<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Starting your first year teaching middle school science can feel equal parts exciting and overwhelming. You spend so much time thinking about lesson plans, classroom management, grading, parent communication, labs, supplies, and somehow trying to stay organized through all of it.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you’re a first year middle school science teacher, I want you to know something right away: you do not have to have everything figured out.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I still remember my first year in the classroom. I wanted every lesson to be perfect. I thought I needed to create every activity from scratch, keep students engaged every second of the day, and somehow magically balance all the responsibilities that come with teaching. Spoiler alert…that’s impossible.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Over time, I learned that the teachers who survive and thrive are not the ones doing the most. They’re the ones finding systems that work, building relationships with students, and giving themselves permission to grow.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If I could go back and talk to myself during that first year, these are the things I would say.</span></p> </div>

It simply means creating a classroom environment where students feel respected, welcomed, and comfortable learning. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Students work harder for teachers they feel connected to. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I am a huge fan of science units where I can visually show my students the content in action. It makes for some exciting lab and class periods! Teaching heat transfer is no exception. Typically when teaching about heat transfer, the biggest issue is vocabulary. Students struggle with the difference between conduction, convection, and radiation.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I want to share three tips for teaching heat transfer that will help students master the vocabulary and concepts, while also having some fun!</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2><b>Tip #1 Practice, Practice…And Practice Some More!</b></h2>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-871" src="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/5-300x200.png" alt="8 task cards that review heat transfer and thermal energy" width="443" height="295" srcset="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/5-300x200.png 300w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/5-600x400.png 600w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/5-1024x683.png 1024w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/5-768x512.png 768w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/5.png 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 443px) 100vw, 443px" /></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As a teacher, you don’t need any reminding that practice is the best thing we can do for our students! That’s why I love task cards.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When teaching heat transfer, I have students practice the skills with task cards because it makes practice simple and easy. Students use them in stations, as a warm-up, and even those few extra minutes at the end of class.&nbsp;</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The </span><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Thermal-Energy-and-Heat-Transfer-Editable-Task-Cards-Distance-Learning-5604588?utm_source=tips%20for%20teaching%20thermal%20energy%20blog&amp;utm_campaign=TE%20task%20cards"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Thermal Energy and Heat Transfer Task Cards</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> can be used on paper or digitally. Each task card has a different scenario on it, and students have to identify which heat transfer method is occurring.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">You can even turn this into a game! Read a scenario to the class and label each corner (conduction, convection, and radiation). Have students move to the corner that represents their answer! Then, have students explain why they choose that corner.</span></p>

<h2><b>Tip #2 Explicitly Teach Heat Transfer</b></h2>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Explicit teaching makes concepts clear and concise for students. It’s also an opportunity to take notes, ask questions, and practice with students. During my explicit instruction, I have students use </span><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Heat-Transfer-Quick-Lesson-and-Guided-Notes-7213659?utm_source=tips%20for%20teaching%20thermal%20energy%20blog&amp;utm_campaign=TE%20quick"><span style="font-weight: 400;">guided notes</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> as I teach a mini-lesson.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Here is how I teach each concept to students &#8211;&nbsp;</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><b>Conduction </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">&#8211; Heat is transferred through direct contact. Ex. a pot on a stove or sitting in a chair for a long time.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><b>Convection</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> &#8211; heat is transferred through a liquid or a gas. We talk about density a bit with convection. Warm air and liquid rise because it is less dense, while cool air and liquid sink. Ex. Boiling water and hot air balloons.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><b>Radiation </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">&#8211; Transfer of heat through electromagnetic waves. This is easier to explain once you’ve taught the Electromagnetic Spectrum. Ex. electric heaters and sunburns.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you want in-depth resources to help you teach heat transfer, this </span><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Thermal-Energy-and-Heat-PowerPoint-Guided-Notes-and-Assessment-Distance-Learning-5611638?utm_source=tips%20for%20teaching%20thermal%20energy%20blog&amp;utm_campaign=TE%20ppt%20gn%20assess"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Thermal Energy and Heat </span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">resource includes a PowerPoint, guided notes, and an assessment. Everything is made for you, so you can stick to teaching!</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I also created a </span><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Heat-Transfer-Quick-Lesson-and-Guided-Notes-7213659?utm_source=tips%20for%20teaching%20thermal%20energy%20blog&amp;utm_campaign=TE%20quick"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Mini-lesson Heat Transfer</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> resource which includes a quick PowerPoint and guided notes. This is great for reviewing!</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2><b>Tip #3 Teach Heat Transfer with a Lab</b></h2>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" wp-image-867 aligncenter" src="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/4-300x200.png" alt="Smores under a heat lamp for radiation, smores on a hot plate for conduction and smores through convection using a tea kettle" width="413" height="275" srcset="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/4-300x200.png 300w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/4-600x400.png 600w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/4-1024x683.png 1024w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/4-768x512.png 768w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/4.png 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 413px) 100vw, 413px" /></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As I mentioned, I love a lab to help students visually see the concepts in action, and this science lab couldn’t be any more fun (and delicious). To teach heat transfer, students will conduct a </span><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Heat-Transfer-with-Smores-Editable-Stations-Lab-5612862?utm_source=ways%20to%20teach%20thermal%20energy%20blog&amp;utm_campaign=smores%20lab"><span style="font-weight: 400;">S’mores Lab</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">!</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In this lab, students will melt marshmallows using a hot plate (conduction), a steam kettle (convection), and a heat lamp (radiation). They will observe and analyze along the way, while also seeing each type of heat transfer in action. Plus, they get to eat S’mores!&nbsp;</span></p>

<p>By now, you’ve probably heard of the magical powers of Google Slides! They are collaborative and simple presentation slides that put PowerPoint to shame. And the best part? You can use Google Slides for way more than classroom presentations. In fact, I want to share five Google Slide ideas that you will wish you thought of sooner.</p>
<h2><strong>Online Stations</strong></h2>
<p>Tired of all the prep that comes with preparing stations? Try out digital stations.</p>
<p>To set up my digital stations, I typically have one slide for each activity. The slide deck typically has between six and eight slides, and I aim to have each slide take about 10 minutes to complete.</p>
<p>For example, my <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Thermal-Energy-and-Heat-Transfer-Digital-Google-Slides-Activities-5765161?utm_source=Google%20Slides%20Blog%20Post&amp;utm_campaign=Thermal%20Energy%20GS">Thermal Energy and Heat</a> activities have six activities total. In one station, they look at a density image and answer critical thinking questions. In another station, they get a description of an object and must calculate the density.</p>
<p>You can check out all of my digital science stations <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Integrated-Science-Digital-Google-Slides-and-Print-Activities-Growing-Bundle-8330132?utm_source=Google%20Slides%20Blog%20Post&amp;utm_campaign=Integrated%20GS%20bundle">here</a>!</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-787" src="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Slide1-300x225.png" alt="" width="463" height="347" srcset="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Slide1-300x225.png 300w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Slide1-600x450.png 600w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Slide1-768x576.png 768w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Slide1.png 960w" sizes="(max-width: 463px) 100vw, 463px" /></p>
<h2><b>Digital Interactive Notebooks</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Say goodbye to the composition notebook and hello to the digital world! This Google Slide idea will eliminate the cutting, gluing, and wasting time that comes with notebooks.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">They can add these slides to a growing Google Slide deck to create one big notebook. Or, they can have a notebook for each unit. Either way, I’ve found students can refer to their notes much easier when they are digital due to search features!</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Want ready-to-go digital guided science notes? I have notes ready for properties of the Sun, Thermal Energy, Plate Tectonics, Marine Science Lessons and </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">way </span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">more. &nbsp;</span><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Secondary-Sparks/Search:quick+lesson"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Check them all out here.</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">&nbsp;</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re looking for tips on how to set up an interactive science notebook, find all my best tips <a href="https://secondarysparks.com/6-steps-to-setting-up-student-interactive-notebooks-in-science/">here!</a></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-788" src="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Slide2-300x225.png" alt="" width="451" height="338" srcset="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Slide2-300x225.png 300w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Slide2-600x450.png 600w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Slide2-768x576.png 768w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Slide2.png 960w" sizes="(max-width: 451px) 100vw, 451px" /></p>
<h2><b>Independent Activities and Homework</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Get rid of stacks of paper to grade (or the age old, “My dog ate my homework!”) with this Google Slide idea. All you have to do is assign the activity, and you are done!</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">By using Google Slides for your activities, you can better monitor students&#8217; activity, quickly check to see what assignments have been completed, and simplify grading. It also makes providing feedback to students a breeze.</span></p>
<h2><b>Collaborative Activities</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-1327 alignleft" src="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/how-to-use-google-slides-in-ms-science-200x300.png" alt="ipad with scientific variables activities in digital and paper version" width="200" height="300" srcset="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/how-to-use-google-slides-in-ms-science-200x300.png 200w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/how-to-use-google-slides-in-ms-science-600x900.png 600w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/how-to-use-google-slides-in-ms-science-683x1024.png 683w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/how-to-use-google-slides-in-ms-science-768x1152.png 768w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/how-to-use-google-slides-in-ms-science-400x600.png 400w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/how-to-use-google-slides-in-ms-science.png 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px" />Not all my Google Slide ideas are 1:1. Afterall, it is a presentation application! You can make Google Slide activities interactive by projecting them and working through it as a class.&nbsp;</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This can be a part of your mini-lesson as you are gradually releasing students to work alone, or you can team students up and play a game where they answer questions on the slides.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I often use the same activities from my </span><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Secondary-Sparks/Category/-Digital-Activities-449544/Search:stations"><span style="font-weight: 400;">digital science stations</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> for these collaborative activities.</span></p>
<p><b>Enrichment</b></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">One of my favorite Google Slides ideas is using it as enrichment or for students who complete assignments early. In the past, I would be scrambling to come up with something for students to do if they finished early, but now I have digital slides ready just for these students.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When I am putting together a unit for my students, I always have an extra Google Slide deck or two that I put in a folder called enrichment. If students have extra time, I direct them there. Sometimes the assignment is a </span><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Secondary-Sparks/Category/-Digital-Activities-449544/Search:stations"><span style="font-weight: 400;">digital science station</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> and other times I’ll include a </span><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Secondary-Sparks/Category/-Labs-445506?ref=unfilter/search"><span style="font-weight: 400;">digital science lab</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> for the unit. You can also review past content!&nbsp;</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-789" src="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Slide3-300x225.png" alt="ipad with worksheets, lab supplies and school supplies on a white background" width="461" height="346" srcset="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Slide3-300x225.png 300w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Slide3-600x450.png 600w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Slide3-768x576.png 768w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Slide3.png 960w" sizes="(max-width: 461px) 100vw, 461px" /></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2><b>Love these Google Slides ideas, but don’t want to create your own activities?</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I have everything from </span><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Secondary-Sparks/Category/-Labs-445506?ref=unfilter/search"><span style="font-weight: 400;">digital labs</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, </span><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Secondary-Sparks/Search:guided+notes"><span style="font-weight: 400;">guided notes</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, and </span><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Secondary-Sparks/Category/-Digital-Activities-449544/Search:stations"><span style="font-weight: 400;">digital stations </span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">already made for you! I’ve created resources for various units, from Earth Science to Matter to the Scientific Method. Plus, all of the digital resources also come with a print version (for when technology just isn’t your friend!).</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It’s the dreaded question, “What did I miss while I was out?” For years, I was guilty of simply excusing assignments because I couldn’t keep up with the missing and absent work. But, I realized there were valuable assignments students were missing out on (or that they really needed to complete, like exams). After a while, I found a system to organize student absent work that wasn’t overwhelming or chaotic.</span></p><p> </p><ol><li><h2><b> Create a Dedicated Space</b></h2></li></ol><p> </p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">You know what they say, “Out of sight, out of mind.” If you don’t have a dedicated area, in plain sight, in your classroom for missing and absent work, it’s going to be a struggle to keep up with.</span></p><p> </p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Personally, I organize student absent work with a hanging file folder with pockets. I put the hanging folder on a dedicated wall in my classroom. I use</span><a href="https://amzn.to/3D7VHwq"><span style="font-weight: 400;"> these hanging folders from Amazon</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. Then, I labeled the folders according to class name.</span></p><p> </p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">You can also use the filing crates, a mailbox, or paper tray. Consider the system that will be easy for students </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">and </span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">you. If the system doesn’t work for you, then you are less likely to keep up with it.</span></p><p> </p><p style="text-align: center;"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-794" src="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Slide2-1-226x300.png" alt="hanging file pockets on a wall with file folders containing papers. Ideally you want to teach this at the beginning of the year, but a mid-year change won’t hurt anyone. No matter what, stay consistent with the expectation you have set. If students know they can get away without using the system or turning in work, they will!</span></p><p> </p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When setting expectations, make sure you explain where to find missing work, where to turn that missing work in, and the amount of times students have to complete the work. You might want to put this on a poster or paper and display near the absent work pick-up location.</span></p><p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-1330 aligncenter" src="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/missing-work-in-middle-school-science-pin-200x300.png" alt="colored folders on wall containing assignments students can grab if they are missing it" width="200" height="300" srcset="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/missing-work-in-middle-school-science-pin-200x300.png 200w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/missing-work-in-middle-school-science-pin-600x900.png 600w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/missing-work-in-middle-school-science-pin-683x1024.png 683w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/missing-work-in-middle-school-science-pin-768x1152.png 768w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/missing-work-in-middle-school-science-pin-400x600.png 400w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/missing-work-in-middle-school-science-pin.png 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px" /></p><ol start="3"><li><h2><b> Get Ahead…of Yourself</b></h2></li></ol><p> </p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Teachers have an endless to-do list every day. Make organizing student absent work easy by preparing in advance. For example, you might print a few extra pages of an assignment to store in the missing work folder.</span></p><p> </p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Then, when taking attendance or as students are working, jot down absent student names on the top of your extra worksheets. Then, slip those into the missing work folder. I have found putting a name on the page makes it much easier on students because there are less questions about what they need to complete.</span></p><p> </p><p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" wp-image-793 aligncenter" src="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Slide1-1-226x300.png" alt="Hanging file pocket holders that contain papers. You can organize your folders by unit or topic, like “light waves” or “plate tectonics”. You can also organize it by month, week, or day.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Each six weeks or quarter, go back through your files and do a clean out. You can even assign a student helper for this task!</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This system to organize student absent work has saved me so much time, energy, and has saved my sanity! It also keeps my students accountable for their own work, which is a huge win.</span></p><p>Need another way to keep students organized? Try using agenda slides!</p> </div>

I start them in the beginning of the year and we use them throughout the school year. Every. Single. Day.  My students know when they walk into the room, they need to grab their folder and their notebook. Not only do we use our notebooks for organization but we also use them for tracking growth throughout the year with learning progression scales!</span></p><p><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>What is a learning progression scale?</strong></span></p><p>A learning progression scale sets targets for proficiency levels within a unit. They range from 1-4 with a 1 being the lowest level and 4 being the highest. They lay out the skills and goals for students to master learning targets.</p><p><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>Reasons for adding these accessories to your interactive notebook:</strong></span></p><ul><li><span style="font-weight: 400;">Makes standards, objectives and goals easy to reference at any time.</span></li><li><span style="font-weight: 400;">Actively requires students to think about what they already know and do not know.</span></li><li><span style="font-weight: 400;">Promotes reflection and accountability.</span></li></ul><p> </p><p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"><b>Having Learning Goals Accessible for Students</b></span></p><p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-683 aligncenter" src="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Slide1-300x300.png" alt="" width="470" height="470" srcset="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Slide1-300x300.png 300w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Slide1-100x100.png 100w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Slide1-600x600.png 600w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Slide1-150x150.png 150w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Slide1-400x400.png 400w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Slide1.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 470px) 100vw, 470px" /></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">We all know that we are supposed to have our learning goals written on our board or presented on a wall somewhere in our classroom for our students to see but what about when students aren’t in our classroom? What if they are struggling on an assignment and aren’t quite sure what it is they need to know or demonstrate? By having students include a learning progression scale in their interactive notebooks, they can use this as a guide and track their learning. We refer to it often in the classroom throughout a unit.</span></p><p> </p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Right before we begin a new lesson, I have my students complete the learning progression scale with me or I give them a copy of one they can glue into their notebooks. I review the learning goals with them as a class and we go over the levels of progression. A student would rate themselves as a 1 if the material is brand new to them and a 4 if they consider themselves an expert. Think about the kid who can basically teach the class type of expert. Each level is described for them so they know how to appropriately label themselves. After selecting a rating, they explain why they rate themselves that way.</span></p><p> </p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">My aim is to get all students to a 3. That’s how I know they are proficient in the material.</span></p><p> </p><p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"><b>Reflections on Learning</b></span></p><p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-684 aligncenter" src="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Slide2-300x300.png" alt="" width="471" height="471" srcset="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Slide2-300x300.png 300w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Slide2-100x100.png 100w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Slide2-600x600.png 600w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Slide2-150x150.png 150w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Slide2-400x400.png 400w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Slide2.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 471px) 100vw, 471px" /></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">So you have taught the lessons, assigned the supplementary resources, completed the projects, given the assessment, etc. Now what? It doesn’t end there&#8230; Now it is time to reflect! We go back to that learning progression scale and rate ourselves again with the same 1-4 scale. Once again, students will explain why they rated themselves this way. </span></p><p> </p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">You can take it a step further and have students complete these reflections with you in a student-teacher conference setting while discussing assessment scores. The student can explain their strengths in the topic as well as weaknesses. This helps not only the student understand where they may need extra help but it is also valuable feedback for you as a teacher!</span></p><p> </p><p> </p><p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"><b>Tracking Assessment Data</b></span></p><p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-685 aligncenter" src="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Slide3-300x300.png" alt="" width="471" height="471" srcset="https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Slide3-300x300.png 300w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Slide3-100x100.png 100w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Slide3-600x600.png 600w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Slide3-150x150.png 150w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Slide3-400x400.png 400w, https://secondarysparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Slide3.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 471px) 100vw, 471px" /></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">An assessment tracker that students can have in their notebooks and update frequently is a quick and easy tool that helps our middle school students hold themselves more accountable for their learning. I usually dedicate the very last page of the notebook to this tracker. They can track pre and post assessment data on it to see their growth throughout the school year. Best part? It takes only a minute or so to fill out for students once they have gotten their grades back.</span></p><p> </p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I truly believe that by laying out exactly what students need to know and teaching them to reflect on their learning really makes it more meaningful to them. This is what makes the knowledge stick!</span></p><p> </p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Want to get started setting up interactive notebooks for success in your middle school classroom?
