Every year around this time, I’d catch myself thinking, “Wait…didn’t we just start the school year?” And then somehow, April would pop up like a jump scare.

Between labs, assemblies, fire drills, rescheduled field trips, and whatever else middle school throws into the mix, finding time for test prep felt  nearly impossible. I remember staring at my planner wondering how I was supposed to fit one more thing into a schedule that was already bursting at the seams. 

But then I realized, you don’t need a huge overhaul to help your middle school students feel ready for standardized tests. By weaving in tiny review moments now, everything feels lighter later. A little bit of standardized test review sprinkled throughout your week can make a big difference, without overwhelming you or your students. 

Let’s take a look at a few simple, low-prep ways to get ahead before testing season sneaks up on you this year.

Standardized test review made simple for middle school science

Start small with daily warm-ups and exit tickets

You don’t need a brand new unit or a giant packet to start reviewing. Just tuck it into routines you already have! 

Try dropping in a spiral review warm-up a few times a week that revisits concepts students haven’t seen in awhile. If you’re in the middle of your cells unit, toss in a quick question about plate tectonics as a warm up. Those tiny retrieval moments help reinforce old content without stealing class time.

Exit tickets are another great way to review and collect quick data. If half your class misses a weathering or erosion question, that’s your sign to circle back with a mini review next week. Short, simple, and effective.

Use review stations students will love

If your middle schoolers hear the word “review” and immediately groan, it’s time to switch things up. If you haven’t yet, try stations! Stations provide movement and variety to help keep your students engaged while learning or reviewing. 

Set up 5-6 short stations around the room. A few examples: 

  • Task card station with mixed review questions
  • Vocabulary match up station using terms, definitions, and diagrams
  • Mini lab review with a quick demo 
  • Draw it station where students sketch a labeled diagram like the water cycle or a cell 
  • Quick write explaining a concept or cycle 

Because students rotate every few minutes, they stay engaged while hitting multiple standards without feeling like they’re stuck in a test prep loop.

Make Every Season a Science Adventure

Find weak spots early with targeted mini-checks

Don’t wait until March to find out what your students don’t remember! Short, low-pressure checkpoints can give you valuable insight long before crunch time.

Try a weekly mini-check with 5-6 mixed standard questions. Instead of stressing about scores, look for patterns. Which standards are missed by a majority of the group? That’s where you can plan a warm-up spiral, a small group reteach, or a station for the following week. 

This quick diagnostic approach keeps everything student-centered while helping you stay proactive instead of reactive.

Make standardized test review fun with games!

Test prep doesn’t have to be silent, serious, or worksheet-heavy. Bring the energy back into your classroom with a few tried-and-true favorite test-prep review games: 

  • Science review bingo using task card questions
  • Team Kahoot! battles to review vocabulary or processes
  • Escape room challenges ties to key standards
  • Jeopardy review day 

Middle schoolers love a little competition, and that engagement goes a long way when reviewing complex concepts.

Keep the focus on confidence, not just content

We all know standardized tests can be nerve-wracking, especially for students who deal with test anxiety. One of the most supportive things you can do is help them trust what they already know. 

A few easy confidence boosters: 

  • Celebrate the small wins.
  • Practice test-taking strategies together like reading graphs, eliminating answers, and pacing. 
  • Model positive talk: “We’ve worked on these skills all year! Now’s your time to shine.” 

Students perform better when they feel capable, not just when they’ve memorized the content. 

Bringing standardized test review into your routine

By starting early and keeping review short and engaging, you’ll save yourself the April panic and help your students truly master tricky science standards. 

You don’t need cram sessions or endless packets or worksheets. You just need a plan that spirals old concepts into fun, meaningful ways your students will actually enjoy.

Spring is here, which means warmer weather, restless students, and—like it or not—testing season right around the corner. The pressure to review everything before the big day is setting in. ​​You could hand out another giant packet of practice questions…but let’s be honest, no one (including you) wants that.

The good news? Test prep doesn’t have to be boring or stressful. In fact, the more interactive and engaging your review strategies are, the more likely students are to retain the information they need. That’s why I’ve teamed up with a group of amazing science teachers to share our favorite ways to make test prep both fun and effective.

From hands-on activities to creative review techniques, we’ve got six engaging strategies that will help your students feel confident and prepared without the burnout.

Test Prep Strategy #1: Use Stations to Review Multiple Topics in 1 Class Period

Use stations to review multiple topics in one science class.

Stations make review feel more like an engaging activity rather than a stressful test prep session. Plus, they allow me to quickly gauge where students feel confident and where they need more support before test day. 

If you haven’t tried stations for review, this is your sign to give them a shot! Here’s why they work so well: 

  • Make the Most of Class Time – stations allow you to cover multiple topics in a single class period, which helps you make the most of your limited time. 
  • Cater to Different Learning Styles – By offering a variety of activities (mini-experiments, vocabulary sorting, problem-solving tasks), stations meet the needs of all students, no matter their preferred learning style.
  • Promote Movement and Engagement – Instead of sitting through a lecture, students rotate through stations, keeping them active and engaged throughout the lesson.
  • Informal Assessment and Feedback – Stations provide a great opportunity to assess student understanding. Teachers can see where students are excelling or need more support, and adjust accordingly.

Test Prep Strategy #2: Start with a Pretest

Laney from Laney Lee Science recommends a pretest as one of the most valuable tools for test prep in secondary science. Pretests set students up for effective, targeted studying.

A pretest, often given at the start of a unit or study period, serves as a preview of what students know and what areas need more attention. It’s a no-pressure way for students to gauge their strengths and identify gaps in their knowledge early on, helping them focus their efforts on specific topics rather than cramming everything.

Pretests can also boost confidence by showing students what they already understand. Seeing familiar concepts can reassure students that they’ve got a solid foundation, making the learning process feel more manageable. It’s a simple, effective strategy that can make a big difference in science test prep!

7 Review Games to Make Standardized Testing More Fun

Test Prep Strategy #3: Use Review Games

Ana, from Science Is Real, knows that test prep doesn’t have to feel like a chore. Her blog highlights the power of science review games to transform test preparation into an engaging and interactive experience. 

By using review games that encourage collaboration and problem-solving, students can connect with the material in meaningful ways while catering to different learning styles, including visual, hands-on, and auditory.

Test Prep Strategy #4: Try Double Puzzles

“Assessment is fun,” said no student ever! But Heather from Science from the South says it can be! And what better way than an assessment to help students prepare for their upcoming test?

Using double puzzles for assessment and review is a perfect way to get students engaged in test prep while showing you, as the teacher, what they remember and what you may need to remediate.  

What exactly are double puzzles? Double puzzles are puzzles with two parts. If you and your students are fans of word searches, crosswords, and such for formative assessment, you’ll like double puzzles, too! You can think of them as a puzzle with double the fun! 

First, students answer questions about a concept. Then, the answers to those questions give students clues to solve a second puzzle.

Test Prep Strategy #5: Have Students Make Their Own Questions

One simple (and No-Prep!) way Jessica at Teach Every Day helps her students prepare for a test, is by having them create their own test questions from their notes. It’s a great research based method that not only helps with studying but also deepens students’ understanding of the material.

Here’s how it works: Have students go through their notes and pick out key concepts, terms, and ideas that are important. Then, they turn those into different types of questions—multiple choice, true/false, or short answer—anything that mirrors the format of your test. This way, they actively engage with the material and test themselves as they go.

Once they’ve made their questions, students can quiz each other in pairs or small groups, exchanging their questions for a fun study session. It also gives them the chance to see where they might be shaky on certain topics. 

As a bonus, you could ask students to hand in their best questions. You can even use a few of the most creative and accurate ones for the actual test! It’s a win-win: students get a personalized study tool, and you get some fresh test questions.

Test Prep Strategy #6: Use Doodle Notes

You have probably heard of Doodle Notes – these are popular with teachers as an alternative to traditional note-taking.

But did you know that many teachers also use them as a review?

Emma from Emma the Teachie is one of them! She thinks Doodle Notes are a brilliant way to prepare students for EOC tests. Here are her tips for using them.

First, decide how much time you have for each unit.

If you have lots of time, then let students get creative. Give them a blank set of Doodle Notes and allow them to fill in as much as they can. In the last 10-15 minutes, present the answer key slides, so students can check and complete their notes fully.

If you are tight on time, you may wish to use scaffolded Doodle Notes. These have fill-in-the-blanks for students, so it is a faster way to check understanding.

Next, let’s put those Doodle Notes to use. Get students to pair up and take turns questioning each other using their completed notes. The student being questioned can’t peek at their notes!

Finally, send the notes home. Completed Doodle Notes serve as an amazing study guide for students. You’ll be surprised at how many students turn up on the day of the test with their Doodle Notes on hand as a last minute reference.

A holiday is a great excuse to mix things up in your classroom. It’s a great way to take an exciting lesson or topic more interesting for your students because holidays always feel like a special day. St Patrick’s Day is no exception. There are tons of fun ways to add a little bit of festivity to your old science curriculum with these St. Patrick’s Day middle school science activities while still aligning to your standards.

Studying Light and Making Rainbows

Rainbows are one of those things associated with St. Patrick’s Day so you can make a lesson all about rainbows and how they work! Discuss how rainbows form after a rainy day. Play with prisms and review refraction. Another fun thing I like to do with my students to review light is to show them how white light can be broken up into individual colors. If you have a set of diffraction prism glasses like this in your classroom, you can have your students put them on and look up at the light in your classroom to see how it works. It’s so simple but it gets students excited when they see the rainbows!

Leprechaun Trap STEM

A holiday is always a good day to switch up your usual instruction with a STEM challenge. Have students build a leprechaun trap using simple machines. Provide students with recyclable supplies such as bottles and cardboard. Then, supplement with things like popsicle sticks, rubber bands, paper clips, etc. Group students and give them a time limit to complete the challenge. After completing, make it a competition to see who has the most effective trap!

Leprechaun Genetics

Discuss genetic variation and Punnett squares by having students roll dice to represent different phenotypes of leprechauns. These features can include a long beard, short beard, eye color, shoe size, height, etc. Once students have created their Punnett squares, have them draw their leprechaun and display them as St. Patrick’s day décor!

Build a Simple Potato Battery. 

You can create these batteries and then discuss with your students how they can work to power small things like an LED clock. They work by harnessing chemical energy stored in the potato to transform into electrical energy. When materials link copper and zinc are inserted into the potato, the chemical reaction can occur to produce the electrical energy.

Green Energy

Green is the color of St. Patrick’s Day, right? Why not make the day all about “keeping it green” and talking about renewable energy, keeping the planet clean, etc. Infuse some of those human impact standards when you do this. Have students explore renewable energy sources such as solar panels, wind turbines, hydroelectric dams, etc. You can even have students debate with one another to see which renewable energy source would work best in the community you live in.

St. Patrick’s Day Science Stations

If you want to review a bunch of standards in a day with mini activities, stations are the answer. These St. Patrick’s Day stations are the ultimate way to review a lot of content in a single class period. These stations review Earth/Space, Life Science and Physical Science standards. Topics include density, light waves, periodic table, ecology, genetics, photosynthesis, plate tectonics and more! These are great for getting into standardized testing season and reviewing previously taught content. I love using these types of stations with other fun review activities.
