But here’s the truth: you don’t need a science degree to teach middle schools science effectively.

What you do need is a simple structure, a few reliable tools, and a mindset that science should be explored, not perfected. With the right approach, homeschool science can easily become one of the most engaging (and surprisingly fun) parts of your day.

Let’s walk through exactly how to make that happen.

What does middle school science actually include?

Before you can confidently build your homeschool science plan, it helps to know what you’re working toward.

Middle school science typically focuses on three main branches:

Life Science (aka the living things unit)

Life Science is often the most relatable and favorite unit for students.

Topics may include:

Cells and cell theory
Genetics and heredity
Ecosystems
Evolution
Human body systems
Photosynthesis and cellular respiration
Biotechnology
Classification of living things

This is where students start connecting science to themselves and the world around them.

Earth and Space Science

The Earth and Space branch of science helps students understand the plant they live on and what’s beyond it.

Topics may include:

Plate tectonics
Weathering and erosion
The rock cycle
Earth’s layers
The solar system
Moon phases
Weather vs. climate

This is a great opportunity to connect science to real world observations like weather watching!

Physical Science (the “how things work” category)

Physical science is where students explore mechanics beyond everyday phenomena.

Topics may include:

Forces and motion
Energy
Waves
Electricity and magnetism
Matter
Light and the electromagnetic spectrum

Some of these topics can feel intimidating at first, but with the right structure, they become very manageable.

Do I have to teach all of this at once?

Absolutely not.

One of the biggest misconceptions about homeschool science is that you need to cover everything all the time. You don’t.

Most homeschool science curriculum plans follow on of two approaches:

Option 1: Rotate by year

6th grade: Earth Science
7th grade: Life Science
8th grade: Physical Science

Option 2: Spiral all three each year

You’ll introduce a mix of topics from each branch throughout the year.

Honestly? I’ve done both and I tend to prefer the mixed approach. It keeps things fresh and helps students make connections across topics.

Day 2: Practice the concept

Now students need to practice what they learned. This could look like:

This is really where the magic happens. If science feels boring, it’s usually because this step is missing. Science is meant to be explored!

Simple experiments
Observation activities
Hands-on stations

Day 4: Review and apply to make it stick

Every year around this time, I’d catch myself thinking, “Wait…didn’t we just start the school year?” And then somehow, April would pop up like a jump scare.

Between labs, assemblies, fire drills, rescheduled field trips, and whatever else middle school throws into the mix, finding time for test prep felt nearly impossible. I remember staring at my planner wondering how I was supposed to fit one more thing into a schedule that was already bursting at the seams.

But then I realized, you don’t need a huge overhaul to help your middle school students feel ready for standardized tests. By weaving in tiny review moments now, everything feels lighter later. A little bit of standardized test review sprinkled throughout your week can make a big difference, without overwhelming you or your students.

Let’s take a look at a few simple, low-prep ways to get ahead before testing season sneaks up on you this year.

Standardized test review made simple for middle school science

Start small with daily warm-ups and exit tickets

You don’t need a brand new unit or a giant packet to start reviewing. Just tuck it into routines you already have!

Try dropping in a spiral review warm-up a few times a week that revisits concepts students haven’t seen in awhile. If you’re in the middle of your cells unit, toss in a quick question about plate tectonics as a warm up. Those tiny retrieval moments help reinforce old content without stealing class time.

Exit tickets are another great way to review and collect quick data. If half your class misses a weathering or erosion question, that’s your sign to circle back with a mini review next week. Short, simple, and effective.

Set up 5-6 short stations around the room. A few examples:

Vocabulary match up station using terms, definitions, and diagrams
Mini lab review with a quick demo
Draw it station where students sketch a labeled diagram like the water cycle or a cell
Quick write explaining a concept or cycle

Because students rotate every few minutes, they stay engaged while hitting multiple standards without feeling like they’re stuck in a test prep loop.

How to Teach Students to Work Independently at Science Stations

I love using science stations in my middle school classroom. Stations keep my students moving, engaged, and learning in a variety of formats. Pretty much the dream, right?

But running stations in my class wasn’t always smooth sailing. When I first started, stations felt more like I was running a circus than a classroom.

Over time, I’ve learned how to set clear expectations, keep systems consistent, and build student independence. And let me tell you, it makes all the difference.

If you’ve ever tried stations and felt like giving up (or maybe you’re thinking about trying them for the first time this new school year!), these tips are for you. I’ll walk you through how I teach my students to work independently at stations so that things run smoothly and I can actually spend time supporting learning instead of leading the circus.

Start the School Year with Stations That Actually Work

Kick off your year in science class with engaging and purposeful stations that will build teamwork skills, set expectations, and help you get to know your students.

What Every Middle School Teacher Needs to Know Before Starting Science Stations

1. Set Clear Expectations

Remember, students can’t meet expectations they haven’t been clearly taught. Before you ever put out a station bin or set a timer, start by teaching your students station expectations. This step might feel like it’s slowing you down, but it’s actually the key to speeding things up later.

I always begin with whole class discussions and modeling what successful station work looks and sounds like. That includes:

How to move between stations without crowding or rushing
What voice levels are appropriate during partner or group work
How to use timers or signals to transition smoothly
What to do if you finish early
How to ask for help without interrupting another group or the teacher

We act it out. We practice. We even pause between rotations for the first few rounds just to reset and reflect together.

It might take a couple of days to build this routine, but it is 100% worth your time. Once these expectations are in place, you’ll be able to run science stations with minimal interruptions.

2. Keep Your Science Station Structure Simple and Consistent

One of the best ways to build student confidence and independence is to keep your science station structure predictable. I rotate through the same five types of stations in my classroom and the format stays consistent week to week.

When students know what to expect, they can jump right in without needing a ton of direction. They’re not wasting energy trying to figure out the format. Instead, they can focus their attention on thinking like scientists.

Start with just a few go-to station formats and repeat them often. Label them clearly, keep directions simple, and build in visual cues when possible. Over time, you’ll create a routine your students can follow with minimal reminders.

3. Teach Roles and Responsibilities at Each Science Station

One of the best things I ever did for classroom management during science stations was assigning clear roles to each group member. It’s a simple strategy, but it makes a huge difference in keeping students focused and accountable.

Every group has four roles:

Materials Manager – Grabs supplies and returns them
Reader – Reads directions out loud
Timer – Keeps the group on track
Recorder – Writes down any responses

I like to rotate roles regularly, so every student has a chance to try each one. It builds different skill sets and helps students appreciate the responsibilities of their teammates. Teaching these roles takes the pressure off individual students, allows everyone to participate, and helps the whole group stay focused and organized.

4. Use Visual Aids and Clear Instructions

No matter how many times you explain directions out loud, someone will inevitably forget them when you’re working with another group. To keep stations running smoothly (and cut down on repeat questions!), I always include:

Step by step written instructions
Visuals or photos of the task in action
A sample of the finished product (if necessary)

Having these tools in place helps the entire class stay on track without needing constant redirection. It gives students a go-to reference so they can stay focused, make progress, and work more independently. The goal is to create a classroom where students know how to help themselves and each other.

5. Plan Ahead for the “What If” Scenarios

This might be the biggest game changer in making science stations feel manageable. Before launching a new set of stations, I go over common “what if” scenarios:

What if I finish early?
What if I don’t understand the directions?
What if my group is off task?

We talk about it and I post reminders so students don’t feel stuck. Having a plan helps students feel comfortable and capable working independently.

6. Build Student Stamina Over Time

If you try to launch all your science stations, roles, and routines at once, you’re going to burn out…and so are your students.

Instead of going all in on day one, I start small. At the beginning of the year, we might only do 2-3 stations for 6-10 minutes each. This gives students time to practice transitions, roles, and expectations without the pressure of a full length station.

As students get more comfortable with expectations and routines, I increase the time and number of stations. It’s a gradual release that helps prevent overwhelm for everyone (especially me!).

7. Use Reflection to Support Independence and Accountability

After students rotate through science stations, I always build in a few minutes for reflection. It doesn’t have to take long, but giving students a chance to pause and think about how things went helps reinforce expectations and learning.

Here are a few simple tools I use to make that happen:

Quick exit tickets – a question or prompt to wrap up the activity
Station self-assessments – students rate how well they stayed on task
Group reflection questions – a short discussion or written response

I might ask things like: What went well during your station work today? What was challenging for your group? Did you have a lightbulb moment?

These quick check-ins encourage accountability and give me valuable insight into how students are experiencing the stations.

Running science stations doesn’t have to feel chaotic. With clear routines, simple systems, and lots of modeling, your students can work independently. And you can spend more time supporting learning, not managing behavior.

If you’re just getting started, try introducing one new routine at a time. Start small with fewer stations and shorter rotations. More importantly – celebrate the small wins along the way! You’ll be surprised how quickly students rise to the occasion when they know what’s expected of them.

Science stations really can be a game-changer in your classroom and you don’t have to figure it out alone! With a few systems in place, you’ll set the stage for meaningful, independent learning all year long.

Christmas Science Activities for Your Middle School Class

The weeks between Thanksgiving and Winter Break are always hectic—tests, grades, and plenty of holiday energy from students. However, that’s why I’ve curated some of the best Christmas science activities to make your classroom festive, fun, and aligned with your middle school science standards. These activities will keep the holiday spirit alive all while keeping your class engaged and learning.

1. Element Ornaments: Decorate Your Chemistree

I love getting this activity done early because it doubles as holiday decor for my classroom and my middle school students love them!

Each student gets an ornament representing an element from the periodic table. Next , they research their element, color and cut out their ornament, and we laminate them to make them last longer. I even have a Christmas tree in my classroom designated for this activity. We call it our “Chemistree,” get it?!

This activity makes your science classroom festive while reinforcing students’ understanding of the periodic table and element properties.

2. Organ Ornaments

Similarly, take the same ornament concept and apply it to human anatomy to review body systems! This is a fun and festive addition to your Christmas science activities, helping students review human body systems while adding holiday décor to your classroom. Each ornament represents a different organ, and students research its function and identify the body system it belongs to.

How it works:

1️⃣ Each student picks an organ and designs their ornament.
2️⃣ They color, cut, and (if you’re feeling fancy) laminate it.
3️⃣ Add a ribbon, and suddenly, your classroom tree is full of personalized ornaments!

The best part? Watching your students proudly place their ornaments on the tree. It’s one of those moments that reminds me why I love teaching (and makes me forget how loud middle schoolers can be). Alternatively, If you don’t want to use a tree, you can place these on a bulletin board.

1. Ice Insulation – Students will explore how quickly ice melts using various insulators.

Light waves (reflection and refraction)

Weather, Earth’s systems, and the water cycle
Food webs, producers, and consumers
Earth’s layers

4. Christmas Light Circuits

Try using mini holiday lights to build series and parallel circuits! Students can decorate a small paper tree by “lighting it up” with their circuits. This hands-on activity is festive and reinforces key electrical concepts.

5. Snowball Catapults

Using marshmallows as snowballs, challenge students to build catapults with craft sticks, rubber bands, and other materials. This activity is a great way to discuss potential and kinetic energy while getting students moving and creating.

6. Science Snow Globes

Have students design snow globes that illustrate scientific concepts like the water cycle or ecosystems. This craft allows for creativity while connecting back to science standards.

7. Crystal Ornaments with Borax

Teach crystallization with this engaging experiment, a perfect addition to your Christmas science activities! Students use pipe cleaners, borax, and mason jars to create beautiful crystal ornaments. It’s a multi-day process, but the results are always worth it.

Start by creating your borax solution and pouring it into the jar. Then, have students design the shape they want for their ornament using pipe cleaners. Once they’re finished, they’ll tie a string to the ornament, hang it over a popsicle stick, and let it dangle into the borax solution, ensuring it’s fully submerged. Let the ornaments sit overnight for the best crystallization results.

8. Holiday Slime Lab

If you’re braver than me, your students will love this lab!

Make red and green slime while discussing polymers and non-Newtonian fluids. You can even have students discuss the changes in matter and physical properties such viscosity, mass, volume, density, texture, shape, and elasticity.

Creative Science Stations Ideas and Activities for Middle School

We all know classroom time is limited and precious each day – so that’s why I love implementing stations into my middle school science classroom. Stations allow you to maximize every minute of your class period, which helps keep students engaged and learning in meaningful ways.

What I love most about stations is the structure they bring to my classroom. With consistent themes for every unit, my students know exactly what to expect each time stations are set up in our class. This helps make transitions smoother and routines easier to follow.

They also make differentiation a breeze because each station can focus on a unique activity. From mini labs to drawing challenges, every student gets what they need to feel successful.

Engage Your Students with These 5 Station Ideas for Middle School Science

1. The Create Station

The Create Station is all about visual representation. Students use their creativity to make diagrams, comic strips, trading cards, or infographics that represent the science concept we’re studying.

This station is especially helpful for visual learners. These creative projects become handy study tools that students can look back on later. It helps make the concepts stick and easier to understand.

Examples of the Create Station

For example, during a Taxonomy unit, students could create an imaginary or real life organism that represents one from one of the three domains of life.

2. The Discover Station

The Discover Station allows students to dive deeper into our current topic by conducting research. I like to set up a few laptops with guiding questions that extend classroom learning into real-world applications.

This station helps students connect classroom learning to everyday life, and how it can be applied to something they may already know about.

One way to set up a Discover Station during a unit on the Earth’s Layers could include students researching real-world application of Earth’s layers.

3. The Sort Station

The Sort Station is one of my favorites because it’s quick, collaborative, and super easy to set up. Students can work together to match or categorize things like vocabulary words.

I love using sorting activities in stations, but they’re also great as mini games or challenges. Try saying, “Which group can finish the sorting activity first?” to add some friendly competition!

These are also perfect to have on hand for those days when your lesson wraps up early. Sorting activities are engaging, versatile, and a fun way to keep the learning going!

4. The Writing Station

The Writing Station is all about getting students to think critically and put their ideas into words. I give them higher-order thinking questions that make them explain their reasoning and back it up with evidence from class.

It’s such a great way to see how well they’re understanding the material and how they connect concepts. Plus, it’s awesome practice for scientific communication!

5. The Experiment Station

The Experiment Station is usually my students’ favorite station! In this station, they actually get to complete a mini lab or observe a demonstration I’m completing for them.

These bite-sized experiments spark curiosity and give students a direct experience with the concepts they’re learning. After the activity, students answer reflective questions to deepen their understanding.

Why Themed Stations Work

Themed stations are a game-changer for classroom routines. They keep things consistent, make transitions easier, and set clear expectations for students.

I love using stations because they help me reach all of my students and tailor lessons to their needs. As students rotate through, they get a variety of experiences that reinforce concepts in fun and engaging ways.

Middle School Science Activities for the First Day of School

The first day in your middle school science class should be memorable for students. You want them to be excited to come back to your class, curious about what the year will be like and what they will learn. You also want to make sure they understand the structure of your class and what procedures are in place. You want to tackle it all. Let me tell you how to do it: stations. Yep, on day 1. Using stations, I can get through a ton of middle school science activities for the day of school that help prepare students for the year.

What are Stations?

Stations are a teaching strategy that involve students moving through different areas of the classroom to complete a specific activity or task. They allow students to engage in hands-on, interactive activities while rotating throughout the classroom within designated periods of time. Stations are an amazing way to differentiate instructions, allow students to collaborate with their peers and learn by doing, rather than having the teacher be in front of the room talking all period. How Do You Choose Stations on the First Day of School?

Think about your goals for those first days of school. For me, I want to accomplish a few things.

Get to know my students
Go over the syllabus
Review expectations
Allow students to learn the layout of the classroom
Have some fun with team building activities
Allow students to set goals for the year
Have an opportunity to walk around the room and have conversations with my students
Refresh their memory on different lab equipment that can be found in the classroom.

When choosing stations, I also make sure that each task can be accomplished within 8-10 minutes to keep things moving. I’ll give you a breakdown of how I structure my stations on the first days of school.

1. Team Building Activities

I add in 2 of these activities into my stations to add some fun into the first few days of school and a way for students to collaborate with peers. This helps reduce those first day jitters for them a bit without it being a full blown ice breaker activity that requires students to stand up in front of the room and talk. I know I personally hated that as a student and I still dislike it now when it happens during PD!

One of the stations is a paper airplane challenge in which students have to build a paper airplane that can travel a specific distance in a given time frame. The second is the index card and tape tower challenge. Students have to build the tallest tower they can with just index cards and tape in a given amount of time.

2. Syllabus Scavenger Hunt

Students will be given their syllabus at this station and they must answer questions based on the syllabus. I strongly believe in giving a syllabus to your students, even 6th graders. It really helps them understand the class and it helps parents/guardians understand what to expect as well. This requires them to look through it in order to get the answers correct. I ask the important things that I want them to remember like

“What is the cell phone policy?”

“What is the class room number?”

“How can I be contacted if you need me?”

“Are you allowed to have snacks in class?”

This gives them an idea about some of the rules and procedures I have in my class without standing in front of the class and talking about them. Finding it on their own by looking through the syllabus will help them retain the information better.

3. An "All About Me" Page

This is an obvious one, I want to get to know them! Also, many middle school students love talking about themselves and their interests. I feel that it is so important to know about the students in your classroom. The better you know them, the better you can teach them. I also go beyond the easy questions like favorite movie, musician, book, etc. I like to ask them essential questions like

“How do you learn best?”

“What type of activities do you feel are unhelpful when trying to learn a new concept?”

“Is there anything that you would like me to know that can help make this school year successful for you?”

I learn a lot from those questions. It helps me make a lot of decisions including seating charts, methods of instruction, grouping students, etc.

4. Make a Map of the Classroom

I set up one station with paper and some colored pencils so students can make their own map of the classroom. I let them walk around the room to identify key areas to include such as where the lab safety equipment is, where they can find a garbage can, where student supplies are, where they can find the pass, pencil sharpener location, etc. I promise this helps them remember! It doesn’t have to be pretty, it just has to do the job!

5. Name That Tool!

Throughout my years of teaching, I have learned that students always forget the correct terms for lab equipment. I give them this little quiz to see if they can identify tools like a beaker, Erlenmeyer flask, spring scale, tongs, goggles, etc. I even let them work together and they still get stuck on a few! We review it later on and it helps them remember the correct names for the tools during the year.

6. Goal Setting

I print this page on the back of the “All About Me” page so that I can keep them in a binder to reference throughout the year. I don’t just focus on academic goals either but personal, community, social and life goals. It’s important for students to think about their goals beyond just academics. This helps me learn a lot about my students too!

7. Classroom Expectations

I add a little twist to this and have students fill out a CER (claim, evidence, reasoning) template to fill out. I simply ask students to identify a procedure or expectation I may have in the class just by looking around. That becomes their claim, they write down evidence to support that and then finally, their reasoning with evidence to back up the claim. This makes the students

Think about classroom expectations and procedures and
Think like a scientist by backing up a claim with evidence and reasoning.

Depending on the amount of time you have in a class period, these stations activities can take 1-2 days. In a 50 minute class period, I can get them done in two days. Block scheduling (90 minutes) can allow this to be completed in one class period.

Once students move through the stations, I quickly review them and fill in any gaps.

Valentine’s Day Science Activities for Middle School

Valentine’s Day in elementary school was always so fun. Sharing Valentines, stuffing your face with chocolates, a big class party and everything had a red and pink theme to it the whole day. Then, middle school comes around and it all comes to a screeching halt. A bit of a bummer, right? It doesn’t have to be that way! You can still celebrate Valentine’s Day in your middle school science classroom. “But what about the standards?! My pacing guide?!” Don’t worry, I’ve got you. Here are some Valentine’s Day science activities for middle school that you can do to spread the love and keep that holiday excitement alive.

Food Labs

Middle schoolers love food. They love snacks, candy and anything that involves food in class is usually a win. If you can find a food lab for a topic you’re teaching, Valentine’s Day is the perfect day to do it. Bonus points if the food is pink or red.

Cells: Edible cell models with candy representing organelles.
Mitosis/Meiosis: Oreos and sprinkles to model the division process.
Plate Tectonics: Model plate boundaries with graham crackers, frosting and fruit roll ups.
Teaching
Moon Phases: Model the lunar cycle with Oreos. You can grab a free lab here.
Changes in States of Matter: Make ice cream in a bag.
Heat Transfer (conduction, convection, radiation): Make s’mores with the three different types of heat transfer.

Eco-Friendly Valentines

Have your students bring in recyclable materials and create eco-friendly Valentine’s for their friends or family. You can tie this into a lesson about human impact and how important it is to love the Earth and be kind to it. You could even have students make Valentine’s for the Earth and hand them around your classroom or hallway.

Cupid’s Catapults

Have students design catapults with supplies like popsicle sticks and bottle caps. You can discuss energy transformations that occur when using catapults. This STEM activity would allow for students to critically think about potential and kinetic energy in order to make sure their catapults are effective. You could even take them outside to test them out.

A day for the Heart

Dedicate the day to learning all about the heart and the circulatory system.

Have students make 3D heart models with play dough or modeling clay. Make it a STEM activity and have students try to create a working, pumping model of the heart using recycled materials.
Measure and compare heart rates during different types of activity.
Have students do a choice project about the circulatory system or the heart.

Valentine’s Day Slime

Yes, this one is messy but you can use this activity to teach concepts like density and states of matter.

Valentines Day Stations

Take the normal content you are teaching and find a way to make it Valentine’s Day themed with stations. Your students are probably going to be a little more excited than usual because of the holiday, so why not channel that energy into an activity that requires movement? These Valentine’s Day Science Stations Lab Activities include 8 different stations that spiral reviews middle school science content (life science, physical science and Earth/space science). Students spend 6-8 minutes at a station and then move on to the next at the sound of a timer. Each station includes a science topic with a Valentine’s Day theme. Check out the stations here.

5 Google Slides Ideas for Your Science Classroom

By now, you’ve probably heard of the magical powers of Google Slides! They are collaborative and simple presentation slides that put PowerPoint to shame. And the best part? You can use Google Slides for way more than classroom presentations. In fact, I want to share five Google Slide ideas that you will wish you thought of sooner.

Online Stations

Tired of all the prep that comes with preparing stations? Try out digital stations.

To set up my digital stations, I typically have one slide for each activity. The slide deck typically has between six and eight slides, and I aim to have each slide take about 10 minutes to complete.

For example, my Thermal Energy and Heat activities have six activities total. In one station, they look at a density image and answer critical thinking questions. In another station, they get a description of an object and must calculate the density.

Digital Interactive Notebooks

Say goodbye to the composition notebook and hello to the digital world! This Google Slide idea will eliminate the cutting, gluing, and wasting time that comes with notebooks.

They can add these slides to a growing Google Slide deck to create one big notebook. Or, they can have a notebook for each unit. Either way, I’ve found students can refer to their notes much easier when they are digital due to search features!

Independent Activities and Homework

Get rid of stacks of paper to grade (or the age old, “My dog ate my homework!”) with this Google Slide idea. All you have to do is assign the activity, and you are done!

By using Google Slides for your activities, you can better monitor students’ activity, quickly check to see what assignments have been completed, and simplify grading. It also makes providing feedback to students a breeze.

Collaborative Activities

Not all my Google Slide ideas are 1:1. Afterall, it is a presentation application! You can make Google Slide activities interactive by projecting them and working through it as a class.

This can be a part of your mini-lesson as you are gradually releasing students to work alone, or you can team students up and play a game where they answer questions on the slides.

I often use the same activities from my digital science stations for these collaborative activities.

Enrichment

One of my favorite Google Slides ideas is using it as enrichment or for students who complete assignments early. In the past, I would be scrambling to come up with something for students to do if they finished early, but now I have digital slides ready just for these students.

When I am putting together a unit for my students, I always have an extra Google Slide deck or two that I put in a folder called enrichment. If students have extra time, I direct them there. Sometimes the assignment is a digital science station and other times I’ll include a digital science lab for the unit. You can also review past content!
