Classroom Procedures for Middle School Science That Saved My Sanity

Middle school science is one of the most fun subjects to teach…and also one of the easiest classes to lose control of if you don’t have strong classroom procedures for middle school science in place.

Think about it. We ask students to participate in labs, move through stations, collaborate with partners, use supplies, complete notebook activities, transition between tasks, and somehow remember where they put their papers. That’s a lot for adults, let alone 11-14 year olds.

Early in my teaching career, I thought students would naturally figure out what to do. Surely they knew how to enter a classroom, get started on an assignment, or clean up after a lab, right?

Wrong.

One of the biggest game changers in my classroom was realizing that effective classroom procedures for middle school science need to be explicitly taught, practiced, modeled, and revisited all year long.

The good news? Strong procedures don’t make your classroom rigid or boring. In fact, they create the structure that allows students to have more fun, participate in more hands-on learning, and spend less time wondering what they’re supposed to be doing.

If your science classroom feels a little chaotic, these are the procedures that made the biggest difference for me.

Start Class the Same Way Every Day

Middle school students thrive on consistency. When they know exactly what to do when they walk through the door, you immediately eliminate a huge amount of unnecessary chaos.

In my classroom, students enter and immediately:

Grab their science notebooks
Begin the warm-up activity
Check the agenda slide
Gather any materials they needed for the lesson

The goal was simple: students should know what to do before I even start talking.

Honestly, this routine should run like a well-oiled machine.

One thing that helped tremendously was using daily agenda slides. Students could instantly see what we were doing that day, what materials they needed, and what was expected of them.

The fewer questions you have to answer in the first five minutes of class, the smoother everything else becomes.

Never Underestimate the Power of a Daily Warm-Up

Speaking of starting class, let’s talk about warm-ups.

Middle schoolers are not walking into your classroom ready to sit quietly and wait patiently for instruction. They have hallway stories to share. Snacks to trade. Drama to discuss. Questions to ask. Random observations that absolutely cannot wait.

A meaningful warm-up gives students something productive to focus on immediately. Even better, it sets the tone for the entire class period.

I love using warm-ups for:

Spiral review
Bell ringers
Vocabulary practice
Science phenomena
Quick reflection questions
Retrieval practice

Not only does this reduce behavior issues, but it also helps students retain information over time.

Some of the best warm-ups revisit concepts we learned weeks or even months earlier. Science builds on itself, and students need regular opportunities to reconnect with prior learning.

Use Timers for Everything

Students work better when they can physically see how much time remains. Telling students they have five minutes to complete a task and actually displaying a five-minute timer are two completely different things. Honestly, I could probably benefit from someone putting a timer on my own tasks throughout the day too.

A visible timer:

Keeps lessons moving
Reduces off-task behavior
Creates urgency
Improves transitions
Helps maintain pacing

I use timers for almost everything:

Warm-ups
Partner discussions
Station rotations
Notebook setup
Lab cleanup
Exit tickets
Small group work

The visual countdown helps students stay focused and minimizes the constant questions about how much time is left.

Break the Class Period Into Smaller Sections

One mistake I made early on was expecting students to stay engaged in the same activity for too long. Middle school students need movement. They need variety. They need opportunities to interact.

A well-structured class period often feels faster because students are transitioning between different types of learning experiences.

A typical science lesson might look something like this:

Warm-up
Mini lesson
Interactive notebook activity
Partner or group practice
Lab, station activity, or discussion
Exit ticket

When students know a new activity is coming soon, they’re more likely to stay engaged with the current one. Breaking the lesson into smaller chunks offers several benefits:

Keeps engagement high
Reduces behavior issues
Supports different learning styles
Improves attention and focus
Prevents boredom

Interactive Science Notebooks Keep Everything Organized

If you’ve been around here for a while, you already know how much I love interactive science notebooks. They’re one of the best organization systems I’ve ever used.

Instead of managing endless loose papers, students have one central place to store their learning. That means fewer lost assignments, easier review sessions, and significantly fewer “I can’t find it” conversations.

Inside our notebooks, we include things like:

Guided notes
Foldables
Diagrams
Warm-ups
Reflections
Vocabulary activities
Practice questions
Station activities

Students use their notebooks constantly. They reference them during labs, while studying, during review activities, and before assessments.

The notebooks become a personalized science resource that students can use throughout the year.

Why classroom procedures for middle school science have to cover everything

And when I say everything, I mean everything. Seriously.

Your students move through six, seven, or eight classes every day. Every teacher has different expectations, personalities, and routines.

Maybe students can freely get up whenever they want in another class, or chew gum, or sharpen pencils whenever they feel like it.

That doesn’t mean those expectations automatically apply in your classroom.

Your classroom. Your procedures.

The key is teaching those expectations clearly and revisiting them often. Especially after long weekends, holiday breaks, and school vacations.

Some procedures worth teaching include:

Entering class
Sharpening pencils
Getting supplies
Turning in work
Making up absent work
Chromebook expectations
Lab cleanup
Station rotations
Group work expectations
Noise levels
Asking questions
Bathroom procedures

Personally, it drives me crazy when students start sharpening pencils while I’m actively teaching. Because of that, my students know they either ask first or wait until instruction is finished.

The point isn’t that every teacher should have the same rules. The point is that students shouldn’t have to guess.

Positive Reinforcement Matters More Than Constant Correction

It’s easy to spend our energy correcting students. However, I’ve found that recognizing positive behaviors is often much more effective.

Students want attention. When they see classmates being recognized for meeting expectations, they often follow suit.

Positive reinforcement helps:

Build relationships
Strengthen classroom culture
Encourage positive behaviors
Increase student confidence

Middle school students may act like they don’t care what you think, but they absolutely do. A quick positive comment can go a long way.

Organization Systems That Help Me Stay Sane

Sometimes classroom procedures are for teachers as much as the students. Having organized systems reduces stress and saves an incredible amount of time.

Some of my favorite classroom organization tools include:

Color-coded bins
Station tubs
Absent work folders
Weekly LMS updates
Digital assignment organization
Notebook checks
Supply stations

The fewer decisions students have to make, the smoother your classroom will run.

The best classroom procedures for middle school science aren’t complicated. They’re consistent. They’re taught intentionally. And most importantly, they’re practiced repeatedly throughout the year.

Remember, middle school students need structure. They need reminders. They need opportunities to practice routines just like they practice academic skills.

The more clearly you teach expectations, the more time you’ll have for the fun stuff like labs, investigations, discussions, and hands-on science experiences.

So if your classroom feels a little chaotic right now, don’t try to fix everything at once.

Pick one routine. Teach it. Practice it. Refine it. Then move on to the next.

Those small systems add up quickly, and before you know it, you’ll have a classroom that runs more smoothly, feels less stressful, and gives students the freedom to focus on what really matters: learning science.

Stop Just Taking Notes! Reflection and Other Interactive Science Notebook Uses

If you teach middle school science, chances are you already use interactive notebooks in your classroom. They’re lifesavers for keeping students organized and providing a built-in-reference tool throughout the year. But if you’re only using your interactive science notebooks for notes, you’re missing out on one of the most valuable interactive science notebook uses.

What if your interactive science notebooks could do more than just hold notes? What if they could help your students actually understand science, think like scientists, and track their own growth?

Spoiler alert: they can. Reflection is the secret ingredient that turns a notebook into a thinking playground.

Let me show you how to make reflection a regular part of your interactive science notebooks, and watch your students’ learning take off.

Start with a self-rating

Before we start a new unit, I have my middle school students set learning goals, think about what they already know, and then rate themselves from 1-4 on a learning scale. Most of them look at me like, “I don’t know ANY of this” and give themselves a 1. And that’s okay! This sets the stage for all the learning that’s ahead.

Fast forward a few weeks and we revisit this page again. After going through labs, notes, and activities during the unit we’re in, students rate themselves again. They’re almost always shocked at how far they’ve come.

Why reflection belongs in every interactive science notebook

Reflection helps students understand what they're learning, right now.

Have you ever finished a lesson or wrapped up a perfect lab, and then the next day a student looks at you like you’ve never even mentioned this topic to them before? Yeah…same. That’s why reflection saves the day.

Reflection is a built-in pause button for your students. Instead of racing straight to the next activity or copying down another page of notes, it gives students space to stop and process.

This pause matters. Without it, the lesson you just spent so much energy on could easily become a blur. With it, students are more likely to actually own their learning.

Here’s what it could look like:

After a lab, have students write two sentences about the most important thing they learned.
Or, have them sketch! Middle schoolers secretly love to doodle. Asking them to draw what they observed, or illustrate a process we just learned, is another form of reflection that helps solidify content.

Reflection doesn’t have to be long to be effective. Sometimes the quickest prompts lead to the deepest thinking.

Metacognition might be the most powerful skill students never talk about.

When we build reflection into our interactive notebooks, we’re actually helping students develop one of the most valuable skills they’ll ever learn: metacognition. AKA thinking about their own thinking.

Students who reflect regularly start to notice patterns. They’ll realize things like, I always remember concepts better when I make a chart, or reading silently doesn’t help me as much as explaining it out loud. This kind of awareness doesn’t only help them in science, but it helps them in every subject, and honestly in life!

Metacognition also helps with perseverance. When students hit a tricky lab or confusing concept, instead of shutting down, they can think back to what strategies work for them before.

Honestly, this might be one of my favorite interactive science notebook uses because it’s giving students lifelong tools. They’ll probably forget the exact steps of cellular respiration one day (don’t we all?), but if they walk away from your class knowing how they learn best? That will stick forever.

Make Interactive Notebooks Work Smarter (Not Harder)

Middle school brains are busy places. Between soccer practice, TikTok trends, and remembering which friend owes them a pencil, it’s no wonder yesterday’s lesson sometimes vanishes overnight. Reflection gives students a chance to lock in what they learned before it slips away.

When students write something in their own words, or even sketch it, they’re strengthening memory pathways. It’s like telling your brain, hey, this matters! Don’t delete it!

Here are a few of my favorite quick reflection prompts to help boost memory and retention:

What’s one thing from today you could teach to a 5th grader?
Draw a quick sketch that sums up our lab results from today.

These only take a few minutes and help information stick around long after the unit is over. And the best part? When students flip back through their notebooks later in the year, they see their own words and drawings staring back at them. Instant review, no study guide required.

Reflection trains students to use scientific thinking every day.

Ever notice how some students follow instructions perfectly in a lab, but don’t really think about what’s happening? Reflection helps students slow down and notice patterns, ask questions, and actually make sense of the results.

Reflection gives them a chance to practice thinking like a scientist. After a lab, I ask questions like:

What surprised you most about the results?
What would you change if you ran this experiment again?
What new question popped in your head after this activity?

Their answers are always a mix of aha moments and funny misconceptions. But both are useful and help me see what students are noticing, questioning, and understanding. When students reflect this way regularly, they start to approach experiments with curiosity and problem solving in mind.

Reflection Builds Communication That Sticks

Reflection is a sneaky way to get students talking, and writing, about science without even realizing it! Every time they explain what they learned, justify a claim, or summarize a lab in their own words, they’re practicing communication skills.

One simple trick I use: have students answer a reflection prompt like, “Explain this concept to someone who wasn’t in class today.” Some students write a paragraph, while others doodle diagrams, but either way, they’re forced to organize their thinking clearly.

Over time, students start using terms and reasoning more confidently, not only in writing, but in discussions, presentations, and even casual classroom conversations.

Reflection gives you insight into your middle school students' thinking.

Flipping through a student’s interactive notebook is like getting a peek inside their brain. Reflection pages show what students really understand, what confuses them, and where those aha moments happen.

Some of my favorite insights come from the little things:

A student doodling a diagram that shows they almost got it, but forgot one key step. That’s a perfect spot for a quick mini lesson.
Another student writing a paragraph that nails the concept, even if they stumbled on the quiz.
Students admitting what’s still tricky for them. Nothing gets lost in the shuffle. You know exactly what to focus on next.

Based on these reflections, I can adjust my teaching on the fly. Maybe I’ll review a tricky concept with a small group or give extra examples where I see patterns of confusion.

Over time, reading reflections also gives you a front row seat to growth! You see misconceptions turn into correct reasoning and students connecting ideas in ways they couldn’t at the beginning of the year.

Reflection supports your students' growth mindsets

Reflection helps students see learning as a journey, not just a grade on a test. When they track their progress in their notebooks, they notice small wins and growth over time.

Some easy ways to prompt this:

What’s something you understand better now than last week?
What challenge did you overcome in this unit?
What will you try differently next time?

Reading reflections over time shows students that mistakes aren’t failures, they’re stepping stones. And honestly, as teachers, it reminds us too that we are still supporting growth even when the work feels messy or slow. Sometimes the best lesson we model is just that we can do hard things, and so can they.

Interactive science notebooks are already great for organization and accountability, but when you add reflection, you’re giving your students a tool that helps them think about their thinking. It’s like adding rocket fuel to their learning.

Radiation: Place the marshmallow under a heat lamp and watch how the heat travels without ever touching the marshmallow to the lamp!
Convection: Use a steam kettle to cook the marshmallow from the air moving around it. Students can see how warm air transfers thermal energy.
Conduction: Put the marshmallow on a hot plate and observe the direct heat transfer from the surface.

Marshmallows may melt, but the concepts stick, and students leave knowing exactly how heat can travel.

Chill Out with This Cool Thermal Energy Activity

Did you know you can also connect ice cream to thermal energy transfer? This classic lab is always a hit, but the real fun happens when students see the science behind the sweetness. As they make their own ice cream, they get a front row seat to thermal energy in action.

Here’s how we make it happen:

Mix and Shake: Students combine cream, sugar, and vanilla in a small bag and seal it. Then, they place it in a larger bag with ice and rock salt, and shake!
Observe Particle Motion Changes: Ask students to sketch or describe how the particles in the cream change as it freezes.
Connect the Science: Discuss how rock salt lowers the freezing point and why that helps the ice cream thicken faster.
Wrap It Up with CER: Students use a Claim-Evidence-Reasoning template to explain their results in a structured way.

This activity not only satisfies a sweet tooth, but also makes thermal energy transfer tangible, turning a favorite treat into a memorable science lesson.

Quick Thermal Energy Activities that Bring the Heat

Sometimes, you just need a fast, eye-catching activity to grab your middle school students’ attention. That’s where demos come in. Think of demos as that “instant wow” moment that get students noticing patterns and asking questions. They’re the perfect complement to labs and your entire Thermal Energy and Heat unit.

Tiny Drops, Big Lessons

No fancy equipment, no prep headaches, just warm water, cold water, and a swirl of food coloring to bring particle motion to life. Add a few drops of food coloring in warm water and watch it swirl like magic! Then, try the same in cold water and notice how much slower it moves. It’s a simple, visual way to show particle motion and it gets students leaning in without any prep or stress.

Ice Cube Insulation Challenge

Once students have seen thermal energy in motion in water, it’s fun to level it up with ice cubes!

For this next demo, give each group of students an ice cube and challenge them to see how materials impact how fast (or slow!) it melts. Provide your students with a mix of materials like aluminum foil, cotton, plastic wrap, and cardboard. Have them experiment to see which melts fastest or slowest. Through this activity, students get hands-on practice testing insulation and observing thermal energy transfer.

Light Up Your Learning with Glow Sticks

Try literally lighting up thermal energy with glow sticks!

Crack three glow sticks and place one in hot water, one in ice water, and one at room temperature. Students will notice that the hot water stick glows brightest but fades quickly, while the cold one glows dim but lasts longer. This visual demonstration makes particle motion and reaction rates tangible, and adds a bit of magic that keeps students talking.

Interactive Notebooks Make Thermal Energy Concepts Stick

After engaging your students with a lab or demo, give your students a few minutes in their interactive notebooks to turn curiosity into understanding. Interactive notebooks are that simple bridge from hands-on exploration to learning that sticks. This is where your middle school students can slow down, put their observations into words, and start connecting the dots on all the thermal energy activities you just did.

I love using guided notes because they give students a chance to be part of the lesson instead of just observing what’s happening around them. I like to sprinkle in checkpoints and once our notes are complete, they get added to their interactive notebooks as a reference point for later.

I print the activities as a little booklet for each student so they can practice the skills we’ve been exploring. For example, in your interactive notebooks, your students could could:

Use vocabulary in context, making terms like conduction, convection, and radiation stick.
Connect thermal energy to real-world concepts.
Draw diagrams showing how thermal energy flows from one object to another.

By taking just a few minutes to record observations, reflect on a lesson, and practice concepts, students leave with a clear understanding and a notebook they can actually use as a reference later.

A Guide to Why Student Reflection Activities are Important in Middle School

Being able to successfully lead students in reflection is like hitting the lottery in education! Student reflection activities forces students to step back and examine their knowledge and comprehension. At this point, you’ve probably been told to add reflection into your classroom, but why is reflection important and education? And how can you implement reflection in your classroom?

Why are student reflection activities important?

Reflection isn’t a one-hit wonder. It actually has several impactful implications in your classroom.

#1 Reflection requires metacognition.

Reflection requires middle school students to think about their own learning process, what they understood about the lessons, and what they didn’t understand. With this type of thinking, students can take ownership of their learning and become active participants in their own education.

#2 Reflection encourages self-assessment.

As students participate in student reflection activities or student reflection sheets, they gain a deeper understanding of their own growth and progress. This can help shift from focusing on the grade they receive on an assignment to actually seeing their learning as valuable and meaningful.

#3 Reflection encourages ownership of learning.

Once students have tapped into the metacognition necessary for true reflection, they are able to take ownership of their own educational journey. An example of a student reflection activity that encourages ownership is learning progression scales.

#4 Reflection promotes long-term retention.

Instead of just jumping from one unit to the next, encourage students to slow down between topics and reflect. This makes it more likely that students will retain what they learned, plus gives you the chance to find strengths and weaknesses in your previous unit.

#5 Student reflection can lead to meaningful goal setting.

Before any unit, students should assess their knowledge of a topic to see their starting point. Once the unit ends, they can reflect and see how far they’ve come since the beginning. This type of reflection allows students to set goals, work to achieve them, and celebrate their progress! This can be a struggle for middle school students who are already experiencing a lot of changes. Through reflection, students might be able to understand why a unit was really challenging for them – and how it led to feelings of frustration or boredom.

Ultimately, there are many reasons why reflection is important in education. My biggest takeaway is that reflection is a life skill. In those spaces when we reflect on ourselves and our lives, that’s where we grow!

6 Steps to Setting Up Student Interactive Notebooks in Science

Student interactive notebooks have been a total game-changer in my classroom. I have used science interactive notebooks since my first year of teaching, and I swear I learn more and more each school year. Over time, I’ve found ways to make using notebooks better for both me and my students. One essential thing I’ve learned is that how you set up your notebooks can make or break the experience. I want to share how I set up science interactive notebooks with my students so they are successful all year long.

Setting Up Student Interactive Notebooks

#1 Pick Your Notebook Style

My students always made fun of me because I was “anti-spiral notebooks.” I have good reasons, though! Personally, I don’t think spiral notebooks last as long. The stringy paper bits make a mess, and students love to pull out the metal spiral (making the journals an occupational hazard).

If I had to pass off any advice, it would be to stick with composition notebooks. They last longer and are less bulky than the binder option.

However, at the end of the day though, choose what works best for you and your students. Remember to also give students enough time to buy their notebooks. Many don’t go school supply shopping until after the first few days of school.

#2 Make a Day of It

A key to making this whole process successful is to take the time to set up student interactive notebooks. If you try to cram the process into ten minutes or put it together as you dive into content, it won’t work as well. Take my word for it.

Instead, block out a whole class period to set things up correctly.

#3 Create Student Interactive Notebook Covers

I HIGHLY recommend buying shipping labels (affiliate link) to make covers for the science interactive notebooks. You can type and print students’ information onto the sticker or have them stick it onto their notebooks and use a Sharpie to label it.

Personally, I like to put a sticker on the front and the back. This makes it easier to grade and organize the notebooks.

#4 Add a Table of Contents

Another idea for interactive notebooks is to add a table of contents. This should go at the front, and I recommend leaving a few empty pages. You can create a table of contents template for students to glue in or model how to create one.

Either way, show students how to use a table of content. This helps keep the students organized and able to find their notes and activities later.

#5 Create Divers for the Notebook

Next, decide how students will divide their student interactive notebooks. You can divide it by unit (this is how I like to do it) or by activity, like vocabulary, notes, warm ups, and more. Then, create table or divider pages students can glue in.

You also want to make sure the entire class is dividing their notebook the same this. This makes it easy to model how students should set up their notebooks, plus will make it easy for you to find items you want to grade.

#6 Add an Assessment Tracker

Lastly, science interactive notebooks don’t have to be just for content material. You can also use them for other class-related items. I like to add assessment trackers to the back of my students’ notebooks. Then, throughout the year, students track their grades and have a quick, visual way to monitor their progress.

I’m Changing How I Use Interactive Notebooks in Science

Throughout the years, I’ve been refining how I use interactive notebooks for science. Each year I learn something new about how to make them even more engaging and useful for my students. I think interactive notebooks can be really impactful for students, but they can also quickly get messy and disorganized. Luckily, I’ve learned from those mistakes in the past!

Here’s how I will be using interactive notebooks going forward –

How to Use Interactive Notebooks for Science

#1 Use a Table of Contents

Here’s the truth: If you don’t use a table of contents, kids will blindly paste things anywhere they can just to get it in before you do a notebook check. This means they end up an a notebook that is far from useful. To solve this problem in the future, my students will be required to have a table of content in their science interactive notebooks.

#2 Add Opportunities for Reflection

A lot of times, we get busy moving from one unit to the next because there is a lot to cover. However, students need to stop and reflect.

I plan on adding some reflection pages into my student’s interactive notebooks for science. In this space, I can assess their knowledge and understanding of the current and previous unit. This will not only help them see their own growth but also help me see what areas need to be reviewed.

#3 Divide Up the Units

To make science interactive notebooks less chaotic, units need to be clearly divided. Kind of like a table of content, the more intertwined everything is – the harder it is to find material later. With well-organized science interactive notebooks, students can easily search for what they need without flipping through each page. That’ll make things easier for all of us!

#4 Teach Students How to Glue…Seriously!

You may laugh at me for this one, but my students really go crazy with glue. I often have to say “a dot is a lot” because students will smear glue everywhere. It makes a mess, leaves their notebook gooey, and takes forever to dry. Some students use so much glue that I can’t even open their notebooks. In the future, we will have quarterly lessons on this to remind them how to glue. I am not even kidding!

#5 Track Student Progress

Having students include progress tracking in their science interactive notebooks is a great way to keep them accountable for their learning. The data trackers help students see their strengths, weaknesses, and overall progress. There needs to be lots of conversation around these charts (like letting them know it’s not to shame them), but I think it’s really useful for students to see.

#6 Use Templates

To make things easier on myself in the future, I plan on using more templates for science interactive notebooks. Not every lab or demonstration needs its own special lab or write up. I created a general lab template, a general claim, evidence, reasoning (CER) template, and a predict, observe, explain (POE) template that helps with this! These templates work for labs, demos, videos and more. In fact, I made a bundle with all of my no-prep, simple Science Templates.

How to Make Whole Group Google Slides Science Activities Engaging

Sometimes I hear educators pushing back against whole group instruction. Some people believe it doesn’t benefit our students, and it’s not engaging. But in my eyes, there is a time and a place for whole group instruction in the science classroom! You don’t have to put together elaborate labs or stations to have fun with science activities.

During whole group instruction, I am a big fan of using Google Slides, but that doesn’t mean simply lecturing at the board. I want to share some of my favorite ways to make whole group science lessons engaging, so you can have fun with science activities – no matter the format!

#1 Include Students in the Instruction

You might be thinking, “Well, duh, I should include my students.” But I don’t mean just asking them to answer questions. I mean really getting students involved in the whole group instruction.

Make it a requirement that students be active participants by requiring that they write their answers down on a whiteboard or piece of paper. Then, select students at random to come up with the board where your Google Slide is displayed and have them answer or solve for the class.

If they get stuck, let them “phone a friend” and get help from another student. This isn’t about embarrassing or punishing students but rather getting them engaged in the lesson!

#2 White Board Games

Another way to have fun with science activities and whole group instruction is by using whiteboards. Have students answer quick questions as you go through the Google Slide, and then raise their board so you can check for understanding.

You can also have students draw a visual representation of a concept or answer a quick vocabulary check. Have fun with it! Not every question has to be super serious but can keep students alert and engaged.

#3 Create a Review Game

What better way to have fun with science activities than to make it a game? Turn your Google Slides into an interactive challenge, such as playing trashketball, trivia, or Jeopardy.

There are a couple ways you can do this. First, you can tell students that you will be playing a team game at the end of the lesson and ask them to take notes during whole group. Then, they can use these notes during the game!

Second, you can actually repurpose your Google Slides into a game by taking the content and questions from the slides and using them in a new way.

Why You Should Use Interactive Notebooks in Science Class

Whether you have been teaching science for a year or ten years, chances are you have heard of science interactive notebooks. But, if you have never used interactive notebooks in your middle school classroom, here are my top 4 reasons you should use them in your classroom this year.

Interactive Notebooks Keep Students Organized

My students use their interactive notebooks for EVERY assignment in my classroom. If it needs to be turned in, it goes in their notebook. Guided notes, worksheet activities, lab reports, project rubrics, answer sheets, it ALL goes in their notebooks. This means there are no more loose papers that get left in desks or on the floor. No more assignments lost in the bottom of their backpack.

By having students put every assignment in their science notebook, students stay more organized. They have everything they need when it’s time to turn an assignment in. Using interactive notebooks also means not having messy turn in bins for daily assignments. With paper assignments, as students turn them in, the turn in bins become a disaster. By the end of the day, you have messy piles of papers to sift through before you can start grading them. Having interactive notebooks prevents this from happening.

Science Notebooks Can Be Used as a Reference

Throughout the year, students will put every assignment for each unit in their interactive notebook. This allows students to have a quick and easy place to use as a reference guide. They can use their notebooks to review for tests or quizzes, revisit concepts they were confused by, or prepare for end of year exams. Many of my students have kept their science notebooks at the end of the year and used them as a reference for upper-level courses. Since science concepts build on teach other, they were able to use their interactive notebooks to help them review basic concepts in biology, chemistry and physics. I’ve had several students tell me how helpful their science notebooks were for years to come.

Interactive Notebooks Support Differentiation

While it may seem like putting every assignment into a notebook would limit the type of activity you can complete, I have found that using interactive notebooks actually helps me to differentiate the type of activities I do in my classroom. I have used science notebooks for so many different activities. Lab reports, graphic organizers, task cards, rubrics and even escape room activities can all go into interactive notebooks. If an activity has a written or visual component to it, it can be added to an interactive notebook.

Science Notebooks are Perfect for Assessment Portfolios

Interactive notebooks make data collection so much easier. When students put all their work in one place, you can easily use it for data collection throughout the year. When I hold a parent teacher conference, I always bring the student’s notebook to show parents exactly what their student is working on. This gives parents concrete examples of what their student is learning and doing in your classroom.

Another way I use interactive notebooks for data collection is to include assessment trackers and reflection pages in students’ notebooks. I have students reflect on their understanding of each unit. This allows me to gather informal data on how the student feel about the current concepts. I use this information to helps me to know what concepts students need more review time on.

You can also use student work samples from your students’ science notebooks as part of your end of the year teacher evaluation. Administration can easily see samples of student work and a progression of skills through the school year. I always keep a few of my students’ interactive notebooks to show to administration at the end of the year.

Bonus -Interactive notebooks make great student samples

At the end of the school year, I ask one of my students if I can keep their interactive notebook. By having a copy of a student’s science notebook, I can use it as a guide for future lesson planning. I use the student sample to help me remember what worked well and what didn’t. It also use it as a student model for the next school year. If my students complete an activity that benefits from having a sample, I can show them a previous student’s assignment instead of creating it myself.

5 Google Slides Ideas for Your Science Classroom

By now, you’ve probably heard of the magical powers of Google Slides! They are collaborative and simple presentation slides that put PowerPoint to shame. And the best part? You can use Google Slides for way more than classroom presentations. In fact, I want to share five Google Slide ideas that you will wish you thought of sooner.

Online Stations

Tired of all the prep that comes with preparing stations? Try out digital stations.

To set up my digital stations, I typically have one slide for each activity. The slide deck typically has between six and eight slides, and I aim to have each slide take about 10 minutes to complete.

For example, my Thermal Energy and Heat activities have six activities total. In one station, they look at a density image and answer critical thinking questions. In another station, they get a description of an object and must calculate the density.

Digital Interactive Notebooks

Say goodbye to the composition notebook and hello to the digital world! This Google Slide idea will eliminate the cutting, gluing, and wasting time that comes with notebooks.

They can add these slides to a growing Google Slide deck to create one big notebook. Or, they can have a notebook for each unit. Either way, I’ve found students can refer to their notes much easier when they are digital due to search features!

Independent Activities and Homework

Get rid of stacks of paper to grade (or the age old, “My dog ate my homework!”) with this Google Slide idea. All you have to do is assign the activity, and you are done!

By using Google Slides for your activities, you can better monitor students’ activity, quickly check to see what assignments have been completed, and simplify grading. It also makes providing feedback to students a breeze.

Collaborative Activities

Not all my Google Slide ideas are 1:1. Afterall, it is a presentation application! You can make Google Slide activities interactive by projecting them and working through it as a class.

This can be a part of your mini-lesson as you are gradually releasing students to work alone, or you can team students up and play a game where they answer questions on the slides.

I often use the same activities from my digital science stations for these collaborative activities.

Enrichment

One of my favorite Google Slides ideas is using it as enrichment or for students who complete assignments early. In the past, I would be scrambling to come up with something for students to do if they finished early, but now I have digital slides ready just for these students.

When I am putting together a unit for my students, I always have an extra Google Slide deck or two that I put in a folder called enrichment. If students have extra time, I direct them there. Sometimes the assignment is a digital science station and other times I’ll include a digital science lab for the unit. You can also review past content!

Using A Learning Progression Scale with Interactive Notebooks

Interactive notebooks are one of my absolute favorite things to incorporate into my classroom! I start them in the beginning of the year and we use them throughout the school year. Every. Single. Day. My students know when they walk into the room, they need to grab their folder and their notebook. Not only do we use our notebooks for organization but we also use them for tracking growth throughout the year with learning progression scales!

What is a learning progression scale?

A learning progression scale sets targets for proficiency levels within a unit. They range from 1-4 with a 1 being the lowest level and 4 being the highest. They lay out the skills and goals for students to master learning targets.

Reasons for adding these accessories to your interactive notebook:

Makes standards, objectives and goals easy to reference at any time.
Actively requires students to think about what they already know and do not know.
Promotes reflection and accountability.

Having Learning Goals Accessible for Students

We all know that we are supposed to have our learning goals written on our board or presented on a wall somewhere in our classroom for our students to see but what about when students aren’t in our classroom? What if they are struggling on an assignment and aren’t quite sure what it is they need to know or demonstrate? By having students include a learning progression scale in their interactive notebooks, they can use this as a guide and track their learning. We refer to it often in the classroom throughout a unit.

Right before we begin a new lesson, I have my students complete the learning progression scale with me or I give them a copy of one they can glue into their notebooks. I review the learning goals with them as a class and we go over the levels of progression. A student would rate themselves as a 1 if the material is brand new to them and a 4 if they consider themselves an expert. Think about the kid who can basically teach the class type of expert. Each level is described for them so they know how to appropriately label themselves. After selecting a rating, they explain why they rate themselves that way.

My aim is to get all students to a 3. That’s how I know they are proficient in the material.

Reflections on Learning

So you have taught the lessons, assigned the supplementary resources, completed the projects, given the assessment, etc. Now what? It doesn’t end there… Now it is time to reflect! We go back to that learning progression scale and rate ourselves again with the same 1-4 scale. Once again, students will explain why they rated themselves this way.

You can take it a step further and have students complete these reflections with you in a student-teacher conference setting while discussing assessment scores. The student can explain their strengths in the topic as well as weaknesses. This helps not only the student understand where they may need extra help but it is also valuable feedback for you as a teacher!

Tracking Assessment Data

An assessment tracker that students can have in their notebooks and update frequently is a quick and easy tool that helps our middle school students hold themselves more accountable for their learning. I usually dedicate the very last page of the notebook to this tracker. They can track pre and post assessment data on it to see their growth throughout the school year. Best part? It takes only a minute or so to fill out for students once they have gotten their grades back.

I truly believe that by laying out exactly what students need to know and teaching them to reflect on their learning really makes it more meaningful to them. This is what makes the knowledge stick!
