Some of these topics can feel intimidating at first, but with the right structure, they become very manageable.

Do I have to teach all of this at once?

Absolutely not.

One of the biggest misconceptions about homeschool science is that you need to cover everything all the time. You don’t.

Most homeschool science curriculum plans follow on of two approaches:

Option 1: Rotate by year

6th grade: Earth Science
7th grade: Life Science
8th grade: Physical Science

Option 2: Spiral all three each year

You’ll introduce a mix of topics from each branch throughout the year.

Honestly? I’ve done both and I tend to prefer the mixed approach. It keeps things fresh and helps students make connections across topics.

Edible Earth Science: Modeling Movement with a Plate Tectonics Food Lab

If you’ve ever taught plate tectonics, you know this moment.

You’re explaining how Earth’s plates move. You’re using hand motions. You’ve drawn arrows on the board.

You’ve said “convergent,” “divergent,” and “transform” at least twelve times. A few students are nodding along…but deep down, you can tell most of them are still trying to picture something they’ve never seen and can’t really imagine.

Because while plate tectonics is fascinating science, it’s also incredibly abstract.

We’re asking students to understand processes that happen deep below Earth’s surface, over millions of years, with forces they can’t observe directly. And while diagrams and videos help, they don’t always click the way we want them to.

Teaching the rock cycle, weathering, erosion, and deposition can feel a little rocky (pun intended!) for both teachers and students. These processes happen over millions of years, so trying to help middle school students visualize them in a 45-60 minutes class period can be challenging.

The vocabulary gets tricky, the diagrams start blending together, and before you know it, students are mixing up metamorphic and igneous rocks.

So, if your students struggle to make sense of Earth’s changing surface, you’re not alone.

The good news? With the right mix of visuals and labs, you can help these abstract concepts click in a way that feels fun and memorable without needing a time machine or a personal volcano.

Classroom-tested strategies to help students visualize Earth’s changing surface

Build background knowledge with guided notes and visuals

Before we jump into labs and activities, it helps to ground students in key terms they’ll see over and over again. I like starting with Rock Cycle Guided Notes because they organize vocabulary like igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic in a way students can revisit later.

Cornell notes or interactive notebooks can also help keep everything neat and easy to find.

Adding diagrams or anchor charts for students to label in their interactive notebooks is a game-changer. It gives them a visual they can refer back to during labs or stations work, and it helps clarify where each process fits in the bigger picture.

This Starburst Rock Cycle lab breaks down the entire rock cycle in the most tangible and delicious way possible. It’s simple, but it models each stage beautifully and students immediately see the changes happening right in front of them.

How to set up the lab:

Unwrap and cut Starbursts to represent sediments.
Press them together to form sedimentary rock.
Apply gentle heat to model metamorphic changes.
Melt and cool the candy to form igneous rock.

A few classroom management tips:

Use wax paper to help keep things clean.
Set up clearly labeled stations.

I’m a big believer that the more students do, the more they understand. That’s why interactive stations are one of my go-to moves during my Earth science units. When students rotate, sort, build, compare, and talk through the concepts, those tricky processes start to feel way more approachable.

Rock Sort Showdown
Set out different rock samples or cards and challenge groups to sort them into igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic piles. Then throw in a “prove it” card where they have to defend at least one choice.

Process Match-Up Relay
Give students cards labeled melting, cooling, weathering, and compacting. Their mission: match each process to a description, diagram, or photo.

Rock Cycle Puzzle Challenge
Let students build the rock cycle from a pile of scrambled pieces. Sneak in a few twists like uplift or pressure so they have to slow down and think instead of just putting arrows in a circle.

You can run these as stations, a gallery walk, partner challenges, or a whole-class competition if everyone needs to shake off the afternoon energy. And if differentiation is your jam, sprinkle in supports like a word bank or leveled sets, or and add lightning-round bonus cards for your early finishers.

The goal is simple: get students talking, moving, and interacting with the content. When they piece the ideas together themselves, the concepts stick in a way that lectures alone just can’t pull off.

Try the Rock Cycle Activities

Visualize changes with a weathering, erosion, and deposition gallery walk

Gallery walks just work. They get students up and moving, they break big ideas into manageable chunks, and they encourage observation skills in a way a worksheet never will.

This activity focuses on slow geoscience processes like mechanical weathering, chemical weathering, erosion, and deposition. You’ll tape images around the room, each paired with a quick question or prompt, and students rotate through them one at a time. Because they’re only looking at a single image per station, they stay focused without feeling overwhelmed.

Here’s how to run it:

Set up stations by taping the images around the room.
Group your students and assign each group to a starting station.
Give clear directions. Students have about a minute per station to study the image and answer the question that goes with it.
Use a timer to signal when it’s time to rotate.
Continue rotating until each group has seen every station.

Gallery walks are low-prep, high-impact, and even better if you can laminate the images so you can use them year after year.

To add a fun twist, try including a mystery photo that students have to debate, or add QR codes that link to short clips showing the same process in action.

Some days you’ve got a full lab planned, and some days you only have 12 minutes and a class that just got back from an assembly. That’s when mini demos are your best friend.

These 5-10 minute activities are perfect for warm-ups, station rotations, or those moments when you need something meaningful without committing to a whole-period setup.

Weathering

Shake a few sugar cubes in a jar with water or sand. It’s quick, it’s easy, and students instantly see how rocks break down over time.

Erosion

Give each group a cookie and a water dropper. By adding a little bit of water to the cookie, students will be able to see how moving water carries materials away.

Deposition

Layer sand and pebbles in a jar and let students watch how materials settle. Simple, visual, and super easy to prep.

These bite-sized demos keep students engaged without eating up your entire class period. And honestly, they’re such a great reminder that even though Earth’s processes take ages in real life, we can model them in fast, approachable ways that actually stick.

Rock Cycle Journey role play game

If your students have wiggles to spare (so… pretty much every middle schooler), this activity is such a fun way to get them moving and strengthen their understanding of the rock cycle.

Students take on the role of a rock particle and “travel” through different processes based on a dice roll or spinner.

Set it up like this:

Create dice or spinner options with processes like melt, cool, weather, compact, uplift, and more
Students move to the next stage based on their roll
Each stop gets recorded in their journey log or interactive notebook
At the end, students share where they ended up and why

It’s super visual, super memorable, and a refreshing break from the usual notes-and-diagrams routine.

If you want to level it up, have students turn their path into a comic strip! They love it, and it quietly reinforces their understanding without feeling like extra work.

“Which Process Am I?” mystery cards

These are perfect for the days when you want something quick and low-prep that still packs a punch. Each card gives clues like, “I move materials from one place to another with wind and water,” and students have to decide whether it’s weathering, erosion, or deposition.

You can use them as bell ringers, exit tickets, partner practice, or even a whole-class review game. It’s one of those flexible activities that fits into whatever tiny slice of time you have — which is very real on those days when the bell feels like it rings five minutes after you start teaching.

Middle schoolers learn best when they’re moving, talking, and making connections and this unit is the perfect playground for that. Mix and match the activities that fit your classroom, your time, and your students.

The weather this time of year is too good to pass up, and giving students a chance to get outside is the perfect way to mix up the routine while sneaking in some learning through easy outdoor science activities.

Plus, stepping outside the four walls of the classroom can help students see science in action — not just on a worksheet or in a textbook. There’s so much happening right outside your door that ties beautifully into your curriculum (maybe even in ways you haven’t thought of yet).

Middle School Physical Science Activities to Try Outside

Race Against Time: An Outdoor Science Activity for Speed, Distance, and Time

Distance-time graphs and average speed problems can feel a bit boring when they stay on the page. But getting students outside and physically involved in the process can completely change their perspective.

One of my favorite outdoor science activities for this concept is the running lab. This lab is a hand-on, high-energy way for students to apply what they’ve learned.

Here’s how to set it up:

Choose your track: Use your school’s track if available, or measure out a set distance on the playground or sidewalk.
Group your students: Each group needs a runner (or walker), a timer, and a recorder
Complete three trials: Every student should complete at least three timed runs or walks
Calculate and graph: Students calculate their average speed from the data and create a distance-time graph to represent their motion

This activity not only boosts engagement, but also helps students connect movement and math in a real-world, memorable way.

TIP: If you’ve got students who would rather walk than run, no problem — they can calculate their walking speed instead.

Sound Waves in Action: Try the Classic Cup-and-String Experiment

Remember playing telephone with cups and string as a kid? Bring that same energy to your classroom by letting students experiment with different lengths of string. They’ll see firsthand how sound waves travel through a medium — and you can even make it extra fun by playing music quietly through the cup and having partners guess the song!

Newton’s Laws in Action: The Ultimate Outdoor Olympics

Set up outside stations that each demonstrate one of Newton’s Laws of Motion. Students rotate through the stations, figure out which law is being represented, and explain why. It’s hands-on, it’s active, and it gets everyone thinking critically about how physics shows up in the real world.

Sunny Science: Investigating Thermal Energy Transfer

Have students place objects in different locations and measure temperature changes.

They’ll collect data and discuss how conduction, convection, and radiation each play a role. It’s an easy way to connect abstract concepts to everyday life.

Mapping the Stars: An Outdoor Science Activity to Model the Solar System

Think your students know how far Neptune is from the sun? Think again. Middle school science teachers love this hands-on solar system lesson plan because it’s:

Highly visual – Perfect for helping students grasp planetary scale and distance
Kinesthetic – Students physically place planets at scaled distances
Unforgettable – the massive gap between the inner and outer planets always gets a reaction!

Using an Inflatable Solar System Set and a Mapping Tool, students space out the planets across your classroom—instantly grasping the scale of the solar system. Have students space the planets according to their distance from the sun.

Students head outside to spot real-world signs of erosion like sidewalk cracks, tree roots poking through soil, and puddles eating away at dirt paths. Then, they can document their discoveries by snapping photos or recording observations in a journal.

Become a Meteorologist: Collecting Real-World Weather Data with Your Middle School Students

No need for fancy equipment — just step outside and start observing! This low-prep outdoor science activity gives your middle school students a chance to become meteorologists as they collect and analyze weather data over time.

Students can track:

Cloud types – Use a simple chart or app for identification
Wind direction and speed – Try using a DIY windsock or just observe movement of nearby trees and flags
Temperature and humidity – A basic outdoor thermometer and hygrometer (or smartphone app!) will do the trick
Rainfall totals – Use a rain gauge (or even a marked plastic cup) to measure daily precipitation

Make it a weeklong project or build it into your daily bellwork:

Students can chart changes and look for patterns over several days.

In your Earth spheres unit, it’s key for your students to not only recognize the four spheres—the geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere—but also understand how they all work together. While students can easily pick out each sphere on its own, the real challenge comes in showing how these systems are all connected and rely on one another.

In this blog post, I’m sharing some practical tips and fun activities to help your students grasp the connections between Earth’s spheres. These strategies will make your lessons more engaging and interactive, and they’ll help your students understand how Earth’s systems work as a whole!

Tips for Teaching Earth's Spheres:

1. Focus on Prefixes

When students encounter new scientific concepts, breaking them down into manageable parts can make all the difference. One of the easiest ways to do this is by focusing on the prefixes of each sphere:

Geo (Earth)
Bio (Life)
Hydro (Water)
Atmos (Air)

These little language cues help students connect the dots between the spheres and other science concepts they’ll encounter later. For example, once students know “bio” means life, they’ll feel more confident when they hear words like biome or biosphere. It’s like giving them a secret code for understanding science!

And the best part? Once they grasp these prefixes, they’re set up for success in other subjects, too. Whether you’re teaching biology, ecology, or even geography, this one simple trick can make a big difference in their overall understanding.

2. Teach Each Sphere on Its Own First

Before diving into how Earth’s spheres interact, it’s helpful to start with each one on its own. Think of it like building a puzzle—if you start by understanding each piece, the whole picture makes more sense.

For example, in the beginning, focus on the geosphere (Earth’s solid parts), then move on to the hydrosphere (water), atmosphere (air), and biosphere (living things). Giving students time to fully understand what each sphere is all about before diving into their interactions helps clear up confusion later.

Plus, when students have examples and visuals of each sphere, they’ll feel more confident when you start talking about how they connect. This approach lets them anchor their learning and set a solid foundation, making it easier to explore those more complex relationships down the road.

3. Use Visuals to Show Connections Between Earth's Spheres

Sometimes seeing is believing. Visuals are key to making abstract concepts tangible. By using pictures or diagrams that show the spheres in action, you’re giving your students a clear, concrete way to grasp what’s happening.

For example, showing an image of a volcano (geosphere) erupting and sending ash into the atmosphere, or lava flowing into water (hydrosphere), brings the idea of interacting spheres to life. These visuals not only help students see the connection between the spheres but also give them a chance to talk through what’s going on. It makes it easier for them to absorb the material and understand how everything fits together.

Using real-world images—like NASA’s satellite photos—can make your lessons feel more exciting and relevant to what’s happening outside the classroom. It’s a fun and hands-on way to reinforce learning!

Let’s face it, field trips aren’t always feasible—especially when you’re trying to teach about Earth’s systems. But virtual field trips? Game changer!

Tools like Nearpod let you take students on immersive journeys to places like Yellowstone National Park or NASA’s Earth Observatory. It’s the next best thing to being there in person, and it gives students a chance to see Earth’s spheres working together in real life.

Imagine showing your class geothermal activity from Yellowstone (geosphere), or how climate change impacts the biosphere and atmosphere. Students can actually watch it all unfold in front of them! It’s a fun and interactive way to teach the connections between the spheres without leaving the classroom.

5. Use the Greenhouse Effect PhET Simulation

The Greenhouse Effect PhET simulation is a great tool for helping students understand how Earth’s spheres interact and how changes in one sphere can affect the entire system. It’s a hands-on way for students to see how changes in Earth’s systems affect one another.

The simulation lets students experiment with variables like CO2 levels and watch how they impact the Earth’s temperature. This is a great way to show students the tangible effects of things like climate change—without getting bogged down in too much theory. Students can actually interact with the model and see the cause-and-effect relationships in real-time.

It’s a visual tool that makes the concept of Earth’s spheres interacting feel much more accessible and understandable, and the interactive nature of the simulation keeps students engaged and helps them retain the information in a fun way.

One of my favorite ways to wrap up a unit is with a choice board. Choice boards are a great way to give students a little freedom when showing what they’ve learned.

Christmas Science Activities for Your Middle School Class

The weeks between Thanksgiving and Winter Break are always hectic—tests, grades, and plenty of holiday energy from students. However, that’s why I’ve curated some of the best Christmas science activities to make your classroom festive, fun, and aligned with your middle school science standards. These activities will keep the holiday spirit alive all while keeping your class engaged and learning.

1. Element Ornaments: Decorate Your Chemistree

I love getting this activity done early because it doubles as holiday decor for my classroom and my middle school students love them!

Each student gets an ornament representing an element from the periodic table. Next , they research their element, color and cut out their ornament, and we laminate them to make them last longer. I even have a Christmas tree in my classroom designated for this activity. We call it our “Chemistree,” get it?!

This activity makes your science classroom festive while reinforcing students’ understanding of the periodic table and element properties.

2. Organ Ornaments

Similarly, take the same ornament concept and apply it to human anatomy to review body systems! This is a fun and festive addition to your Christmas science activities, helping students review human body systems while adding holiday décor to your classroom. Each ornament represents a different organ, and students research its function and identify the body system it belongs to.

How it works:

1️⃣ Each student picks an organ and designs their ornament.
2️⃣ They color, cut, and (if you’re feeling fancy) laminate it.
3️⃣ Add a ribbon, and suddenly, your classroom tree is full of personalized ornaments!

The best part? Watching your students proudly place their ornaments on the tree. It’s one of those moments that reminds me why I love teaching (and makes me forget how loud middle schoolers can be). Alternatively, If you don’t want to use a tree, you can place these on a bulletin board.

4. Christmas Light Circuits

Try using mini holiday lights to build series and parallel circuits! Students can decorate a small paper tree by “lighting it up” with their circuits. This hands-on activity is festive and reinforces key electrical concepts.

5. Snowball Catapults

Using marshmallows as snowballs, challenge students to build catapults with craft sticks, rubber bands, and other materials. This activity is a great way to discuss potential and kinetic energy while getting students moving and creating.

6. Science Snow Globes

Have students design snow globes that illustrate scientific concepts like the water cycle or ecosystems. This craft allows for creativity while connecting back to science standards.

7. Crystal Ornaments with Borax

Teach crystallization with this engaging experiment, a perfect addition to your Christmas science activities! Students use pipe cleaners, borax, and mason jars to create beautiful crystal ornaments. It’s a multi-day process, but the results are always worth it.

Start by creating your borax solution and pouring it into the jar. Then, have students design the shape they want for their ornament using pipe cleaners. Once they’re finished, they’ll tie a string to the ornament, hang it over a popsicle stick, and let it dangle into the borax solution, ensuring it’s fully submerged. Let the ornaments sit overnight for the best crystallization results.

8. Holiday Slime Lab

If you’re braver than me, your students will love this lab!

Make red and green slime while discussing polymers and non-Newtonian fluids. You can even have students discuss the changes in matter and physical properties such viscosity, mass, volume, density, texture, shape, and elasticity.

9. STEM Challenges

Have some fun with holiday themed STEM activities! These activities bring holiday cheer to your science classroom while keeping students engaged and learning. Pick your favorites and make this season merry and bright — and educational!

Santa’s Parachute: Design a parachute to safely deliver gifts using coffee filters, string, and small weights. Test which design lands most gently.
Elf Workshop Towers: Use marshmallows, candy, and toothpicks to build the tallest, most stable tower. Discuss engineering and stability.
Sled Acceleration: Build small sleds with weights (like jingle bells) to explore how mass impacts acceleration. Tie it into Newton’s second law.

Engage Your Students with These 5 Station Ideas for Middle School Science

1. The Create Station

The Create Station is all about visual representation. Students use their creativity to make diagrams, comic strips, trading cards, or infographics that represent the science concept we’re studying.

This station is especially helpful for visual learners. These creative projects become handy study tools that students can look back on later. It helps make the concepts stick and easier to understand.

Examples of the Create Station

For example, during a Taxonomy unit, students could create an imaginary or real life organism that represents one from one of the three domains of life.

2. The Discover Station

The Discover Station allows students to dive deeper into our current topic by conducting research. I like to set up a few laptops with guiding questions that extend classroom learning into real-world applications.

One way to set up a Discover Station during a unit on the Earth’s Layers could include students researching real-world application of Earth’s layers.

3. The Sort Station

The Sort Station is one of my favorites because it’s quick, collaborative, and super easy to set up. Students can work together to match or categorize things like vocabulary words.

I love using sorting activities in stations, but they’re also great as mini games or challenges. Try saying, “Which group can finish the sorting activity first?” to add some friendly competition!

These are also perfect to have on hand for those days when your lesson wraps up early. Sorting activities are engaging, versatile, and a fun way to keep the learning going!

4. The Writing Station

The Writing Station is all about getting students to think critically and put their ideas into words. I give them higher-order thinking questions that make them explain their reasoning and back it up with evidence from class.

It’s such a great way to see how well they’re understanding the material and how they connect concepts. Plus, it’s awesome practice for scientific communication!

5. The Experiment Station

The Experiment Station is usually my students’ favorite station! In this station, they actually get to complete a mini lab or observe a demonstration I’m completing for them.

These bite-sized experiments spark curiosity and give students a direct experience with the concepts they’re learning. After the activity, students answer reflective questions to deepen their understanding.

During a student’s middle school science experience, they learn SO many different topics within so many units and even more vocabulary. How do you get them to remember those topics long-term after you’ve already passed on to the next unit? It’s easier than you think and it’s the reason I use spiral review science warm ups daily.

What is the Importance of Spiral Review in Science?

Well, many science topics tend to blend together or build up on each other in many ways. Think about things like heat transfer and convection in the Earth’s mantle or talking about atoms and how they make up some of the tiniest life forms like single-celled bacteria. Not only that, but if you teach an 8th grade science class or any grade that has a standardized science test, it’s crucial that you review. Often, so much is covered on those state tests and it feels like you never have enough time to finish your own pacing guide, let alone review previous grade level material.

What is a Warm Up?

Warm ups, bellringers, Do nows, starters, etc. There are so many names to define the same thing. Basically, a warm up is a question or quick activity that students do the moment they walk in the door. It shouldn’t take more than 5 minutes to do and those 5 minutes can be magic. How’s that?

You can complete your attendance on time.
Reduce student distractions during transition time in the hallway.
Get students thinking about science the moment they walk in.
Review previously taught material.
After students work on them, I can review the question/address any misconceptions quickly.

I could go on and on about warm ups and why I love using them in middle school science but for now, let’s just focus on how I use them for spiral review.

How do you Choose Questions?

The questions I choose from my warm ups vary by topic. I try to include 1-2 Earth/Space questions, Life Science Questions and Physical Science questions per week. Each day, the students answer 1-2 questions in which they need to explain their answers. This has helped me expose my students to a little bit of everything for review throughout the school year. Questions for the unit I am currently teaching will be in the set of questions for the week as well.

Another tip I have for you is to never use multiple-choice or true/false questions. Why? Because students will just circle any old answer and say they completed the warm up. Some won’t even read the question. Now, I understand those standardized test questions are usually multiple choice and students need that exposure but, if you need to do it this way, have students explain why they choose their answer to you. Not only will they need to think about what they know but it will allow you to understand what their thought process was while they answered. This gives you another way to see what misconceptions or errors in thought need to be addressed.

How Do You Present Warm Ups to Students?

Print out a template that already has the questions on them for students. This is a great method for creating your warm ups in advance and not having to think about a new question every day. I like to add images or clip art to mine so that students can easily find certain questions or use those images to answer them. This is how they look.

2. You can also give students a blank template and have students copy the question on their own from a presented slide or question written on the board. I give the same template, just blank.

3. Go completely digital! Have students keep a digital interactive science notebook of warm up questions. That way, you can keep it all on your school’s LMS and make grading easier.

How Do You Grade Warm Ups?

I go more in detail about this process in this blog post, but I check them daily for completion. I make sure they answered the question completely. It doesn’t even need to be correct, just answered. I want to see what students are thinking in relation to the topic. Guessing is better than “I don’t know!” I can address misconceptions with a wrong answer rather than a simple “IDK” written across the paper. So yes, these are a participation/completion grade in my class but you can choose to do them in a way that suits you and your students.

Using the spiral review method in my warm ups has decreased my stress levels in regards to review. I don’t worry about cramming content weeks before the testing season because we review little by little each day!

Why You Should Try Project-Based Learning in Middle School Science

Project-Based Learning, or PBL, just seems to be one of those buzzwords in education right now. You hear about it online, your school’s district or admin might be pushing it and you’re unsure because it feels like just another trend in education that will fade. Let me be the first to tell you that I thought the same way when I first heard about PBL. Then, I actually tried it and it changed my entire mindset on the topic, for better. Let me tell you why project-based learning in middle school science is something you should try at least once during the school year.

It's Not Your Average Project

Project-based learning in middle school science is not the same as the projects you’re used to assigning in class. It’s not limited to things like edible cell models, posters of the solar system or powerpoint presentations on Newton’s laws of motion. It’s bigger and much more meaningful than that. It’s an experience students will remember.

PBLWorks (bie.org) defines project-based learning as “a teaching method in which students learn by actively engaging in real-world and personally meaningful projects.” Not the vibe you get from a simple poster project or shoebox diorama, right? The focus on PBL is to relate your classroom content to the real-world. This makes it more relatable to students so that you spark their interest, make them curious and get what we all want from our middle schoolers: buy-in.

Real-World Relevance

PBL takes classroom content and relates it to the real world. By having students answer a driving question that requires critical thinking and problem solving skills, you are creating a learning experience that is more meaningful to students. Once you tap into a student’s interests and align standards with it, you are likely to maintain engagement. How many times have you been asked “how does this relate to my life?” in your science class? Give them the opportunity to find the answer themselves in an authentic way.

Inspire Creativity and Innovation

Your students have talents and abilities beyond what they demonstrate on a summative assessment. PBl offers students a chance to have some autonomy in their learning, encourages creativity and allows them to be innovative. During the OBL process, students have the chance to explore different solutions to a problem, try out new ideas and think outside the box.

As the teacher, you are the “guide on the side” during the PBL process vs being the “sage on the stage.” The autonomy your students will have will allow them to explore learning in a way that is different from any other way they have learned before. You are tapping into students’ natural curiosity and their desire to explore.

PBL Encourages Collaboration

Having students work together to answer the PBL driving question fosters collaboration because students are required to communicate, share ideas and coordinate their efforts to achieve a common goal. These are skills that are not only important in the classroom, but will follow them into their lives through adulthood.

The feedback process can also be very impactful for students. By providing, and receiving feedback from their peers, students learn how to use constructive dialogue and refine their thoughts with the help of their peers.

Of course, collaboration will sometimes involve conflict. Students may not always see eye to eye. It’s important for students to navigate these challenges and work to solve them appropriately. Once again, this is another skill that will follow them into adulthood. PBL promotes open communication, encourages productive working relationships and develops interpersonal skills.

Your Students Will Surprise You

They will surprise you in the best way. Letting go of some of the control in the classroom and giving your students autonomy in their learning can have real benefits. You will see things in your students that you normally don’t get the opportunity to see. You will be able to see their creative skills, how they work with others to solve problems, watch them actively work to come up with a solution, revise their work and present their findings. You will learn so much about your students beyond their academic skills which can be such a rewarding experience for not only the student, but for you as the teacher as well.

1. Create a Musical Instrument: Sound Waves Project Based Learning

This is a five-part project-based learning activity for students about sound waves. This project allows students to take their knowledge of sound waves and apply it to creating their own musical instrument, advertisement for that instrument and a music video. This can be done after a unit on sound waves and energy or throughout.

2. Hurricanes Project Based Learning: Tracking and Preparing for a Storm

This is a Project-Based Learning activity that can be implemented in almost any science classroom for a hurricanes or severe weather unit. It is all about hurricanes. Students will learn how storm systems are tracked throughout the season, how to prepare for an approaching storm and create a PSA or newscast to help the community prepare.

3. Plastic Pollution and its Impact on the Biodiversity of Coral Reefs

This is a Project-Based Learning activity that can be implemented in almost any science classroom and comes with a digital google slides version. It is all about how plastic pollution has an effect on the biodiversity of the coral reefs. Students compile research, create a public service announcement and then an action plan to create a solution to this real-world problem.

How to Infuse Current Events in your Science Classroom

“How does this even relate to us?!” This is a question you get a lot in your middle school science classes, right? It’s not always easy to show students the answer. Some topics in your science class are hard to find hands-on labs for and sometimes an online video just doesn’t do it justice. This is one of the reasons I love using current events in the science classroom. They relate what you’re teaching in the classroom to the real world.

Why Should You Use Current Events?

By using current events in your classroom, you are relating topics from your curriculum to the real world. You are giving students the opportunity to learn about something going on right now in the world that ties into what they are learning in the classroom. This brings that topic to life in a brand new way. It shows its relevance in the world and answers that famous question you get in your middle school classroom which is “why is this important?”

Science is constantly evolving and changing with new discoveries and technological advancements. Students need to understand that and what better way to help them understand it than to actually see that it is occurring in real time? Promotion of scientific literacy will also give them a way to look up this information on their own so they can make informed decisions about their lives using articles that are from reputable sources.

Also, not only are you relating your science standards to the real-world, but you are also helping your students become better critical thinkers and improving their writing skills. The ELA teachers will thank you!

How Can You Infuse Them in Your Classroom?

There are a few ways you can infuse current events into your science classroom.

1. Find an article related to what you are teaching at the time. For example, if you are currently on a unit about galaxies, you may want to find an article about a new, recently-discovered galaxy that is light years away. Have all the students complete a science current events template like the one shown below to learn about it and describe how it relates to what they are learning.

2. Dedicate a section or wall of your classroom to this. I called mine “Science in the News.” I used a string and some clothes pins to add various articles I found online to, what looked like, a clothes line. Students can walk up to the wall, find an article that interests them and fill out the same current events template shown in the image above. I loved to find informative articles as well as some more silly ones that related to science but also would peak students interest. Students would grab the article, a template and start writing.

Whether you teach Earth Space, Life Science, Physical Science, Marine Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, STEM, Forensics or any other secondary science subject, there is a ton of news sources you can use to find articles to suit your needs.
