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> as students walked in the room. Read about how you use task cards in your classroom <a href="https://secondarysparks.com/3-reasons-to-use-science-task-cards-in-middle-school/">here!</a></span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Want to try out a set of task cards? Grab the </span><a href="https://secondarysparks.ck.page/774672aca6"><span style="font-weight: 400;">free physical science task card set here</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I hope these ideas for classroom storage helped you brainstorm some ideas for your own science classroom. Many of these organizational tools I have used for years, and they have been lifesavers when it comes to keeping my lab clean and organized.</span></p> </div>
