									<span style="font-weight: 400;">The Periodic Table of Elements is truly an organizational masterpiece. I can appreciate that, even as a Type B teacher. However, the first time you place a Periodic Table in front of your middle school science students, they will probably look insanely confused. </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">What are those letters? What do the different colors mean? Is this even English?  </span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">I can’t blame them. Didn’t you have those same thoughts the first time you saw one? I’m giving you a list of periodic table activities to help your students not only understand how to read the periodic table but also engage them as well!</span>

&nbsp;

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Here are a few of the key things you may want your middle school science students to know and be able to do by the end of your Periodic Table unit:</span>

&nbsp;
<ul>
 	<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><strong>How to gain information from the Periodic Table </strong></li>
 	<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><strong>Understand the arrangement of the periodic table (groups and periods)</strong></li>
 	<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><strong>Explain how properties are used to classify elements</strong></li>
 	<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><strong>Recognize that elements are grouped in the periodic table according to similarities of their properties</strong></li>
</ul>
&nbsp;

<span style="font-weight: 400;">If you need to review Atoms and the Atomic Theory before you begin your Periodic table unit, </span><a href="https://secondarysparks.com/6-atoms-activities-for-middle-school-students/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">read about how to teach an atoms unit here.</span></a>

&nbsp;
<h2><b>1. Engagement and Introducing the Periodic Table</b><b></b></h2>
<span style="font-weight: 400;">Give students the basic information they need to understand the periodic table. This is where you will explicitly teach your students how to obtain information from it. I like to begin this unt with an engagement piece. Have students categorize something common such as fruit, clothing items, sports or celebrities. Ask them why they grouped these things in the way they did. Then, discuss how the periodic table is essentially an organizational tool for scientists.</span>

&nbsp;

<span style="font-weight: 400;">After you have done this activity, you can move into a </span><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Periodic-Table-of-Elements-Editable-PowerPoint-Guided-Notes-and-Assessment-5702974?utm_source=Periodic%20Table%20Blog%202023&amp;utm_campaign=PT%20gn%20assess"><span style="font-weight: 400;">periodic table lesson with guided notes</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. You can scaffold these notes with fill in the blank options, have them fill out notes digitally using Google Slides or give them the option of taking notes more independently. Checkpoints throughout the lesson help to reinforce the concepts and help students practice reading information on the periodic table.</span>

&nbsp;

<img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="wp-image-3314 aligncenter" src="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/1-300x200.png" alt="periodic table activities guided notes" width="510" height="340" srcset="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/1-300x200.png 300w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/1-1024x683.png 1024w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/1-768x512.png 768w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/1-600x400.png 600w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/1.png 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 510px) 100vw, 510px" />
<h2>2. Periodic Table Scavenger Hunt</h2>
<span style="font-weight: 400;">Let your students get a little competitive with this one. Create a list of elements, and give students clues or descriptions to find the corresponding element on the periodic table. This can be done individually or in teams. The repetitive nature of an activity like this mixed with competition will really get your middle school students engaged. They play to win, right?</span>

&nbsp;
<h2><strong>3. Periodic Table of Elements Activities</strong></h2>
<span style="font-weight: 400;">These are some simple </span><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Periodic-Table-of-Elements-Digital-Google-Slides-and-Print-Activities-5702982?utm_source=Periodic%20Table%20Blog%202023&amp;utm_campaign=PT%20gs%20"><span style="font-weight: 400;">periodic table of elements activities</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> that can be used to review vocabulary, practice filling in missing parts of the periodic table, identifying elements with similar properties and researching where elements are found in nature. This portion of the activity gives students some real world context in understanding how these elements influence our day to day lives. Answer that “why do we need to know this?” question that our students just love to ask.</span>

&nbsp;

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Assign these in Google Classroom or print them out for your students interactive science notebooks!</span>

&nbsp;
<h2><b>4. Elements Christmas Ornaments Activity </b></h2>
&nbsp;

<span style="font-weight: 400;">If it’s around the holiday season when you get to your periodic table unit, then this activity is so much fun! Give your students one of these little element ornaments and have them fill out information on an element of their choice. When they finish adding their information and coloring it, laminate the ornaments, punch a hole, add string, add them to a class Christmas tree and there you have it. A “chemistree!” </span><a href="https://www.instagram.com/reel/ClrQnLMNcWK/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&amp;igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA=="><span style="font-weight: 400;">Check out this one I made with my students! </span></a>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Grab the free element ornaments activity <a href="https://secondary-sparks.myflodesk.com/gm3dzus29n">here.</a></span>
<h2><b>5. Stations</b></h2>
&nbsp;

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Differentiating instruction is important and using stations is one of those teaching methods that allow you to provide a whole bunch of differentiation in one class period. These </span><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Periodic-Table-Stations-Editable-and-Google-Slides--10272079?utm_source=Periodic%20Table%20Blog%202023&amp;utm_campaign=PT%20stations"><span style="font-weight: 400;">periodic table stations activities</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> provide students with 7 different stations. Students research elements in their food, practice using PhET’s “</span><a href="https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulations/build-an-atom"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Build an Atom</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">” simulation, create element trading cards and more.</span>
<h2><img decoding="async" class=" wp-image-3315 aligncenter" src="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/2-300x200.png" alt="periodic table activities activities stations" width="437" height="291" srcset="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/2-300x200.png 300w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/2-1024x683.png 1024w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/2-768x512.png 768w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/2-600x400.png 600w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/2.png 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 437px) 100vw, 437px" /><b>6. Make Bohr Models</b></h2>
<span style="font-weight: 400;">If one of your standards includes having students understand Bohr models, students can create them using pipe cleaners and beads to make different models of atoms. You can find templates as part of the </span><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Periodic-Table-Stations-Editable-and-Google-Slides--10272079?utm_source=Periodic%20Table%20Blog%202023&amp;utm_campaign=PT%20stations"><span style="font-weight: 400;">periodic table stations activities</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span>

&nbsp;
<h2><b>7. Element Stories</b></h2>
<span style="font-weight: 400;">Challenge students to create short stories, videos, animations or comics where elements are characters with unique personalities and abilities based on their properties. This adds a creative “element” to your lesson. </span>

&nbsp;
<h2><b>8. Element Trading Cards</b></h2>
<span style="font-weight: 400;">Students design trading cards with an element&#8217;s symbol, atomic number, atomic mass, and a fun fact about the element. Students can trade and collect them. This can be a quick activity. A template is included in the </span><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Periodic-Table-Stations-Editable-and-Google-Slides--10272079?utm_source=Periodic%20Table%20Blog%202023&amp;utm_campaign=PT%20stations"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Periodic Table Stations</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> activity.</span>

<img decoding="async" class="wp-image-3316 aligncenter" src="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/periodic-table-activities-trading-card-200x300.png" alt="periodic table activities trading card" width="366" height="549" srcset="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/periodic-table-activities-trading-card-200x300.png 200w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/periodic-table-activities-trading-card-683x1024.png 683w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/periodic-table-activities-trading-card-768x1152.png 768w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/periodic-table-activities-trading-card-400x600.png 400w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/periodic-table-activities-trading-card-600x900.png 600w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/periodic-table-activities-trading-card.png 800w" sizes="(max-width: 366px) 100vw, 366px" />

&nbsp;
<h2><b>9. Periodic Table Battleship</b></h2>
<span style="font-weight: 400;">Modify the classic game of Battleship using a printed periodic table. Instead of ships, students will place their &#8220;battleships&#8221; on elements, and they can use element symbols to call out coordinates.</span>

&nbsp;
<h2><b>10.Task Cards</b></h2>
<span style="font-weight: 400;">Another great resource for review. These </span><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Periodic-Table-of-Elements-Editable-Task-Cards-5702983?utm_source=Periodic%20Table%20Blog%202023&amp;utm_campaign=PT%20task%20cards"><span style="font-weight: 400;">periodic table task cards</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> can be used in a variety of ways.</span>

&nbsp;
<ul>
 	<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Stations</span></li>

<h2><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-3303 aligncenter" src="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/periodic-table-acitivites-task-300x200.png" alt="periodic table activities task cards" width="450" height="300" srcset="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/periodic-table-acitivites-task-300x200.png 300w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/periodic-table-acitivites-task-1024x683.png 1024w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/periodic-table-acitivites-task-768x512.png 768w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/periodic-table-acitivites-task-600x400.png 600w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/periodic-table-acitivites-task.png 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px" />
<b style="font-family: 'Amatic SC';">11. Create a Class Periodic Table</b></h2>
&nbsp;

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Give students a half sheet of paper and have them research a specific element. Depending on how large you want this to be, you can assign students more than one element. Typically, I would use elements 1- 54. Put them all together to make an awesome hallway or classroom display.</span>

&nbsp;

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Here are some books that are great for your science classroom library that students can use to help give them a visual idea of what the elements look like and how they are used in the real world.</span>

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-3301 aligncenter" src="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/periodic-table-acitivites-books-300x200.png" alt="periodic table activities books" width="441" height="294" srcset="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/periodic-table-acitivites-books-300x200.png 300w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/periodic-table-acitivites-books-1024x683.png 1024w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/periodic-table-acitivites-books-768x512.png 768w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/periodic-table-acitivites-books-600x400.png 600w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/periodic-table-acitivites-books.png 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 441px) 100vw, 441px" />

<b>12. Choice Board</b></h2>
&nbsp;

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Choice boards make great end of unit projects and allow students to have some autonomy in how they demonstrate their knowledge. I have </span><a href="https://secondarysparks.com/3-lessons-i-learned-from-using-science-choice-boards/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">learned so much about my students from implementing choice boards</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> and you will too.This </span><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Periodic-Table-of-Elements-Choice-Board-5702969?utm_source=Periodic%20Table%20Blog%202023&amp;utm_campaign=PT%20choice"><span style="font-weight: 400;">periodic table choice board</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> offers students ideas such as creating their own “undiscovered” element, creating an infographic, making a fake social media post or a quick start guide that could be used to help a friend understand the periodic table.</span>

&nbsp;

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-3302 aligncenter" src="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/periodic-table-acitivites-choice-300x200.png" alt="periodic table activities choice board" width="428" height="285" srcset="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/periodic-table-acitivites-choice-300x200.png 300w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/periodic-table-acitivites-choice-1024x683.png 1024w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/periodic-table-acitivites-choice-768x512.png 768w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/periodic-table-acitivites-choice-600x400.png 600w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/periodic-table-acitivites-choice.png 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 428px) 100vw, 428px" />

I’ve had some pacing guides from my district in the past, but the units never seemed to line up the way I wanted. This left me to do things my own way and create a physical science pacing guide that worked for me.</span></p>

<h2><b>Unit 1: Lab Safety, Scientific Investigations &amp; Inquiry</b></h2>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Lab Safety. We all have to teach it, right? I use </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">at least</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> a week for this unit, especially in 6th grade, because they are learning the information for the first time. I use these </span><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Lab-Safety-Activities-Warm-Ups-Task-Cards-and-Choice-Board-5662759?utm_source=Physical%20Science%20Pacing&amp;utm_campaign=lab%20safety"><span style="font-weight: 400;">lab safety activities</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> (which are free, by the way) that include a set of warm ups, 24 task cards, and a choice board. Basically, all you need for a lab safety unit…for free!</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Next, I focus on </span><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Scientific-Investigations-and-Inquiry-Unit-Bundle-5577747?utm_source=Physical%20Science%20Pacing&amp;utm_campaign=SIAI%20bundle"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Scientific Investigations and Inquiry.</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> I teach this in isolation, especially in 6th grade, where the vocabulary is new. I explicitly teach this unit in the beginning and then infuse it in my labs and other physical science units throughout the year. My students always struggle with these concepts, so I don’t expect mastery the first go-round. Instead, I make sure to review, review, and review some more.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2><b>Unit 2: Matter&nbsp;</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">For the </span><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Matter-Bundle-5812806?utm_source=Physical%20Science%20Pacing&amp;utm_campaign=matter%20bundle"><span style="font-weight: 400;">matter physical science unit</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, I always start with atoms and the atomic theory. Then I move into properties of matter. Next, we discuss mass, volume, density, and other physical and chemical properties of matter.&nbsp;</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Those concepts naturally lead to physical and chemical changes, as well as changes in states of matter. Lastly, I teach the periodic table and pure substances and mixtures. You can grab a done-for-you </span><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Matter-Bundle-5812806?utm_source=Physical%20Science%20Pacing&amp;utm_campaign=matter%20bundle"><span style="font-weight: 400;">matter unit</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> to make teaching these concepts even easier.</span></p>

<h2><b>Unit 3: Waves</b></h2>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The </span><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Waves-Bundle-Properties-Light-and-Electromagnetic-Spectrum-5812711?utm_source=Physical%20Science%20Pacing&amp;utm_campaign=waves%20bundle"><span style="font-weight: 400;">waves unit</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> is my personal favorite. Most students have no prior knowledge of waves, so it can be a tough physical science unit, but I find it really fun. We start by discussing what a wave is, what they do, and the properties of waves.&nbsp;</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Then, students learn the difference between mechanical and electromagnetic waves as well as go into more depth with the electromagnetic spectrum. We end the unit with interactions of light waves. My </span><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Waves-Bundle-Properties-Light-and-Electromagnetic-Spectrum-5812711?utm_source=Physical%20Science%20Pacing&amp;utm_campaign=waves%20bundle"><span style="font-weight: 400;">waves bundle resource</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> has everything you need to teach this unit</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">&nbsp;</span></p>
<h2><b>Unit 4: Energy&nbsp;</b></h2>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Next in the physical science curriculum map is energy. This unit begins with what energy is and the different forms of energy. After talking about each form, we go into energy transformations and the law of conservation of energy. If you want to make this unit a total breeze, check out my </span><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Energy-Forms-and-Transformations-Unit-Bundle-5704315?utm_source=Physical%20Science%20Pacing&amp;utm_campaign=ENERGY%20bundle"><span style="font-weight: 400;">energy unit bundle</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p>

<h2><b>Unit 5: Forces and Motion</b></h2>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Our last physical science unit starts with a review of potential and kinetic energy. Then, we learn about motion, speed, and acceleration. Lastly, I save forces for the end of the year.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">We cover the different types of forces, including unbalanced and balanced forces, calculating net force, and more. We also review Newton’s Laws of Motion. With the </span><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Forces-and-Motion-Unit-Bundle-5577657?utm_source=Physical%20Science%20Pacing&amp;utm_campaign=FORCES%20bundle"><span style="font-weight: 400;">forces and motion unit bundle</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, you’ll have everything you need to teach this unit.</span></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-1375 aligncenter" src="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/how-to-teach-physical-science-pacing-guide-pin-200x300.png" alt="Physical science curriculum map in a binder with surrounding school supplies. text overlay reads &quot;how to teach physical science: the first year teacher's guide&quot;" width="350" height="525" srcset="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/how-to-teach-physical-science-pacing-guide-pin-200x300.png 200w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/how-to-teach-physical-science-pacing-guide-pin-600x900.png 600w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/how-to-teach-physical-science-pacing-guide-pin-683x1024.png 683w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/how-to-teach-physical-science-pacing-guide-pin-768x1152.png 768w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/how-to-teach-physical-science-pacing-guide-pin-400x600.png 400w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/how-to-teach-physical-science-pacing-guide-pin.png 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px" /></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If the thought of planning your physical science curriculum map, </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">and</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> all of the activities, lessons, and assessments for the units sounds terrifying, the </span><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Physical-Science-Year-Long-Bundle-5685327?utm_source=Physical%20Science%20Pacing&amp;utm_campaign=PS%20big%20bundle"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Physical Science Year-Long Bundle</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> is perfect for you. This bundle has activities for every unit in my pacing guide, including waves, energy, and more.
