“Oh, ChemisTREE”🎄

When I tell you I bought a whole other artificial tree from Target during Black Friday just for this activity, I’m not lying.

This activity is a hit with my 8th grade physical science students during our matter unit.

Students each get an element ornament, research it, color it and then hang it on the tree when they are done.

Many even ask me if they can make more than 1!

Needless to say, my science teacher heart (and my class Christmas tree) are full 💖 🎄

This activity is quick, low prep and a fun way to add some holiday to decor to your classroom while keeping it aligned to standards!

I’ve done my element ornaments for years but when I started teaching life science, I knew those 7th graders would be upset if they were left out of the classroom holiday decorating.

So….

I bought another artificial Christmas tree and created these human body organ ornaments for them to make!

ORGANments, if you will.

Or does that sound completely awful?? 😅

You know I love a good stations lab and there’s

You know I love a good stations lab and there’s no exception when teaching density because this is one of those topics where once they see it, it all makes so much more sense to them.

My 8th grade science class loved these stations and it really helped them understand the difference between mass, volume and density.

They even got the calculations right 🥹

In these stations we:
🧪 practice calculating density using d=m/v
🧪 made a rainbow density tower
🧪 tied in earth space concepts with the densities of earths layers
🧪 found out the density of a chocolate bar (and ate some too 🍫)
🧪 reviewed vocab

In ONE 50 minute class period. 👏

If you haven’t tried stations yet, these are the perfect ones to try for your classes.

Set a 6-10 minute timer for each station, have them rotate at the buzzer and circulate while they work. They are so much easier to do than they look!
