What I Wish I Knew as a First Year Middle School Science Teacher

Starting your first year teaching middle school science can feel equal parts exciting and overwhelming. You spend so much time thinking about lesson plans, classroom management, grading, parent communication, labs, supplies, and somehow trying to stay organized through all of it.

If you’re a first year middle school science teacher, I want you to know something right away: you do not have to have everything figured out.

I still remember my first year in the classroom. I wanted every lesson to be perfect. I thought I needed to create every activity from scratch, keep students engaged every second of the day, and somehow magically balance all the responsibilities that come with teaching. Spoiler alert…that’s impossible.

Over time, I learned that the teachers who survive and thrive are not the ones doing the most. They’re the ones finding systems that work, building relationships with students, and giving themselves permission to grow.

If I could go back and talk to myself during that first year, these are the things I would say.

You Don’t Have to Create Everything from Scratch

This is probably the advice I wish someone had drilled into my brain on day one.

As a new teacher, it’s easy to feel like using pre-made resources somehow means you’re not a “good” teacher. That could not be further from the truth.

There are incredible curriculum supports and teaching resources already out there. Use them.

Your energy is much better spent focusing on:

Building relationships with students
Learning classroom management
Improving your delivery of content
Adjusting lessons based on student needs
Figuring out what works for your teaching style

Creating every worksheet, slideshow, lab, and activity from scratch is a fast track to burnout.

Textbooks can absolutely be helpful, but they should not be your only teaching tool.

Middle school students need variety. They need opportunities to interact with content in different ways, especially in science.

If your school allows it, mix in:

Stations
Videos

Discussion prompts
Reading passages from multiple sources
Quick demos

Also, let me say this because I think more teachers need to hear it. Not every lesson is going to be wildly exciting and that’s okay.

Some days are naturally more engaging than others. Some lessons require direct instruction. Some concepts just take more focus and practice.

You’re a teacher. Not a full-time entertainer.

Your classroom doesn’t need to look like a viral social media video every single day in order for students to learn.

Classroom Management is Built on Routines

If there’s one thing that will save your sanity as a first year middle school science teacher, it’s routines.

Middle school students thrive when they know what to expect.

Some routines that have made a huge difference in my classroom:

Greeting students at the door
Displaying a daily agenda slide
Starting every class with a warm-up
Having materials ready before students walk in
Keeping transitions consistent

Daily warm-ups became one of my absolute non-negotiables. Not only did they help students settle in quickly, but they also:

Reinforced science concepts over time
Reduced behavior issues
Helped students transition into learning mode
Gave me time to take attendance and handle quick tasks

Agenda slides were another lifesaver. They helped me stay organized, kept students on track and made it easier for parents to stay informed when I posted them online.

The more predictable your routines are, the smoother your classroom will run.

Interactive Science Notebooks are a Game-Changer

Interactive science notebooks completely changed the way I organized my classroom.

Instead of students having random papers shoved into folders or backpacks, everything stayed in one place.

Interactive notebooks help:

Keep learning organized
Encourage active engagement during a lesson
Support studying and review
Give students ownership over their learning

I also loved that students could look back at previous concepts throughout the year. Even if students weren’t in a tested grade level, those notebooks became such a valuable reference tool later on.

Honestly, they even help students when they move into high school science because they still have access to foundational concepts and vocabulary.

For middle school science especially, interactive notebooks are one of those tools that just make everything feel more manageable.

You Don’t Have to Grade Everything

Please hear me on this one. You do not need to grade every single thing students do.

When I first started teaching, I thought every assignment needed a grade in the gradebook. That quickly became overwhelming and honestly unnecessary.

Instead, focus your grading on assignments that truly demonstrate mastery.

Everything else can simply be:

Practice
Feedback opportunities
Class discussion
Participation
Self-checking activities

Not only does this save you time, but it creates a more accurate picture of what students actually know and can do.

Completion grades can sometimes inflate or distort student understanding. Prioritizing mastery-based grading helps the gradebook better reflect student learning. And maybe most importantly…it protects your own workload and mental health.

Make Science Relevant

One of the fastest ways to lose student engagement is teaching science in a way that feels disconnected from real life.

Middle school students constantly want to know, “When am I ever going to use this?”

The more you can connect science concepts to:

Real-world situations
Student interests
Everyday life
Current events
Careers
Sports
Technology

…the more invested students become.

Even small connections make a difference.

Students are naturally curious. Tapping into that curiosity helps science feel meaningful instead of just another class they have to sit through.

Relationships Matter More Than You Think

I’m a firm disbeliever in the whole “don’t smile until Christmas” mentality.

You can absolutely be firm, structured, and consistent while also showing students your personality. Building relationships with students is not a weakness. It’s one of the greatest strengths you can have as a teacher.

Some of the best relationship-building strategies are simple:

Greeting students daily
Having quick conversations
Laughing with students
Showing interest in their activities
Letting your personality come through

That does not mean becoming best friends with students or letting boundaries disappear. It simply means creating a classroom environment where students feel respected, welcomed, and comfortable learning.

Students work harder for teachers they feel connected to. And honestly? Teaching becomes a whole lot more enjoyable when relationships are part of your classroom culture.

Not Every Lesson Will Go as Planned

This one is inevitable.

At some point a lab will flop. Technology will fail. Students won’t understand a lesson you thought was crystal clear.

It happens to every teacher. The biggest thing I learned was to stop viewing those moments as failures.

Instead, learn to adjust, reflect, improve, and move forward.

Some of your best teaching growth will come from lessons that didn’t go perfectly. And always, always have a backup plan ready just in case.

If you’re a first year middle school science teacher, give yourself permission to learn as you go.

You’re not supposed to know everything.

The first year is full of trial and error, growth, adjustments, and figuring out what works for you and your students. Some days will feel amazing and some days will feel incredibly hard. That’s normal.

Focus on progress over perfection.

Build routines. Keep things simple. Use the resources available to you. Prioritize relationships. And remember that great teaching is something you develop over time, not something you magically master in year one.

You’re doing better than you think.

But even though science is naturally fascinating, students can still check out if the lesson structure feels repetitive or overly passive.

The good news? Creating engaging middle school science lessons does not require a total curriculum overhaul, a Pinterest-perfect setup, or hours of extra planning every week.

Sometimes the smallest instructional shifts make the biggest difference.

By adding a little more movement, variety, and student ownership into your classroom, you can completely transform the energy of your lessons and help students connect more deeply with the content you’re already teaching.

5 Signs Your Science Lessons Might Be Falling Flat

Sometimes it’s obvious when a lesson isn’t working. Other times, students appear “quiet” or compliant, but they’re not actually engaged.

Here are a few common signs that your students may be mentally checked out during class:

Students Are Quiet… But Not Actually Engaged

There’s a big difference between a calm classroom and a disconnected classroom.

If students are staring blankly, waiting for directions to repeat, or simply going through the motions, that’s usually a sign they’re not truly invested in the learning.

Middle school students need opportunities to interact with content, discuss ideas, and actively participate.

Students Constantly Ask, “What Are We Doing?”

If students seem confused about the purpose of the activity or keep asking what they’re supposed to be doing next, the lesson may not feel meaningful or engaging to them.

Students are much more likely to participate when they understand the goal and feel involved in the process.

Students Rush Through Their Work

You know the type of assignment that gets completed in two minutes with little effort just so students can say they’re “done.”

When students are racing through work, it often means the activity lacks challenge, ownership, or genuine engagement.

Students Are Easily Distracted

If students are frequently off-task, talking about unrelated topics, or zoning out, it may not be a behavior issue at all.

Sometimes students simply need more opportunities to move, collaborate, or interact with the lesson in a different way.

Students Struggle to Explain What They Learned

This is one of the biggest indicators of them all.

If students completed the assignment but can’t explain the concept afterward, the lesson may have relied too heavily on passive learning instead of active understanding.

The Real Reason Your Lessons Feel Boring

Let me say this first: it is not because you’re a bad teacher.

It’s probably not because your students “don’t care” either.

Most of the time, lessons start feeling stale because we fall into survival-mode teaching patterns. We rely on what’s easy, familiar, or manageable during busy seasons. I’ve been there too.

But creating engaging middle school science lessons often comes down to one important thing:

How students interact with the content.

Here are a few common reasons lessons may start to feel low-energy:

Too Much Passive Learning

If students spend most of the class listening, reading independently, or completing worksheets silently, engagement naturally drops over time.

Middle school students learn best when they are doing something with the content.

Not Enough Variety

Even great activities can lose their excitement if they’re used every single day.

Students thrive on novelty and variety. Rotating instructional strategies helps keep students interested and motivated.

Lack of Student Ownership

When students have no voice or choice in their learning, lessons can quickly start to feel like something being done to them instead of with them.

Ownership creates investment.

Over-Reliance on One Resource

Textbooks and slides absolutely have their place, but if every lesson follows the same format, students begin to predict the routine and disengage.

The goal is not to reinvent your classroom every day. It’s simply to create more opportunities for interaction and participation.

The Good News? These Are Easy Problems to Fix

When teachers tell me their lessons feel flat, they often assume they need to find an entirely new curriculum, create elaborate projects, or spend hours searching for fresh activities.

But that’s usually not the case.

More often than not, engagement problems can be traced back to a few simple classroom routines that have become a little too predictable. And the solution isn’t doing more. It’s making a few intentional changes to how students experience the content.

The three strategies below are some of my favorite ways to increase engagement because they’re easy to implement, work with almost any science topic, and don’t require a ton of extra prep.

Fix #1: Add More Variety Without Adding More Planning

One of the easiest ways to improve engagement is to vary how students experience the content.

The best part? You do not need to create elaborate lessons from scratch.

In fact, many engaging middle school science lessons are built from simple instructional strategies that can be reused again and again.

Here are a few easy ways to add more variety to your classroom:

Rotate Through Stations

You already know I love stations.

Science stations naturally keep students engaged because they break learning into smaller chunks and allow students to move around the room while interacting with content in different ways.

You can include:

reading stations
task cards
short videos
hands-on activities
review games
teacher-led small groups

Even simple station rotations can completely change the energy of your classroom.

Incorporate Quick Demos

You don’t always need a full lab to make science exciting.

Sometimes a short, attention-grabbing demonstration at the beginning of class is enough to spark curiosity and increase participation throughout the lesson.

Middle school students love moments that make them say, “Wait… what just happened?”

Use More Discussion Opportunities

Students need opportunities to talk through their thinking.

Try incorporating:

turn-and-talks
partner discussions
small group collaboration
debate-style questions
claim/evidence reasoning discussions

The more students verbally process ideas, the deeper their understanding becomes.

Add Educational Review Games

Review games are always a win in middle school science.

Activities like:

Blooket
Kahoot
Quizizz
Jeopardy
Bingo
Trashketball

can instantly boost participation and energy levels in your classroom. Students rarely complain about review when it feels like a game.

Fix #2: Get Students Moving

Middle schoolers are not meant to sit still for an entire class period.

Will they moan and groan a little when you ask them to get up? Absolutely.

Will they secretly enjoy it anyway? Also yes.

Movement can dramatically improve focus, participation, and engagement during science lessons.

Here are a few easy ways to incorporate movement into your classroom:

Station Rotations

This is probably one of the easiest movement-based strategies to implement because it naturally fits into science instruction.

Students stay more engaged simply because they are physically changing locations and tasks.

Gallery Walks

Gallery walks are one of my favorite ways to review concepts or analyze information.

You can post:

diagrams
task cards
graphs
CER prompts
vocabulary questions
lab analysis tasks

around the room and have students rotate in pairs or groups.

This works especially well with task cards because students stay active while reviewing content.

Partner Activities

Students love opportunities to collaborate.

Even something as simple as a partner sort activity or collaborative problem-solving task can help increase engagement and accountability.

Escape Rooms

Science escape rooms are always a hit.

They encourage teamwork, critical thinking, movement, and problem-solving all at once. Plus, students become incredibly invested in completing the challenge.

The engagement level during an escape room is usually unmatched.

Fix #3: Give Students More Choice

Choice creates ownership and ownership creates engagement.

When students feel like they have some control over their learning experience, participation naturally increases.

This does not mean you need to offer unlimited freedom or create ten different assignments every week.

Small choices can make a huge impact.

Try Choice Boards

Choice boards are a simple way to give students flexibility while still practicing the same concepts.

Students might choose between:

creating a diagram
answering task cards
completing a review game
writing explanations
making a short presentation

The learning target stays the same, but students feel more invested in how they get there.

If your classroom has been feeling low-energy lately, don’t panic.

You don’t need to throw out your curriculum or completely reinvent your teaching style overnight.

Start small.

Add one new discussion strategy. Try a gallery walk. Incorporate a review game. Give students a little more movement or choice during class.

Those small shifts can completely change the feel of your classroom over time.

The truth is, engaging middle school science lessons are not about being entertaining every second of the day. They’re about creating opportunities for students to actively connect with the content in meaningful ways.

But here’s the truth: you don’t need a science degree to teach middle schools science effectively.

What you do need is a simple structure, a few reliable tools, and a mindset that science should be explored, not perfected. With the right approach, homeschool science can easily become one of the most engaging (and surprisingly fun) parts of your day.

Let’s walk through exactly how to make that happen.

Make Homeschool Science so Much Easier

Electricity and magnetism
Matter
Light and the electromagnetic spectrum

Some of these topics can feel intimidating at first, but with the right structure, they become very manageable.

Do I have to teach all of this at once?

Absolutely not.

One of the biggest misconceptions about homeschool science is that you need to cover everything all the time. You don’t.

Most homeschool science curriculum plans follow on of two approaches:

Option 1: Rotate by year

6th grade: Earth Science
7th grade: Life Science
8th grade: Physical Science

Option 2: Spiral all three each year

You’ll introduce a mix of topics from each branch throughout the year.

Honestly? I’ve done both and I tend to prefer the mixed approach. It keeps things fresh and helps students make connections across topics.

Hands-on stations

The good news? It doesn’t take a complete overhaul to make science enjoyable. A few small shifts can turn it into something your student actually looks forward to.

Let your student be curious

It’s easy to feel like you need to move through lessons quickly to “stay on track.” But in science, some of the best learning happens when you slow down.

When your student asks questions, pause and lean into them.

“What would happen if we changed this?”

You don’t need a multi-week, Pinterest-perfect project. Instead, think in terms of:

When students begin to see science in the world around them, something changes. It stops feeling like something they have to learn and starts feeling like something they notice.

And that’s really the goal of any homeschool science curriculum, To help students understand and make sense of the world they’re living in.

You don’t have to overcomplicate this

If there’s one thing I want you to take away, it’s this: Your homeschool science curriculum doesn’t need to be complicated to be effective.

You don’t need:

A science degree
Expensive materials
A perfectly planned year

What you do need is:

A simple structure
Consistent routines
Engaging, hands-on opportunities

When you combine those things, science becomes something your student looks forward to, not something you stress about.

If you teach middle school science, chances are you already use interactive notebooks in your classroom. They’re lifesavers for keeping students organized and providing a built-in-reference tool throughout the year. But if you’re only using your interactive science notebooks for notes, you’re missing out on one of the most valuable interactive science notebook uses.

What if your interactive science notebooks could do more than just hold notes? What if they could help your students actually understand science, think like scientists, and track their own growth?

Spoiler alert: they can. Reflection is the secret ingredient that turns a notebook into a thinking playground.

Let me show you how to make reflection a regular part of your interactive science notebooks, and watch your students’ learning take off.

Start with a self-rating

Before we start a new unit, I have my middle school students set learning goals, think about what they already know, and then rate themselves from 1-4 on a learning scale. Most of them look at me like, “I don’t know ANY of this” and give themselves a 1. And that’s okay! This sets the stage for all the learning that’s ahead.

Fast forward a few weeks and we revisit this page again. After going through labs, notes, and activities during the unit we’re in, students rate themselves again. They’re almost always shocked at how far they’ve come.

Why reflection belongs in every interactive science notebook

Have you ever finished a lesson or wrapped up a perfect lab, and then the next day a student looks at you like you’ve never even mentioned this topic to them before? Yeah…same. That’s why reflection saves the day.

Reflection is a built-in pause button for your students. Instead of racing straight to the next activity or copying down another page of notes, it gives students space to stop and process.

This pause matters. Without it, the lesson you just spent so much energy on could easily become a blur. With it, students are more likely to actually own their learning.

Here’s what it could look like:

After a lab, have students write two sentences about the most important thing they learned.
Or, have them sketch! Middle schoolers secretly love to doodle. Asking them to draw what they observed, or illustrate a process we just learned, is another form of reflection that helps solidify content.

Reflection doesn’t have to be long to be effective. Sometimes the quickest prompts lead to the deepest thinking.

Metacognition might be the most powerful skill students never talk about.

When we build reflection into our interactive notebooks, we’re actually helping students develop one of the most valuable skills they’ll ever learn: metacognition. AKA thinking about their own thinking.

Students who reflect regularly start to notice patterns. They’ll realize things like, I always remember concepts better when I make a chart, or reading silently doesn’t help me as much as explaining it out loud. This kind of awareness doesn’t only help them in science, but it helps them in every subject, and honestly in life!

Metacognition also helps with perseverance. When students hit a tricky lab or confusing concept, instead of shutting down, they can think back to what strategies work for them before.

Honestly, this might be one of my favorite interactive science notebook uses because it’s giving students lifelong tools. They’ll probably forget the exact steps of cellular respiration one day (don’t we all?), but if they walk away from your class knowing how they learn best? That will stick forever.

Want students to actually remember what they learn? Start with memory and retention.

Middle school brains are busy places. Between soccer practice, TikTok trends, and remembering which friend owes them a pencil, it’s no wonder yesterday’s lesson sometimes vanishes overnight. Reflection gives students a chance to lock in what they learned before it slips away.

When students write something in their own words, or even sketch it, they’re strengthening memory pathways. It’s like telling your brain, hey, this matters! Don’t delete it!

Here are a few of my favorite quick reflection prompts to help boost memory and retention:

What’s one thing from today you could teach to a 5th grader?
Draw a quick sketch that sums up our lab results from today.

These only take a few minutes and help information stick around long after the unit is over. And the best part? When students flip back through their notebooks later in the year, they see their own words and drawings staring back at them. Instant review, no study guide required.

Reflection trains students to use scientific thinking every day.

Ever notice how some students follow instructions perfectly in a lab, but don’t really think about what’s happening? Reflection helps students slow down and notice patterns, ask questions, and actually make sense of the results.

Reflection gives them a chance to practice thinking like a scientist. After a lab, I ask questions like:

What surprised you most about the results?
What would you change if you ran this experiment again?
What new question popped in your head after this activity?

Their answers are always a mix of aha moments and funny misconceptions. But both are useful and help me see what students are noticing, questioning, and understanding. When students reflect this way regularly, they start to approach experiments with curiosity and problem solving in mind.

Reflection Builds Communication That Sticks

Reflection is a sneaky way to get students talking, and writing, about science without even realizing it! Every time they explain what they learned, justify a claim, or summarize a lab in their own words, they’re practicing communication skills.

One simple trick I use: have students answer a reflection prompt like, “Explain this concept to someone who wasn’t in class today.” Some students write a paragraph, while others doodle diagrams, but either way, they’re forced to organize their thinking clearly.

Over time, students start using terms and reasoning more confidently, not only in writing, but in discussions, presentations, and even casual classroom conversations.

Flipping through a student’s interactive notebook is like getting a peek inside their brain. Reflection pages show what students really understand, what confuses them, and where those aha moments happen.

Some of my favorite insights come from the little things:

A student doodling a diagram that shows they almost got it, but forgot one key step. That’s a perfect spot for a quick mini lesson.
Another student writing a paragraph that nails the concept, even if they stumbled on the quiz.
Students admitting what’s still tricky for them. Nothing gets lost in the shuffle. You know exactly what to focus on next.

Based on these reflections, I can adjust my teaching on the fly. Maybe I’ll review a tricky concept with a small group or give extra examples where I see patterns of confusion.

Over time, reading reflections also gives you a front row seat to growth! You see misconceptions turn into correct reasoning and students connecting ideas in ways they couldn’t at the beginning of the year.

Reflection supports your students' growth mindsets

Reflection helps students see learning as a journey, not just a grade on a test. When they track their progress in their notebooks, they notice small wins and growth over time.

Some easy ways to prompt this:

What’s something you understand better now than last week?
What challenge did you overcome in this unit?
What will you try differently next time?

Reading reflections over time shows students that mistakes aren’t failures, they’re stepping stones. And honestly, as teachers, it reminds us too that we are still supporting growth even when the work feels messy or slow. Sometimes the best lesson we model is just that we can do hard things, and so can they.

Interactive science notebooks are already great for organization and accountability, but when you add reflection, you’re giving your students a tool that helps them think about their thinking. It’s like adding rocket fuel to their learning.

Once you are able to tie heat transfer and thermal energy to everyday moments, the lightbulbs go off. Like, why does your spoon get hot when you stir a bowl of soup? Or, why does your water bottle feel cold in the summer even if the air around it is warm?

I’ve got a collection of thermal energy activities that do just that. They connect content to real life to get students moving, thinking, and experimenting. So, let’s turn up the heat and see thermal energy in action with these hands-on activities.

Cook Up Curiosity with These Thermal Energy Activities

Your middle school students may not remember every quiz question you put in front of them, but they will definitely remember the day they made s’mores in science class. Those are the kinds of lessons that stick. Literally to their fingers…and also in their brain.

Middle schoolers light up when they realize science can be delicious. Food labs turn abstract concepts into experiences they’ll talk about at lunch, on the bus ride home, and even years later when they look back at your class.

Food labs don’t have to be fancy or time-consuming to be unforgettable. With a few simple ingredients, you can build an experience that will have your students explaining exactly how a marshmallow can crisp.

S’More Than Just a Snack: Heat Transfer in Action

This s’mores lab turns a favorite treat into a hands-on exploration of thermal energy transfer, no campfire needed! Students get to cook a s’more three different ways while seeing conduction, convection, and radiation in action.

Radiation: Place the marshmallow under a heat lamp and watch how the heat travels without ever touching the marshmallow to the lamp!
Convection: Use a steam kettle to cook the marshmallow from the air moving around it. Students can see how warm air transfers thermal energy.
Conduction: Put the marshmallow on a hot plate and observe the direct heat transfer from the surface.

Marshmallows may melt, but the concepts stick, and students leave knowing exactly how heat can travel.

Chill Out with This Cool Thermal Energy Activity

Did you know you can also connect ice cream to thermal energy transfer? This classic lab is always a hit, but the real fun happens when students see the science behind the sweetness. As they make their own ice cream, they get a front row seat to thermal energy in action.

Here’s how we make it happen:

Mix and Shake: Students combine cream, sugar, and vanilla in a small bag and seal it. Then, they place it in a larger bag with ice and rock salt, and shake!
Observe Particle Motion Changes: Ask students to sketch or describe how the particles in the cream change as it freezes.
Connect the Science: Discuss how rock salt lowers the freezing point and why that helps the ice cream thicken faster.
Wrap It Up with CER: Students use a Claim-Evidence-Reasoning template to explain their results in a structured way.

This activity not only satisfies a sweet tooth, but also makes thermal energy transfer tangible, turning a favorite treat into a memorable science lesson.

Quick Thermal Energy Activities that Bring the Heat

Sometimes, you just need a fast, eye-catching activity to grab your middle school students’ attention. That’s where demos come in. Think of demos as that “instant wow” moment that get students noticing patterns and asking questions. They’re the perfect complement to labs and your entire Thermal Energy and Heat unit.

Tiny Drops, Big Lessons

No fancy equipment, no prep headaches, just warm water, cold water, and a swirl of food coloring to bring particle motion to life. Add a few drops of food coloring in warm water and watch it swirl like magic! Then, try the same in cold water and notice how much slower it moves. It’s a simple, visual way to show particle motion and it gets students leaning in without any prep or stress.

Ice Cube Insulation Challenge

Once students have seen thermal energy in motion in water, it’s fun to level it up with ice cubes!

For this next demo, give each group of students an ice cube and challenge them to see how materials impact how fast (or slow!) it melts. Provide your students with a mix of materials like aluminum foil, cotton, plastic wrap, and cardboard. Have them experiment to see which melts fastest or slowest. Through this activity, students get hands-on practice testing insulation and observing thermal energy transfer.

Light Up Your Learning with Glow Sticks

Try literally lighting up thermal energy with glow sticks!

Crack three glow sticks and place one in hot water, one in ice water, and one at room temperature. Students will notice that the hot water stick glows brightest but fades quickly, while the cold one glows dim but lasts longer. This visual demonstration makes particle motion and reaction rates tangible, and adds a bit of magic that keeps students talking.

Interactive Notebooks Make Thermal Energy Concepts Stick

After engaging your students with a lab or demo, give your students a few minutes in their interactive notebooks to turn curiosity into understanding. Interactive notebooks are that simple bridge from hands-on exploration to learning that sticks. This is where your middle school students can slow down, put their observations into words, and start connecting the dots on all the thermal energy activities you just did.

I love using guided notes because they give students a chance to be part of the lesson instead of just observing what’s happening around them. I like to sprinkle in checkpoints and once our notes are complete, they get added to their interactive notebooks as a reference point for later.

I print the activities as a little booklet for each student so they can practice the skills we’ve been exploring. For example, in your interactive notebooks, your students could could:

Use vocabulary in context, making terms like conduction, convection, and radiation stick.
Connect thermal energy to real-world concepts.
Draw diagrams showing how thermal energy flows from one object to another.

By taking just a few minutes to record observations, reflect on a lesson, and practice concepts, students leave with a clear understanding and a notebook they can actually use as a reference later.

Every classroom has its own rhythm, and the fun part is finding yours! Some days call for a food lab that gets your middle school students out of their seats and working hands-on. Other days, a quick glow stick demo is exactly what you need to grab their attention and make a hot concept click. And sometimes, the quiet structure of a well-used interactive notebook is what ties it all together.

The truth is, there isn’t a single “right” way to teach the transfer of heat and energy. It’s the balance of these strategies that make science come alive. By leaning into variety, you’re not only reinforcing the content, but also giving every student a chance to connect with the material in their own way.

So whether you’re toasting the perfect marshmallow, mixing rock salt for ice cream, or cracking a glow stick to watch particle motion in action, know that each activity has value and helps bring the heat. Together, they create a classroom where curiosity thrives, connections are made, and heat transfer becomes more than a unit. Because in middle school science class, it’s about transferring excitement, learning, and heat.

Using A Learning Progression Scale with Interactive Notebooks

Interactive notebooks are one of my absolute favorite things to incorporate into my classroom! I start them in the beginning of the year and we use them throughout the school year. Every. Single. Day. My students know when they walk into the room, they need to grab their folder and their notebook. Not only do we use our notebooks for organization but we also use them for tracking growth throughout the year with learning progression scales!

What is a learning progression scale?

A learning progression scale sets targets for proficiency levels within a unit. They range from 1-4 with a 1 being the lowest level and 4 being the highest. They lay out the skills and goals for students to master learning targets.

Reasons for adding these accessories to your interactive notebook:

Makes standards, objectives and goals easy to reference at any time.
Actively requires students to think about what they already know and do not know.
Promotes reflection and accountability.

Having Learning Goals Accessible for Students

We all know that we are supposed to have our learning goals written on our board or presented on a wall somewhere in our classroom for our students to see but what about when students aren’t in our classroom? What if they are struggling on an assignment and aren’t quite sure what it is they need to know or demonstrate? By having students include a learning progression scale in their interactive notebooks, they can use this as a guide and track their learning. We refer to it often in the classroom throughout a unit.

Right before we begin a new lesson, I have my students complete the learning progression scale with me or I give them a copy of one they can glue into their notebooks. I review the learning goals with them as a class and we go over the levels of progression. A student would rate themselves as a 1 if the material is brand new to them and a 4 if they consider themselves an expert. Think about the kid who can basically teach the class type of expert. Each level is described for them so they know how to appropriately label themselves. After selecting a rating, they explain why they rate themselves that way.

My aim is to get all students to a 3. That’s how I know they are proficient in the material.

Reflections on Learning

So you have taught the lessons, assigned the supplementary resources, completed the projects, given the assessment, etc. Now what? It doesn’t end there… Now it is time to reflect! We go back to that learning progression scale and rate ourselves again with the same 1-4 scale. Once again, students will explain why they rated themselves this way.

You can take it a step further and have students complete these reflections with you in a student-teacher conference setting while discussing assessment scores. The student can explain their strengths in the topic as well as weaknesses. This helps not only the student understand where they may need extra help but it is also valuable feedback for you as a teacher!

Tracking Assessment Data

An assessment tracker that students can have in their notebooks and update frequently is a quick and easy tool that helps our middle school students hold themselves more accountable for their learning. I usually dedicate the very last page of the notebook to this tracker. They can track pre and post assessment data on it to see their growth throughout the school year. Best part? It takes only a minute or so to fill out for students once they have gotten their grades back.

I truly believe that by laying out exactly what students need to know and teaching them to reflect on their learning really makes it more meaningful to them. This is what makes the knowledge stick!
