Reclaim Your Summer: 5 Tips for Avoiding Teacher Burnout

Avoiding teacher burnout can be a challenge. Some school years hit harder than others, and no, it’s not just you. Even the teacher down the hall who seems like she has it all together? She feels it too. Burnout doesn’t discriminate, and a couple of weeks off won’t magically undo a tough year.

Whether you just wrapped up your first year or your fifteenth, it’s totally normal to feel a little (or a lot!) like a used up Expo marker right now.

So let’s ditch the guilt, silence the Sunday Scaries, and reclaim your time. Here are five ways to rest, recharge, and remind yourself of the version of you that exists beyond the classroom this summer.

Not Quite on Break Yet? This Will Help You Get There

Give yourself a breather and keep students engaged with science activities that reviews key concepts and channels that end-of-year energy — no extra prep required.

Grab the End of the Year Summer Science Stations

1. Say No to Summer Emails and Yes to Avoiding Teacher Burnout

Just because your principal asks if you want to keep your school laptop for the summer, doesn’t mean you have to. Don’t feel pressured to keep grinding to prove you’re a “dedicated teacher.” A dedicated teacher takes time for themself too.

Here’s how to unplug without disconnecting completely:

Return your school laptop. If it feels freeing, go for it. No shame in giving yourself space.
Temporarily delete school apps from your phone. Out of sight, out of mind!
Set a work window. If you want to prep, pick one day or a couple hours a week to work on school things. Boundaries are your friend.
Mute your school email. Try turning off your notifications or muting them for certain time periods to give yourself a break.

Remember, rest isn’t a reward. It’s part of the job.

2. Rediscover what Made you Fall in Love with Science

You didn’t become a science teacher because you had to. You did it because you love curiosity and discovery, right?

This summer, try to fall in love with science again.

Let yourself get nerdy again. Visit a planetarium, an aquarium, a science museum. Take your own kids, your niece or nephew, or your teacher bestie! Let yourself wander around and geek out like your middle school self would’ve.

No standards. No tests. Just the joy of learning something new for yourself.

3. Reclaim the You behind the Teacher Badge

You are more than the classroom. Being a teacher is just one part of your identity. Summer is your reminder to rediscover the “you” that sometimes gets buried under lesson plans and late-night grading.

Think of this as your chance to hit refresh.

Revisit old hobbies you haven’t tried since before back-to-school night.
Try a new activity just for fun!
Reconnect with your people. Schedule brunch, book club, or even just a long overdue phone call.
Schedule quiet time with no agenda. A peaceful afternoon with no students, no bells, no noise? Perfect.

4. Practice Actual Self Care (Not the kind from Staff PD)

You’ve heard the word self-care tossed around so much it might make you roll your eyes a little, especially when it comes from a slideshow at a staff meeting. And summer is the perfect time to practice giving your nervous system a break.

You’ve poured so much into your students all year long, now it’s your turn to fill your own cup too!

Self-care can look a lot of different ways, so think about what feels good and doable for you right now! Here are a few of my favorite ideas:

Sleep in. Seriously. Let yourself rest without guilt.
Move your body! Whether it’s a walk, a dance class, or chasing your dog around the yard, find something that feels fun.
Eat lunch sitting down. What a concept, right?
Do something creative. Paint, bake, garden, or journal!
Say no. Protect your time and energy. You don’t have to do everything this summer.

More than anything, give yourself permission to be a human before you’re a teacher. You earned this break. So take it!

5. Reflect From this Year While It’s Still Fresh

There’s something magical about a quiet morning of summer break. You wake up without an alarm, pour a cup of coffee that doesn’t go cold on your desk, and your mind finally has a little room to breathe.

On one of these mornings, you may find that’s when the memories start to trickle in. The student who finally nailed a tough concept, the lab that had your whole class buzzing, the unexpected laugh that got you through a hard day.

You don’t need to plan your entire next school year right now, but a little reflection while it’s all still fresh can be a gift to your future self.

Try thinking through these prompts with your coffee:

3 things that went well. What were your favorite wins this year? What would you love to do again?
2 things you’d change. Think of these as gentle notes for improvement, not failures.
1 surprise success. What worked better than expected?

This reflection activity is about celebrating your growth and holding onto the moments that mattered.

You’ve made it through another year of shaping minds and sparking curiosity. That’s no small thing. Let this summer be the season where you pause, reflect, and feel proud of the work you did this year.

Teaching is seasonal.

This season? It’s for you.

Being a teacher means living in seasons – some full of momentum, others full of rest and renewal. This summer? Let it be the latter and focus on avoiding teacher burnout.

You don’t have to plan your comeback yet. You don’t have to have it all figured out.

You just have to show up for yourself the way you show up for your students. With care, compassion, and grace.

Take the time. Reclaim your energy. And know that when next year rolls around, you’ll be ready. Rested and rooted in who you are, not just what you do.

6 Fun and Effective Test Prep Strategies for Secondary Science

Spring is here, which means warmer weather, restless students, and—like it or not—testing season right around the corner. The pressure to review everything before the big day is setting in. You could hand out another giant packet of practice questions…but let’s be honest, no one (including you) wants that.

The good news? Test prep doesn’t have to be boring or stressful. In fact, the more interactive and engaging your review strategies are, the more likely students are to retain the information they need. That’s why I’ve teamed up with a group of amazing science teachers to share our favorite ways to make test prep both fun and effective.

From hands-on activities to creative review techniques, we’ve got six engaging strategies that will help your students feel confident and prepared without the burnout.

Test Prep Strategy #1: Use Stations to Review Multiple Topics in 1 Class Period

Stations make review feel more like an engaging activity rather than a stressful test prep session. Plus, they allow me to quickly gauge where students feel confident and where they need more support before test day.

If you haven’t tried stations for review, this is your sign to give them a shot! Here’s why they work so well:

Make the Most of Class Time – stations allow you to cover multiple topics in a single class period, which helps you make the most of your limited time.

Cater to Different Learning Styles – By offering a variety of activities (mini-experiments, vocabulary sorting, problem-solving tasks), stations meet the needs of all students, no matter their preferred learning style.

Promote Movement and Engagement – Instead of sitting through a lecture, students rotate through stations, keeping them active and engaged throughout the lesson.
Informal Assessment and Feedback – Stations provide a great opportunity to assess student understanding. Teachers can see where students are excelling or need more support, and adjust accordingly.

Test Prep Strategy #2: Start with a Pretest

Laney from Laney Lee Science recommends a pretest as one of the most valuable tools for test prep in secondary science. Pretests set students up for effective, targeted studying.

A pretest, often given at the start of a unit or study period, serves as a preview of what students know and what areas need more attention. It’s a no-pressure way for students to gauge their strengths and identify gaps in their knowledge early on, helping them focus their efforts on specific topics rather than cramming everything.

Pretests can also boost confidence by showing students what they already understand. Seeing familiar concepts can reassure students that they’ve got a solid foundation, making the learning process feel more manageable. Plus, pretests provide teachers with useful insights, highlighting areas that might need a quick review or reteaching before diving into more complex material.

By encouraging students to treat the pretest as a learning tool, you’re helping them take an active role in their study process. The pretest becomes a roadmap for success, guiding students to prioritize the topics that will help them the most on test day. It’s a simple, effective strategy that can make a big difference in science test prep!

Test Prep Strategy #3: Use Review Games

Ana, from Science Is Real, knows that test prep doesn’t have to feel like a chore. Her blog highlights the power of science review games to transform test preparation into an engaging and interactive experience.

By using review games that encourage collaboration and problem-solving, students can connect with the material in meaningful ways while catering to different learning styles, including visual, hands-on, and auditory.

From fun printable board games to interactive online games, science review games foster collaboration and critical thinking. As students work together to answer questions, they engage in peer-to-peer learning, reinforcing key concepts and building confidence along the way.

Test Prep Strategy #4: Try Double Puzzles

“Assessment is fun,” said no student ever! But Heather from Science from the South says it can be! And what better way than an assessment to help students prepare for their upcoming test?

Using double puzzles for assessment and review is a perfect way to get students engaged in test prep while showing you, as the teacher, what they remember and what you may need to remediate.

What exactly are double puzzles? Double puzzles are puzzles with two parts. If you and your students are fans of word searches, crosswords, and such for formative assessment, you’ll like double puzzles, too! You can think of them as a puzzle with double the fun!

First, students answer questions about a concept. Then, the answers to those questions give students clues to solve a second puzzle.

As a result, this formative assessment idea allows students to practice using the information learned about any big idea or science standard just in time for test-prep season. Learn how Double Puzzle Worksheets Make Formative Assessment Fun here.

Test Prep Strategy #5: Have Students Make Their Own Questions

One simple (and No-Prep!) way Jessica at Teach Every Day helps her students prepare for a test, is by having them create their own test questions from their notes. It’s a great research based method that not only helps with studying but also deepens students’ understanding of the material.

Here’s how it works: Have students go through their notes and pick out key concepts, terms, and ideas that are important. Then, they turn those into different types of questions—multiple choice, true/false, or short answer—anything that mirrors the format of your test. This way, they actively engage with the material and test themselves as they go.

Once they’ve made their questions, students can quiz each other in pairs or small groups, exchanging their questions for a fun study session. It also gives them the chance to see where they might be shaky on certain topics.

As a bonus, you could ask students to hand in their best questions. You can even use a few of the most creative and accurate ones for the actual test! It’s a win-win: students get a personalized study tool, and you get some fresh test questions.

Test Prep Strategy #6: Use Doodle Notes

You have probably heard of Doodle Notes – these are popular with teachers as an alternative to traditional note-taking.

But did you know that many teachers also use them as a review?

Emma from Emma the Teachie is one of them! She thinks Doodle Notes are a brilliant way to prepare students for EOC tests. Here are her tips for using them.

First, decide how much time you have for each unit.

If you have lots of time, then let students get creative. Give them a blank set of Doodle Notes and allow them to fill in as much as they can. In the last 10-15 minutes, present the answer key slides, so students can check and complete their notes fully.

If you are tight on time, you may wish to use scaffolded Doodle Notes. These have fill-in-the-blanks for students, so it is a faster way to check understanding.

Next, let’s put those Doodle Notes to use. Get students to pair up and take turns questioning each other using their completed notes. The student being questioned can’t peek at their notes!

Finally, send the notes home. Completed Doodle Notes serve as an amazing study guide for students. You’ll be surprised at how many students turn up on the day of the test with their Doodle Notes on hand as a last minute reference.

Activities For the End of the Year in Your Marine Science Class

As the school year wraps up and all the testing chaos ends, you may be thinking “what can I do for the rest of the school year?” “How can I keep my students engaged?” Well, I believe the end of the year in marine science is all about having some fun while still keeping the activities content-focused. Here are some of my favorite ways to wrap up the end of the year in marine science.

Did you Miss Anything?

This one may be simple but just looking at your pacing guide and curriculum map can be really helpful here. What are some of those big projects or labs that you put off because you didn’t have enough time earlier in the year? The end of the year is the perfect time to revisit those activities.

Contributions to Marine Science Project

This is a fun project that I usually like to assign at the beginning of the year but I have done it at the end of the year as well. The Contributions to Marine Science Project is a research project that allows students to learn more about inventions and technologies that have made the lives of marine scientists easier and advanced research. The students get assigned a contribution (or you can let them choose) from a list. Once they have theirs chosen, they begin to do research about it. What does it do? What does it look like? Who uses it? How does it help marine scientists?

Once they have their background knowledge about the invention, they take on a marketing role. Their job is to pretend they are on the marketing team for this invention or advancement. They must design an advertisement for their contribution that shows what it is capable of and convince others why it’s so helpful. If you want to take things up a notch, you can add a Shark Tank twist. Have your students present their advertisements as if they are on the show. This always made it a bit more fun!

Plastic Pollution and the Coral Reef PBL

This is an excellent long-term project for marine science. It covers coral reefs, biodiversity, ecology and the impact of plastic pollution on coral reefs. It reviews many of the concepts you have gone over throughout the year and ties it all together. You can learn more about the project here or grab the resource for the project here. You will need about 2-3 weeks to complete this PBL, making it perfect for the end of the year.

Here is the quick summary of the project plan:

1. Introducing the project. This really sets the tone for the unit and keeps students on track with a goal in mind. I like to write the question (How does plastic pollution affect the biodiversity of life on coral reefs?) on the board and come back to it throughout the project.

2. Create a sketch. Have students create a sketch of what they think a healthy, biodiverse coral reef looks like. They can apply what they know about coral reefs here.

3. Research. Students will begin researching the coral reef and the current state of things. This can be done individually, with a partner, or even in small groups depending on your class size and dynamics.

4. Create a new sketch. After researching, have students create another sketch that represents the “true” state of coral reefs based on what they learned.

5. Create a PSA. Now that students know why coral reefs are important and what is happening with coral reefs – they can inform others! Put students into groups to create a PSA about biodiversity and how plastic pollution has affected coral reefs.

6. Create an Action Plan. Finally, have students create an action plan that gets the school or community involved in efforts to reduce the plastic in the oceans. Their action plan will focus on why coral reefs are important and what the average citizen can do to help.

Polynesian Nautical Stick Charts

This is a fun project that ties in the history of marine science and early map making. Ancient Polynesians made their maps out of sea shells, sticks and other natural materials to create personalized maps that helped them with seafaring. With this Polynesian Nautical Stick Charts Project. With this project, Students will learn about Ancient Polynesian stick charts, how they were created, and their significance. Then, they will build their own map using various materials and include islands of their choice. Once they have created their own charts, they will trade with a classmate to see if they can be read and understood by others. This project will take a couple of class periods so that students get an idea of how to tie the sticks together.

You’ll need some supplies such as:

Kabob sticks

Sea shells

Clay

Beads

Strings

Build an Edible Coral Polyp

Students love a good food lab. They can be messy but they are fun and educational too! This Edible Coral Polyp Lab is a simple lab that you can do with students to review coral polyp anatomy. Students bring in different candies or snacks to create their coral polyp. However, the foods they use must represent the different parts of the anatomy for their coral polyp. Have your students review the anatomy, the function of each feature and how the food they choose represents that anatomical feature. This one was always a favorite in my marine science class!

Marine Animals Bingo

If you are looking for a way to have your students review characteristics of marine animals, this Marine Organisms Bingo Game is perfect. It is played similar to the traditional style of Bingo but, in order to win, students need to be able to identify and understand the characteristics of organisms in various phyla, classes and orders. As the teacher, you read off the characteristics and the students mark the correct organism on their Bingo card. Make the game easier by giving students game cards with images or make it more challenging by providing game cards without images.

Marine Animals ABC Book

One of my favorite projects is the ABC’s of Marine Vertebrates Book. This is a collaborative project in which each student’s contribution puts the whole project together. Each student gets a page of a book with a letter. The students have to find a marine vertebrate that matches that letter and research it’s characteristics. Then, they draw their animal and color it. Once all students are complete, you can place all the pages together in order, bind the book with string and there you have it! A book that your class made together. Sometimes, we donate the book to our local elementary school so that the younger students can enjoy it.
